One of my career highlights with Disney Imagineering was when I got to design this attraction back in 1995. "The virtual Jungle cruise" was one of the few remaining attractions that survived until Disneyquest closed.
I built designed and built the track (Rapids) and at least half of the locations, opening dock scene with matterhorn in the distance, the jungle tunnel entrance, the mud run slide, the crystal caves, the swamp, the whirlpools, the canyon, the ice caves, and the volcanic ending. I even had my hand in creating the visual effects, from bubbling lava to the asteroid that ends the attraction!
I even had the pleasure of building the very first 3D rendition of the classic jungle cruise boats and Disneyland shut down the attraction for a morning so I could get a ton of references photos. They let me drive the boat in reverse lol
I spent an entire summer riding our little ride over and over trying to make every turn, bump and drop as thrilling as possible. We really got every last drop of force out of the airbag base that the other imagineers put together for us.
It was a project of a lifetime as we pushed the boundaries of this new ride frontier.
I still think simulation are the future of Disney attractions and I'm pretty sure Star Wars land will capitalize on this concept and take it further.
