The Florida panther needs wild territory in order to survive - an average of 200 square miles for a single male. This makes the panther an excellent ambassador for the importance of protecting large connected landscapes in the Florida Wildlife Corridor. The corridor will also ensure a future for FL’s wildlife, outdoor recreation, the Everglades & clean drinking water. Check out conservation photographer @carltonward’s new @kickstarter campaign which supports the Path of the Panther project & offers some pretty cool rewards at pathofthepanther.org. Head to @fl_wildcorridor to learn more about the corridor. We donate part of our proceeds to the @fl_wildcorridor to help #KeepFLWild. ☀️ #pathofthepanther #sunshinestate #floridawild #sunshinestategoods @insidenatgeo

A male Florida panther navigates a narrow trail as the sun sets over Babcock Ranch. Perhaps he’s getting an early start on a nighttime hunt for a deer or hog. A panther like this can have a home range up to 200 square miles, making him an excellent ambassador for the importance of protecting large connected landscapes within the Florida Wildlife Corridor. The state animal of Florida in the last puma surviving in the eastern United States, the Florida panther population has grown to approximately 200 individuals, up from a low of 20-30 when it was added to the endangered species list in 1973. But there needs to be more than 600 panthers to be recovered from endangered status — and the only that is going to happen is by protecting more land from development so that panthers can reclaim their history territory through Florida and beyond. The best thing to come out of Baselmania was this mural and photo exhibition for the Florida Panther by our dear friends @carltonward and @torilinder. The mural is by the incredible @imdianagarcia and the show was hosted by @chotimelive and @ximenacho. You can see the mural on 29th street near Palmar restaurant and the Rubell Collection.
There’s currently a kickstarter campaign to fund the efforts to establish the Florida Wildlife Corridor, a patchwork of land bridges that allows our endangered panthers and native wildlife to move from lower Everglades to the north of the state - which is vital to habitat access and mating/mixing up the gene pool to keep them from going extinct. This has been a cause close to my heart for many years (I curated and hosted an art show called “Leave No Trace” to raise funds for the same cause back in 2014). Join the movement: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pathofthepanther/path-of-the-panther (and yes, I’m about to give birth any day now as evident in this photo!) #keepflwild #pathofthepanther #floridapanther

During Low Tide you can see the geological history of South Florida in the fossilized reefs and the mangroves that find shelter in the crevices of them.

Did you know our headquarters is in a historic gem of South Miami? The home once belonged to the pharmacologist Arden "Doc" Thomas who moved to Miami in the 1920's, built this home, traveled the world, but always came back to his beloved South Miami and it's natural landscapes.

@Regrann from @natgeo - 📸 by @CarltonWard | Northwest #Florida is said to have the highest concentration of freshwater springs in the world. Unfortunately, in many of Florida’s springs, eelgrass and other native vegetation has been overgrown and displaced by toxic green algae, seen here blanketing the bottom of Manatee Springs and ensconcing a manatee searching for food, as biologist Joe Guthrie (@joeguthrie8) observes from above. The proliferation of algae in recent years is attributed to increased pollution in springsheds and over pumping of the aquifer that has reduced spring flows to further concentrate pollutants. This photograph was captured on day 20 of the 70-day, 1000-mile Florida Wildlife Corridor #Glades2Gulf Expedition, a National Geographic supported project that traced the best remaining wildlife corridor connecting the Everglades Headwaters near Orlando to the vast pine forests of the Florida panhandle and Alabama.
