Murphy, 2017

In the interest of full disclosure, I do not have a dog.

A dear friend of mine challenged me recently.
How can you be doing this #yearfthedogs project when you don’t even have a dog ?

My retort is simple, I’ve photographed many animals such as Bears, Elephants, Tigers, Lions, Sheep and Pigs. Incredibly some of them were even kept as pets, yet I don’t have any of those either.

Maybe too much time away on assignments for National Geographic, maybe I never got over the death of my childhood dog or I’ve lived in too many weird apartment buildings, whatever the reason,
I am dogless.
Yet dogs are no strangers at our home. Our front porch famously graced the cover of a coffee-table book about porch dogs, complete with a photograph of a dog on our porch that did not live here.

I can say without hesitation, that if I did have a dog, I would be lucky to have one as cool as Murphy. A family dog who’s good with his paws and has just enough scruff to be considered authentic. He’s a venerable first-generation Labradoodle closing in on 14. A loyal and friendly sort with a firm pawshake, he needs no help opening or closing the front door of his home.

He’s welcome on our porch anytime.

There is something about each of these dogs that I admire and I enjoy sharing them with you.
Thank you all for your kind comments, messages and emails. I read them all and try to respond to each as best I can if you follow @vincentjmusi

Photo by @FransLanting Happy World Penguin Day! If you ever feel a bit overfed consider this emperor penguin chick with its bulging belly filled to capacity after a huge meal of fish and squid regurgitated by one of its parents standing guard. Emperor penguin parents travel for days across the sea ice surrounding Antarctica to bring food from the open ocean back to their chicks. It’s a race against time, because the young penguins must grow up and fledge before the sea ice melts out from under their feet. Nobody knows what the ultimate effects of global warming will be for these remarkable birds, but while they do what they do best, it’s our responsibility to look ahead to safeguard a future for them. Follow me @FransLanting and @ChristineEckstrom to see more of these heroic birds. If you would like to own a signed print of another emperor penguin image I made, check the @natgeocreative link in my Instagram profile—the prints are only $100 and the sale ends April 28.

Blame the Red | Photograph by Melih Ersahin
“This photo was taken in the Salt Lake flats in Ankara, Turkey,” writes #YourShotPhotographer Melih Ersahin, “as part of an ongoing project named Fabric Stories.”

“The richness of the red in this frame is just breathtaking. I love the shape you created with the fabric and how the eye is pulled from one edge of the frame to another. Well done, Melih!” — @natgeoyourshot Associate Photo Editor Kristen McNicholas (@kemcnicholas)

With @natalyosmann. #followmeto mysterious Venice. This was the time people thought Nataly was walking naked on the streets :)). Actually she wasn’t - this is just me finding a good angle. First time in Venice and I can definitely say that this was one of the most romantic places we have been to.
P.s I know it is a mask, but always had a feeling that it is looking me right in the eyes, whenever I saw this picture :)
