”Recovering from a concussion feels like waking up from a 24/7 hangover" - I.H.⠀

Last Tuesday I had my last follow-up appointment with the neuropsych regarding my brain injury that happened last March. I didn't get much wiser, but at least the persistant headaches now have a name: "post-concussion syndrome". In order to not make it go towards a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), I need to change my whole routine, sleep schedule, limit my screen time, and I'll get tons of time extensions for school. ⠀
Today I see the team physician to talk about my DI field hockey (or potential track & field) career. For those of you who never had a concussion before; it feels like waking up with a hangover while skipping "the fun part" of the alcohol... Cheers! 🍻

🔙 Last week, I switched the walking days with those for biking to see how my head feels with some more action. Seemed perfectly fine:⠀

I dag blev jeg et helt år ældre! Min fødselsdag blev, som de sidste par år, fejret med en morgenløbetur. Dette år i Hanoi! 🏃🏼‍♀️Det blev til 6*søen rundt = 10 km! Havde jeg løbet 21,1km, så var jeg uden tvivl endt som en indtørret rosin. For at løbe i 30grader og luftfugtighed på +95% gjorde sveden løb som et vandfald af overalt fra første skridt! De første 4 runder blev løbet i første klasseselskab med @ansojellestad! 10 km i @5:03min/km💦

4 miles for me & half a mile for my 9 yr old. She had fun calling the cows 🐮 as we ran in the country at my in laws house this morning. Surprisingly, they seemed to answer her! Getting sleep when traveling with a 4 yr old is not easy, but when I saw the temp was 76 this morning I had to get out for a run! My paces are naturally dropping below 10 min pace again and that’s got me REALLY excited! Only a tiny amount of soreness (I wouldn’t even call it pain) behind my knee today. Progress has me really happy! Half marathon training will start soon and then another marathon training cycle for Houston 2019 then Boston 2019! Happy Monday!!!

I wanted to take a second to say thanks to my wonderful husband, Justin. I remember a year ago when I we got into bed and I looked at him and said, “I think I want to run a marathon”. He looked at me with this look of crazy/wonder/amazement. He didn’t understand why I would want to do one but at my first half marathon race when he saw my emotions he understood! He was along the course following me and was there when I crossed the finish line and got my first sub2 for the 13.1. I wouldn’t have wanted to share that moment with anyone else.
During my full he was there at mile 18 and at the finish line. He had tears of joy as much as I did when I finished. He was so proud of me and still is. I love that he is my number 1 fan. I can’t wait until November when he races his first 1/2 marathon with me! ❤️

Back at ‘er •


Took the weekend off to spend time with my family and it was an amazing weekend. Got home around noon and then did some marking for a few hours (I teach summer school) and then took a nap 😴. It was a lazy Sunday afternoon. But I knew I was going to do an early evening run so my day worked out perfectly and #GlenbowRanch kicked my ass which I knew it would #damnhills Too bad it wasn’t a very scenic route to run either 😉

Happy hump day 🐪 have you had a second to give yourself some grace this week?? If not, you should probably do that now. Or, if you already have... give yourself some more grace!! Yesterday in yoga, I dedicated that one hour to myself. Typically, when I do yoga... I think of one person I am grateful for and I dedicate that hour of practice to that person. But, rarely do I ever take time to be grateful for ME! Instead, I spend 90% of the time being too hard on myself and beating myself up for falling short in a workout, in being loving to Anthony, in being a good friend, a good daughter, a good sister, etc. So, yesterday, I took that hour of my practice to give myself and my body grace. To thank my body for all that it has allowed me to do and is still allowing me to do. Although I am not where I was in my level of fitness, I am learning to be thankful for what my body is allowing me to do right now. While, it isn’t much.. it’s something. We put our bodies through so much: work, stress, training (if you train), etc. yet, we never really take the time to thank our body! (At least I don’t.. if you do - I applaud you 😝) if we don’t show our bodies appreciation for what they have done, are doing, or will do, then how can we expect them to show us what they CAN do?! #humpday #iloverunning #radrabbit #runinrabbit #morningrun #monitorthebeat #womenrunners #revolve #hawaii

Its no secret that I am a big fan of setting goals. I have been pretty transparent with my goal right now, which is finishing a half ironman (1.2 mi swim, 56 mi bike, 13.1 mi run). Goals help keep you driven after that feeling of motivation fades away. Here are a couple tips for goal setting:
1️⃣Make it fun! Don't set a goal for mountain biking if you hate mountains and biking. If you love swimming, set a swimming goal. If you love Zumba, set a goal to go to Zumba 3x per week. Make it something you want to do!
2️⃣Make it achievable. Don't set a goal to run your first 100 miler if you have never run before. Set a goal to run your first mile, then your first 5k. If you want to go ahead and set that big goal, that's good, but set smaller achievable ones along the way!
3️⃣Don't make it too achievable. If you already walk 30 minutes a day, don't make your goal to walk for 35 minutes. That's too easy. Stretch yourself a little. If you walk 30 minutes a day, set a goal to run your first mile. It may start with running to the stop sign and walking back several times, but you are making progress towards that goal!
4️⃣Get accountability! Tell someone. Even if it's just one person. Let them ask you how your running is going. Tell them honestly how you are doing. It's so much better to go into a goal with a friend standing beside you!

El esfuerzo lo hacen las piernas, pero un braceo enérgico ayuda a que la impulsión sea más poderosa y económica, por eso los brazos ejercen una importante función en la técnica de carrera. ⚠️

Estos son algunos puntos a tener en cuenta en el braceo 🤓:
.
👉🏻No pegues los codos al cuerpo: esto hace que se pierda eficacia en el braceo. Los codos deben estar ligeramente separados del cuerpo.
.
👉🏻Intenta no elevar los brazos: ya que se necesita en exceso la musculatura de los hombros y la espalda para elevar los brazos, haciendo que te canses más rápido.
.
👉🏻Los brazos deben ir relajados: debes llevar un braceo natural y nada rígido, para que haga su función de equilibrio e impulsión y no interfiera en mayor gasto energético.
.
👉🏻No apretar los puños: no nos damos cuenta, pero muchas veces, sobre todo haciendo series o corriendo con intensidad, tendemos a apretar los puños. Estos deben ir como si estuvieras sujetando un tubo, deben de ir relajados.
.
👉🏻Codos en ángulo de 90 grados: a veces se flexiona en exceso el codo o se lleva demasiado abierto, algo que también afecta a la técnica y la economía de carrera.
.
El braceo no va a hacer que ganemos carreras, pero sí nos ayudará a que tengamos una técnica más eficiente, a que nos cansemos menos y a tener una zancada más potente, así que no podemos descuidar este aspecto. ⚡️🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️

TIP 👌🏻💪🏻: Un tren superior fuerte ayuda a un braceo más eficaz. Sí la parte superior del corredor es fuerte porque se trabaja la fuerza, el braceo puede ser más eficiente.

Monday’s are hard enough, why start it early to run for an hour?

After my long run Saturday, I thought to myself, people are gonna look at this and think “Jeph crushed it” without realizing how hard it was for me. Not that I blame them, it just made me realize that sometimes I don’t take enough time to truly admire how hard you all are working. It’s so easy to scroll, like or leave a quick comment without really feeling how. Much. Work. You just put in.

On top of that, we’re all just...people. We’re everyday people who have other jobs, families, demands on our time. We have other things we battle and work through. On top of chasing your goals, some of you are battling things at work, in relationships, loved ones who are sick, or personal struggles.

I think social is great because it’s connected so many of us. I have learned and grown so much more because of my insta fam. But I also know that IG makes it easy to think everything is easy for others when we’re all just trying to do our thing.

I love following your journey’s. I love seeing you constantly win your battles. Remember we’re working when we run, but also remember we’re all fighting more than that’s shown in this square world. Be nice to each other there 😊

That 'lil hammie was tight after 16.2 rainy miles laced w juicy hills yesterday. .

My running idol Michelle (top 10 triathlete and strong as heck runner) whipped me again running me up the highest point in the county yesterday. If you think NY is flat, it's not! First 10 mi we ran through 52* rain, ditched the rain ponchos in a dumpster and finished the remaining 6 in 70*humidity. The rain was IDEAL!!! .

Perfect long run 💃🏼💃🏼💃🏼not too easy and a solid steady pace just above marathon pace to make it challenging enough to add to that marathon fitness. Little by little! Gotta push it just enough each week! .

This week @shelbo800 won the 5000 in Belgium and earned the American record by cutting 26 SECONDS (!!!) off her personal best time. And that’s not all she’s done this year. At the U.S. Championships earlier this summer she won both the 1500 and 5000 (go google videos of her kick if you missed the races ⚡️⚡️⚡️) and was handed two baguettes at the finish line (#goals). In all seriousness though, I picked Shelby for this week’s painting because of something she said during an interview with @chris_j_chavez on the @citiusmag podcast, which is that, no matter if she achieves her goals, she’s doing what she loves. When I used to run, I thought the only way to win was to be serious but watching Shelby reminds me of the growth that can come from joy, as well. The older I get, the more I realize that my best days happen when I’m air drumming to my music mid-stride, and chasing something other than a time. Here’s to an amazing season from Shelby (which is still going!), eating more baguettes, unreal kicks down the final straightaway, and finding fulfillment in each run, whether goals are met or not. 🥖🥖🥖

W9D1: much needed REST day after this weekends 2nd 20 miler of the training cycle👌🏼 Garmin died at mile 19.17, so had to estimate the last .83🤷🏼‍♀️ Ran this on tired & sore legs, not to mention a 3:15am alarm on a Saturday to complete it. Goal was to still keep it over 8:20 per mile.. ended with an average of 8:21. Another LR closer to the #eriemarathon which is only 7 short weeks away. I ran for Kimberworth in the 5 man team category & we won!! 🎊🎉🎊 I managed 8x10k laps which is equivalent to 50miles in the 24 hours. The best feeling in the world to me is striding into a finishing line knowing your about to break the tape.. and when that moment comes after a set back it’s extra special. Getting hurt in March knowing I was in the best shape of my life and was on track to an OTQ time was devastating I wanted to hang up my @skechersperformance shoes and call it a day for good. But like a smoldering fire with the right wind it can be relit. About a month after been cleared to run I risked running a humid hill half.i started out running 6:30 pace and neg spilt one of the toughest half course in SC by almost 2mins but ran my slowest half in a long time and 1st over 80mins in awhile a couple of weeks later I took almost 5 mins of that time at altitude at half the fitness I had pre injury. I wanted to win so bad I wanted to run a sub 80 so bad I wanted to prove to myself that my set back was a mere test from god of my mental strength and I did that. did it hurt? Yes! Was it worth it? Absolutely! As I get ready to start fall training all I can think about is the feeling I had in this picture. That this very moment is worth all the blood sweat and tears.
