Today would have been Dalida's 86th birthday.
Born Yolanda Cristina Gigliotti on this day in 1933, Dalida grew up in the suburbs of Cairo, Egypt. After being crowned Miss Egypt in 1954, she landed her first movie role, using the stage name "Delila", in homage to Hedy Lamarr's character in the Hollywood classic Samson & Delila. She changed it slightly to "Dalida" after moving to Paris in late 1954 to pursue an acting career. She eventually turned to singing, in 1955 she recorded her début single "Madonna" on the Barclay label, this proved a relative success but it was Dalida's second single, "Bambino", which would really launch the singer to fame.
The French singer sold millions of records over the course of her three-decade career, gaining fans across the world with her sentimental ballads and lighter yé-yé tunes.
Sadly Dalida was unable to overcome her depression and on May 3rd 1987, she decided to put an end to her life, and wrote "Forgive me, life has become unbearable for me..." #Dalida #singer #legend #Music #france #paris #Egypt #Cairo #Italy #Morocco
