"My student Ja'Sean Williams is presumed dead after a police chase on Thursday morning where he is said to have jumped into the Mississippi River to avoid police. He was 14 years old, currently in the 8th grade, only a child. He was kind, he was sweet, he was silly, and he was so very loved.
Many who know Ja'Sean well including his mother do not believe that he would have jumped into the river of his own volition. There are so many elements of this story that do not seem right. One sheriff said, "He was yelling for help and appeared to be struggling in the water." How did they let him disappear in that water? How come no one saved him or at least tracked his location? Where is his body? How fiercely have they been looking? Are there dash cameras or body cameras to verify that he jumped in? Is the sheriff's office investigating this? Is an outside organization investigating this? How does a traffic violation/ assumed theft escalate to this?
The police have proven themselves to be untrustworthy and that they do not have the best interest of black boys at heart again and again. We need answers. We cannot accept this. Ja'Sean's family, his friends and classmates, and his teachers are heartbroken. Ja'Sean was a gift to this world and I am grateful that I got to know how it feels to melt in the glow of this smile. #JusticeforJaSean"
