Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind
#Regram #RG @natgeo: Photo by @amivitale With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. Yesterday, Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralov in the #czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF.
In 2009, I had the privilege of following this gentle hulking creature on his journey from the snowy Dour Krylov zoo in the Czech Republic to the warm plains of Kenya, when he was transported with three of his fellow Northern White Rhinos in a last ditch effort to save the subspecies. It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Follow @olpejeta and @amivitale to learn more about how we can protect these magnificent creatures.

Functionally extinct 🦏 Still can't believe the last male northern white rhino died last month. The last two females are guarded round the clock by armed guards. But once they are gone, they are gone for good.

Save white rhinos💖 happy #earthday 🌎

#RepostSave @natgeo with @repostsaveapp ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. Najin relaxes with a flock of oxpecker on her back. The oxpecker rest on the back of rhino, ridding them of pests like ticks, flies and other bugs and give off loud warning hisses when they see danger, providing a kind of alarm system, while also taking little sips of blood from the large mammal.

Najin is the daughter of Sudan, the last male white rhino who passed away on Mar. 19, and the mother of Fatu. Najin and Fatu are the last northern white rhino in all the world. Along with Sudan, they were transported from the Dvůr Králové Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) in the Czech Republic to Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in Kenya’s plains in a last ditch effort to encourage them to breed and save the species. The air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time there were eight northern white rhino in the world. Now there are two.
Yet all hope is not lost. Scientists believe they can bring the species back from the brink of extinction using IVF and stem cell science and are working toward that end. Whether science can save the species is unknown but my hope is that Sudan's legacy can be a HUGE wake up call for all of us. We can all make impacts in our own small ways for a world of co existence.

Annika @girlwiththefionatatoo has been telling me about the many beautiful animals that will be extinct in less than 20 years: Black Jaguars, Scarlett Macaws, and Rhinos 🦏to name just a few. I hope this new generation will find ways to save what we’ve killed off in just 3 generations. 🙏🏼😢🌏
.
.
Under the advice from Annika, our family made an official Earth 🌏 Day commitment. We switched to metal straws, bought Silicone reusable/washable plastics bags, and are figuring out how to compost!♻️ Every little change helps.❤️ .

Also, wanted to share about Sudan’s sad legacy as the last male Northern White Rhino on earth.

In celebration of Earth Day, I dedicate my post to Sudan, the last northern white male rhino that died last month in Kenya. There are currently only 2 females left of this species on earth(and both under protection - in wild, northern white rhinos are already reported extinct), yet another species that could not survive human kind. Praying that this will be a reminder to never allow this to happen again. 🙏🦏💔 Photo by @amivitale #nomorepoaching #respectanimals #wildaware #wildlife #protectanimals #extinction #endangeredspecies #earthday #loveearth #savetheanimals #stopanimalabuse #northernwhiterhinos

“Be a part of the solution, not a part of the pollution”. Today is the 48th Earth Day. Now, more than ever, we need to start rallying together to do better for this Earth; not only for our generations now, but for future generations as well. This year the last male Northern White Rhino became extinct. A species that survived for millions of years, but could not survive mankind. The plastic crisis is a truly global one, and the numbers are staggering. A 2015 study found that between 4.8 and 12.7 million metric tons of plastic makes it into the ocean from land each year. By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by weight. If that isn’t eye opening, I don’t know what is. And these are only TWO issues among thousands more.🌎🌲🦏 #EarthDay #plasticpollution #northernwhiterhinos #bethechange

The earth 🌏 has been crying along w us. Just as our skin speaks to us about distress in uproars and Inflammation, so does the earth. The crazy weather changes and flooding, dry lands crumbling and burning, and the massive extinction of so many rare and beautiful animals, are all voices screaming for us to be accountable. Let us all be committed and courageous in our mission to heal our earth. In this journey, I’m sure we will heal ourselves as well.

The plight of wildlife and the conflict between poachers and increasingly militarized rangers has received much-needed attention. But very little has been said about the indigenous communities on the front lines of the poaching wars, and the incredible work being done to strengthen them. We often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities. We are all very saddened to hear about the death of Sudan, the last remaining male of the Northern White Rhinos. We can only hope for one positive outcome from this tragic extinction - that it will bring humans together in a massive effort to save our planet’s noble animals. The world, our fellow creatures, and our children deserve better. We had the honor of filming with Sudan and @olpejeta Conservancy a few years back as part of a #GoProForaCause film titled, "The Last of the Rhinos". We've included a clip of the Sudan segment in honor of his passing.

Photo by @amivitale. Jan Stejskal from Dvur Kralove Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) comforts Sudan as he takes his last breath. Moments before he died, Sudan was surrounded by love, together with the people who committed their lives to protecting him and giving him the good life he enjoyed. There were the directors and people from the Dvůr Králové Zoo, staffers and his six dedicated keepers from Ol Pejeta, who spent more time with him than their own children. Veterinarians and other people from Kenya Wildlife Services were present as well. Most of them had been crying for days. The sky opened up. Rain poured down and he perked up for a moment. When he died, it was silent except for one little go-away-bird chirping ‘go away, go away, go away.’ Poaching is not slowing down. It’s entirely possible, even likely, that if the killing continues, these rhinos—along with elephants and a host of lesser known plains animals—will be functionally extinct in our lifetime. I only hope that this will be a wake-up call. We can often forget that the best protectors of these landscapes are the local communities themselves. Their efforts to preserve community cohesion is ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life.

I have launched a print sale of the last of the northern white rhinos with 100% of the proceeds going to @olpejeta so that they can continue on their mission of protecting and fighting for some of the world's most vulnerable creatures. #Throwback to my NYC trip 2 weeks ago when I came across a statue thinking it symbolized something funny.
When I got closer to the sign right next to it I learned the statue was actually created to inspire, educate and mobilize the community to raise their voices against rhino horn sales as well as to raise awareness to the possible extinction of the Northern White Rhinos.

The day the statue was erected there were only 3 Northern White Rhinos living in this world, but a couple of days later the male (Sudan) died, leaving behind his daughter Najin and granddaughter Fatu, the world’s last two Northern White Rhinos 😕

Photo by @amivitale. Fatu roams the 700 acre enclosure at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) where she has lived alongside her mother, Najin and her grandfather, Sudan, since she was translocated from the Dvur Kralove Zoo (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) in the Czech Republic. Since the passing of Sudan, Fatu and her mother Najin are the last remaining members of her species, the Northern White Rhino.
Their efforts are ultimately the best immunization against forces that threaten both their wildlife and way of life. My hope is that Sudan’s legacy serves as a catalyst to awaken humanity to this reality.

• in March, the very last Northern White Rhino passed away of natural causes, his name was Sudan and he was 45 years old and lived in northern Kenya. It was a truly sad day for the species and the people at @olpejeta who are working with his descendants (he is survived by two daughters) to keep the white rhino from full extinction • this sad but beautiful picture was taken by @amivitale who captures these moments to share and educate. This image can be purchased to directly help this vital work • Rest In Peace beautiful Sudan 🙏 please visit @amivitale to learn more •

Video by @amivitale Elephants enjoy a mud bath at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e). These elephants are being cared for by members of the local community. “We take care of the elephants, and the elephants are taking care of us. We now have a relationship between us.” In the wake of Sudan's death, I remain hopeful because of places like this where communities are coming together to protect what is left.
I have launched a print sale of the last of the northern white rhinos with 100% of the proceeds going to @olpejeta so that they can continue on their mission of protecting and fighting for some of the world's most vulnerable creatures. Regrann from @natgeo - Photo by @amivitale.

Meet Najin (Mother) and Fatu (daughter) the last two surviving Northern white rhino females along with Tawu southern white rhino. Both were brought from Czech Republic where they were kept in Zoo to Ol Pejeta, a native habitat for the animals enriched with favourable climate and rich grasslands especially for rhinos. I met them and they were very friendly, just enjoying their morning carrots. Ol Pejeta conservancy is doing an amazing work & has a natural habitat for many animals & birds, all living as a one big family. Photo by @amivitale With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. Yesterday, Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino moments before he passed away.
It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind.

Fatu is the granddaughter of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino on the planet who passed away on March 19th due to age related complications.

We must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals. “Humanity has brought the northern white rhino to the edge of extinction because it has slaughtered the animal for its horn,” said project scientist Jan Stejskal, a conservation researcher based at (@safari_park_dvur_Kralove) Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic. “We have a duty to try to save it, no matter how hard that is going to be.” Scientists believe they can bring the species back from the brink of extinction using IVF and stem cell science. The IVF plan involves creating embryos and implanting them in surrogate mothers from a closely related sub-species, the southern white rhino, which is not endangered.

English: Northern White Rhino is almost extinct, as last living male, named Sudan, was euthanised because of health complications at age of 45 years. Only two female rhinos of this subspecie are now left, Najin and Fatu. Scientists are currently working on fertilizing their eggs with Sudan's semen, but saving this subspecie isn't probably very likely. Not even 60 years ago, population of this subspecie was about 2000 animals. Only 2 are left now. Rhino poachers and buyers of rhino horns are responsible for current generation having to watch this subspecie die out, responsible for the pain caused to these animals and for their deaths. All because of money. Rhino horn never had any medical or other effects or use, but money was stronger than truth and yet again, greed of the mankind was stronger than compassion and love.

Fatu is one of only two northern white rhinos alive on the planet, following the death of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino who died due to age related complications on March 19th at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta ) in Kenya. Fatu and her mother Najin are the two last of the northern white rhinos remaining in the world and may hold the keys to saving the entire species.
.
Sudan’s death could mean the extinction of his species, though scientists are considering other options involving Fatu and Najin, including stem cell procedures and harvesting eggs. If there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Our fate is linked to the fate of animals.

✖️Last of its Kind ✖️ This piece was inspired by the loss of the world’s last Male Northern White Rhino - Sudan. It’s saddens me deeply to know that the main cause of near extinction was due to human poaching and loss of habitat. Hopefully mankind will learn from this and change its ways.
When I first began this artwork, I started with typical tones of grey and white, but decided that it did not do the animal itself justice. I wanted this animal to be celebrated and to be remembered as an amazing beast - Sudan was 45 years old in fact.
I have an immense love for all animals, which I love to show through my art. I hope you all enjoy this piece as much as I did while creating it 🦏💭
