Beautiful artwork from Jeff Harrison @pedaling_against_poaching
He's riding 40 miles on his bike today in Arizona all for the rhinos and their endangered friends. Amazing man who is doing so much for these beautiful creatures.

I just finished reading Lawrence Anthony’s book, The Last Rhino: My Battle to Save One of the World’s Greatest Creatures. I want to applaud this book for countless reasons: the writing, the adventure, the conservation message and his ability to master human/animal communication, just to name a few.
During my time in Africa I saw two rhinos. Two. The subspecies of rhinos that are on the brink of extinction will be the largest land mammal to go extinct since the woolly mammoth. This video is one I took of a park ranger who was checking on what looked like a dead zebra. Park rangers risk their lives, and numerous are lost, to protect animals from poachers.
The second photo is the only one I have of rhinos and might be the only one I ever get.

Day 13 of #inktober #inktober2018, The prompt was "Guarded", so here is "Sudan", the last male Northern White Rhino. He sadly passed away recently but before that, he had to be guarded 24 hours a day by armed soldiers to prevent poachers from hunting him. There are females left and they hope to re-populate using IVF. #rhino #northernwhiterhinos #againstpoaching

White Rhino (2018), Russ Ronat
There are around 20,000 Southern White Rhinos remaining in the wild, there were half a million rhinos at the start of the 20th century. The white rhino is the 2nd largest land mammal after the elephant. The last male Northern white rhino died recently in captivity. Poaching continues to be a great threat to the survival of the rhinos.
On exhibition at Anthony Horth Gallery this Thursday, October 11th, 6-9 pm.

@Regran_ed from @amivitale - Photo by @amivitale. Photo by @amivitale. Fatu is one of only two northern white rhinos alive on the planet, following the death of Sudan, the last male northern white rhino who died due to age related complications on March 19th at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in Kenya. Fatu and her mother Najin are the last of the species remaining in the world and may hold the keys to saving the entire species.
Sudan’s death could mean the extinction of his species, though scientists are considering other options involving Fatu and Najin, including stem cell procedures and harvesting eggs. If there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape. Spectacular experience getting to see the last two Northern White Rhinos 🦏 and even more amazing to actually get to touch them and share some love.
They are such big creatures but the Northern White Rhinos are amazingly gentle and dog like.. To say we have been giddy with excitement wouldn’t even come close to adequately describing these experiences... It’s been pure magic.

Photo by @amivitale. With a heavy heart, I share this news and hope that Sudan's legacy will awaken us to protect this magnificent and fragile planet. On March 19th, wildlife ranger Joseph Wachira, 26 comforted Sudan, the last living male Northern White Rhino left on this planet moments before he passed away. Sudan lived a long, healthy life at the conservancy after he was brought to Kenya from @safari_park_dvur_kralov in the #Czechrepublic in 2009. He died surrounded by people who loved him at @olpejeta after suffering from age-related complications that led to degenerative changes in muscles and bones combined with extensive skin wounds. Sudan has been an inspirational figure for many across the world. Thousands have trooped to Ol Pejeta to see him and he has helped raise awareness for rhino conservation. The two female northern white rhinos left on the planet are his direct descendants. Research into new Assisted Reproductive Techniques for large mammals is underway due to him. The impact that this special animal has had on conservation is simply incredible. And there is still hope in the future that the subspecies might be restored through IVF.
In 2009, I had the privilege of following this gentle hulking creature on his journey from the snowy Dvur Krulov zoo in the Czech Republic to the warm plains of Kenya, when he was transported with three of his fellow Northern White Rhinos in a last ditch effort to save the subspecies. It was believed that the air, water, and food, not to mention room to roam, might stimulate them to breed—and the offspring would then be used to repopulate Africa. At the time, there were 8 Northern white rhinos alive, all in zoos. Today, we are witnessing the extinction of a species that had survived for millions of years but could not survive mankind. Follow @olpejeta and @amivitale to learn more what we can all do to #coexist.

amivitale Photo by @amivitale. Guards watch over Sudan, the last known male Northern white rhino, at Ol Pejeta Conservancy (@olpejeta) in northern Kenya before he passed away. He and three rhinos, were airlifted from @safari_park_dvur_kralove in the Czech Republic in 2009, in the hopes that being in their native habitat and climate would encourage them to mate. Today, Najin and Fatu, are the last Northern white rhinos alive on the planet. People imagine wildlife roaming freely on the open plains of Africa but this is what it looks like today. Because of poaching and the value of their horns, they have to be guarded around the clock by heavily militarized men. The visual of this is so striking compared to the images we imagine from even just a few decades ago.
If there is meaning in Sudan’s passing, it’s that all hope is not lost. This can be our wake-up call. In a world of more than 7 billion people, we must see ourselves as part of the landscape.
