Long post alert! #sorrynotsorry
I love birthdays. I love my friends’ birthdays, I love my family’s birthdays, I love strangers’ birthdays, I love my birthday, I love YOUR birthday. I love celebrating pretty much anything at any time, but I especially love celebrating someone being added to this weird universe we’re all wandering through.
But with all of that birthday love, my favorite thing of all is my little tradition of spending my birthday with just...me. Don’t get me wrong, I love celebrating the day that my glorious self was added to the universe at all of the parties and lunches and happy hours, but just not today (PLEASE keep throwing me the parties. I LOVE the parties). Today’s for me. I try to take this time every year to have some important conversations with myself. I don’t always get the full day, but I’ll take as much quiet as I can get.
Last year, I was fortunate enough to sit on a beach in Thailand for hours and hours on my birthday. It was at a time when my soul was shifting in big and scary ways, and I was learning the art of sitting in silence, alone. This year, I rented this fantastic little artist’s loft in Chicago, and I started writing. REALLY writing. Because on that beach last year I promised myself that I would put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), and tell a story that a little spark in my belly was pushing me to tell. And then life happened, as it does, and I broke that promise.
But birthdays are days to start again, and so I’m starting again today. And tonight I’m going to @togetherliveevents to listen to @glennondoyle tell it like it is, as she does, so I can feed that little spark. And then tomorrow with @michelleobama and @oprah. Lord knows if those women can’t help turn a spark into a flame, no one can.
I’m grateful for each and every one of you, and each and every birthday you’ve celebrated. Thank you for your calls/texts/good vibes today. You are all perfect little bright spots in a world that’s much brighter than we give it credit for. Remember that it’s never the wrong time to take care of yourself, write the book, learn the instrument, go on the trip, climb the mountain, buy the ticket, take the ride. 💜
