a new year, a new school semester--my last school semester
and it didn't start out so great
My great-grandfather passed away just before school started
he was 63 days short of 103 years
He was an inspiring man, drove his car until he was 99, flirted with ALL the nurses and wondered why all the pretty ladies were already taken. He was so proud I was in college, as he dropped out of school after the eighth grade to help on the family farm.
I remember him telling us stories of him walking 6 miles to school and if he was lucky, he got to ride a horse in winter, of him breaking horses, of him farming, of the Great Depression, when cars came about, when electricity and indoor plumbing came about. I remember taking him for car rides and driving around the countryside to look at the cows, the horses, or if we were lucky, watch the combines harvest the fields and he would tell us about harvesting by hand and then the first tractors, and then the combines we have now.
I will forever miss him, he holds a special place in my heart. .
