Hello, everyone! Today I wanted to share another present I made for a friend recently, this time for @giantdork! On Friday she gave me an absolutely beautiful frog sculpture she had purchased, covered with bold rainbow colors in a mosaic pattern, so I decided I wanted to make her something in return! Her favorite animals are cats, so I decided to draw a cat on a rock with a frog on its head. Plus, it was homage to an adorable watercolor painting she made me for my birthday a few months ago. To decorate rocks, I use an assortment of Sharpies of all varieties and Posca pens. I usually try to keep my use of paint markers to a minimum, both to challenge myself and to let more of the rock’s natural texture show through. However, this time I decided to use paint Sharpies and Posca pens quite a bit, since so much of the cat’s fur was white. This ended up being a great decision, because it allowed me to fix the many mistakes I made trying to draw such a tiny little frog and allowed me to create really vivid whiskers and highlights for the cat.
Overall, this rock allowed me to really explore the possibilities of using paint markers and learn how much of an asset they can be. Through paint markers, I can fix any mistake I make, and create highlights that would otherwise be impossible. Additionally, because colors are solid, they can be really bold and powerful, which is something I absolutely love! I had a lot of fun with the cat’s fur and whiskers, and while the frog was challenging due to its size, I love the result. Most of all, I was really happy to make something for @giantdork, who has given me so much over the years!
