Meet the Pangolin!
The world's only scaled mammal. These prehistoric creatures are covered in scales made of keratin (the same material as our finger nails). They have a tounge longer than their bodies made for slurping up incest such as termites and ants. The Pangolin is an excellent climber and use their strong tails to their advantage for balanace and hanging onto tree limbs. Similar to a Skunk, when bothered they can secrete a pungently odorous fluid. This is also used to simply mark their territory. As another defence they curl up into a ball exposing their hard scales, making them pretty difficult prey. Pangolin don't have teeth and are in able to chew.
All of these things are interesting and fun to know, but there is something so much more important to understand about the Pangolin.
These creatures are thought to be the most highly illegal trafficked animals in the world. Not only for pets, but for their scales, meat and even just to put into jars for show. There is not a known number of remaining Pangolin in the wild, but rescue centers are doing their best to save them from becoming extinct.
We have so much more to learn about a creature that is disappearing right before our eyes. These sweet babies help keep our ecosystem balanced. We can't afford to lose them forever!
Please read up more on the Pangolin, everyone should be able to learn about such an amazing animal.
