True entrepreneurs do their best work under serious pressure. The organizers of Saint Francis @tulsa_tough approached us and asked if we could help make their event the first major US cycling event to go single-use plastic bottle free. The catch? It’s hot as hell and people want chilled water. The other catch? They were getting rid of fossil fuel-powered generators. @malcolmmccollam the big cheese behind Tulsa Tough, said, “Design one that doesn’t need electricity, Noah!” That’s when plumbing Jedi and renaissance man, Keith Holman, went full beast mode. Within a few weeks, we had a working prototype that was producing 34-42° chilled water for up to four hours on a single 10-pound bag of ice. No electricity. After putting a big smile on the Tulsa Tough team faces, we took the show on the road. First for 150 people. Then 500 people. Then 1,000 people. Then @libbybillings of @elotetulsa calls and says, “Let’s take Cinco de Mayo plastic free!” 3,000-happy luchador-chanting fans later, we finally starting believing we might just be ready for the Big One: 30,000 race-day visitors x 3 days. We were sort of right.
