July 17, 2001: 17 years ago today, Aaliyah drops her self-titled album, also known as ‘The Red Album’. Led by tracks ‘We Need a Resolution’, ‘Rock the Boat’, ‘More Than a Women’, ‘It’s Whatever’, and ‘Read Between the Lines’. This was her third and last studio album before her tragic untimely death 5 weeks later on August 25, 2001 due to a plane crash after leaving the Bahamas from filming the music video for her hit single ‘Rock the Boat’. It had sold 447,000 copies before her death, then it boosted selling an extra 305,500 copies the week of her death. By September 19, 2001 the Album was already certified platinum and then double platinum by February 25, 2002. Til this day the record has sold 2.6 million copies in the US making it 2X PLATINUM!!! However, her uncle Barry Hankerson who owns the rights of her music through Blackground Records, cut off the distribution and the making of copies a couple years later after she died. Aaliyah’s self-titled would have sold so much more by now.
