Adding a “Push” to our “Press” today in high school. #pushpress. In the press we focus on bracing through strong tree trunk core. It is primarily a core and shoulder exercise. Its crazy to think about how worried I was about bulking and how I would look. I've gained about 8 pounds the past 8 weeks and I think that's pretty stellar so far.

A nice little 285 push press for one. My over head pressing has never been where I have wanted it to be. Road to 300 and beyond. Time to program based on my 1rm. Do you program based on a percent of max effort?

Yay! Hang cleans and push press! I love me some Olympic lifts. You'll notice I didnt use clips today either. Two reasons...
1) I was lazy and didnt want to walk and grab them
2) I learned that my left arm was pressing slower than my right (notice the weights spacing out) and wouldn't have learned it if the weights were secured.

Now...onto my 10min EMOM and then some burpees and squats!

- Part 2: 4 Rounds + 5 Reps
- Part 3: finished 10 push presses

I liked this event more than the event 1 but unfortunately this had also thrusters. I was able to keep it going with surprisingly steady pace until the part 3. I should have finished 10s. Well, next time then.

Another good event even though I had to do the first left arm walking lunges again because my left arm failed me a step before the line. I kinda knew that my left arm and shoulder will be the weakest link with this event but luckily I was able to do the rest of this event without misses, so I’m fine with the time but kinda annoyed because I could have done better.

One thing that almost nobody talks about is body awareness training. To make new lifters understand the technique cues, you must teach them the mind-muscle connections first. Here's a good drill I learned when I trained with a Chinese weightlifting coach. He told me professional Chinese weightlifters must spend at least 3 months on it before they can touch the weights at the beginning of their weightlifting careers. Key points for this drill is:
1. Weight on balls of the feet while pushing the knees out to engage the hips.
2. Keep the back tight but relax the arms completely. You can tell your arms are not relaxed enough if you can't keep the pvc close to your body. That's another good thing about using a pvc.
3. Don't think about pulling the bar into the hips. Keep your attention on pushing against the floor with balls of the feet to elevate the bar.
4. Try to get all the way up to the toes and get the elbows as high as possible. The leg drive and upper body extension must be done simultaneously and aggressively.
Try to spend at least 30 minutes on this drill every week. You'll notice a huge difference when you practice with weights.

Note to self: ‘don’t do a workout if you have a hangover’. Perhaps a bit too premature to start doing a disgusting workout after a night out. Swapped double unders for Single Unders because I just can’t do them. After completing this I was on the floor taking deep breaths on the brink of nausea. Just waiting for the endorphins to kick in now. A lesson well learnt 😰😰😰
