How many times have I heard the following: " Working from home must be so easy" "Oh you can have a rest whenever you want" or "Oh, so you don't REALLY work..."
I guess that a lot of people think that because my studio is behind the house where I live in, my work is suddenly easier, I get more rest and oh, I get tht washing done much easier? Hell no!!!
My day starts with a busy morning family routine, and it flows into my work routine seemingly seamlessly, but there is so many BUTs in that. For example, I never get the actual time to "switch off" from my house/family duties/housework because it is always around me! On my way to the loo, lunch, if someone comes to the door...I can SEE the mess, I always get STOPPED to help out with this or that and I KNOW what needs to be done because I get reminded 100 times a day when I see it!
Also, I don't get the 5 min chat with the colleagues because mostly I work alone unless (hooray!!!) we have a photo shoot or an interview with someone - I get to wait for "Barney the pigeon" to land on my window and say hi.
I also get my own family to just pop into my work day and ask this and that, expecting me to (firstly CALMLY respond after they interrupted me!!!) be able to switch into the family mode instantly and tell the where the damn red saucepan with dots is.
Working from home has many challenges, and it is NOT easier than going to work outside of the home.
Working from home can be isolating too: lack of contact with people, pushing ourselves even harder and working longer hours mean that our social lives can suffer even more at times.
And finally, working from home can be mentally challenging: from people that openly tell us that "we don't do ACTUAL work", to the people that accuse us of doing "easy" stuff and being greedy with charging it, to the fine line between the family life and work that often doesn't even exist for the work from home people.
I just wanted to say: I hear you. I am with you. I get you. But never get discouraged. The work will always be there, but the moment you accept youself and the fact that people talk/do/ask things because they simply DON'T UNDERSTAND - it will get easier.
And keep smiling xx
