It wasn’t terrible, it might not have even been bad, but it’s not really my cup of tea. I think it falls under a genre of comedy that I normally find very funny, but it fails on a lot of levels. It was almost slapstick at times. Knowing you’re making an R-Rated film grants a ton of freedom and creativity to the writers and actors. Where comedies collapse in this situation—this movie included—is they take it over the top. Every bit is not only dramatic and unrealistic, but it’s stupid. The jokes the first time around are hilarious and then the repetition becomes boring and annoying. You begin to question whether the film even has a story or if it’s just a bunch of beefy caricatures who are more concerned about their insults than identifying with an audience. We got macho, heroic Johnson who will do anything to keep the civilians on his beach safe. Then there’s Efron, overly tan and looking a little gaunt, who’s probably the best choice for this movie because he’s a beautifully chiseled human being and is great at playing the silly idiot who redeems himself in the final act. The sidekicks include a couple beautiful girls and the goofy guy who decided to commit halfway to being both Miles Teller and Josh Gad. It’s a funny movie and it’s exactly what you’d expect.
Shining Star: I just love the Rock. He might be the one reason I wanted to watch this movie.
