Footage of male Galapagos stretching his and possibly releasing . The claspers are true offshoot appendages from the pelvic fins used by the male in . There are 2 theoretically as a "backup" set although in truth to follow the parallel streamlined nature of the shark. Early sharks did not all have claspers but a single placoid scale at the tip of each has been traced a majority of the distance thru fossil records. (Dermal denticles and teeth are some of the best fossils of sharks). Ps most of them are rightys;) @forrest.in.focus @sharkysophie @seajewl online book on the evolution of claspers https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=6gK5AAAAIAAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PA221&dq=claspers&ots=KRjPhs1ia3&sig=4bap1SN3xzwN-ZQ6W0ArziUGHks=onepage&q=claspers&f=false

A group of sharks is called a shiver or a school. Schooling behaviour varies between species and even between sexes, as some gather for protection, for dominance or to forage. On pelagic dives with @oneoceandiving, Galapagos sharks (Carcharhinus galapagensis) and Sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus) are often observed competing for dominance in the water column, manuevering to occupy the top spot within the school using agnostic behavioural techniques to communicate and push other individuals further down. Scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini) are less concerned with maintaining elevation in the water column, instead larger females of certain populations compete for a position towards the centre of the school by approaching with a hit and corkscrew behaviour to force smaller sharks to the edge (Kilmley, A 1985). In contrast, Tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) are known to be relatively solitary with individual variation in habitat use dependent on prey abundance (Heithaus, M. Et al 2002). You can learn more about the fascinating social behaviour of sharks on our research pelagic tours with @oneoceandiving @oneoceanresearch and see for yourself how they coexist peacefully and respectfully with schooling humans!

WHY ARE SHARKS IMPORTANT? PART VIII Why we care. No one knows for sure what will happen globally if shark populations are destroyed, but one should fear the results. Two hundred and fifty million years ago, this planet suffered the largest mass extinction on record, and scientists believe this was caused in part by catastrophic changes in the ocean. Sharks play a keystone role ensuring our seas remain in a healthy equilibrium and do not reach that point again. #protectwhatyoulove #sharkbytes #sharkbytesapp #sharkweek #shark #saveoursharks #sharks #sharkawareness #ilovesharks #sharky #scuba #surf #beach #fishing #savesharks #sharklover #sharkconservation #learnsupportprotect #learn #support #protect #finalliance #elasmobranch #ourblueplanet #savetheoceans photo by @steve_woods_photography thank you

Meet Precious, a juvenile tiger shark. I actually got to name this beautiful tiger shark just by supporting @sharktagging and their conservation work to help save these majestic creatures. You can also help and name your own shark. Link in the comment section.

Urgent appeal to Mossel Bay locals... Please be on the lookout for Nurdles. Nurdles are small plastic pellets about the size of a lentil. Nurdles attract and concentrate background pollutants like DDT and PCBs to highly toxic levels, and are eaten by our marine life who mistake them for food.
Recently, it is believed that a container load of these pellets washed into the sea during storms in KwaZulu-Natal. They're now being found along our coastline, including Dana Bay, Hartenbos and Santos, likely causing a lot of harm to our coastal marine species.
Please read the information in this picture and if you're at the beach, spend a little time picking up any Nurdles you see. Thank you 💙 #7seasrope

Last night was an incredible ground breaking achievement in my life. I have been fully submerged in a project here in Costa Rica on building shark finning awareness as well as researching for the university. Last night was the opening event to our final project and we were greatly honored to have Randall Arauz, the President Of PRETOMA and CREMA NGOs of Costa Rica speak at our event. With this being the week of Thanksgiving, I am thankful for the opportunity to meet such an inspiring selfless man who has dedicated his life to marine life conservation and that there are many more points of contact I will be having with this man down the road! #randallarauz #pretoma #crema #sharkconservation #sharkfinning #sharkresearch #sharksalive #meettheteam #metthegreatest #meetanyone #3peopleaway #fromanyone #pursuegold #pursuegreat #neverquit #nevergiveup #workhard #getresults #godisreal #incontrol

What species of shark is this? We don’t know because grocery stores label the meat with only “cazon” (Mexico) which means simply “shark" or "small shark." Many grocery stores around the world continue to sell shark and ray meat that is ambiguously labeled and does not denote species. We think that this is unacceptable because consumers could be purchasing meat from a threatened species. We think that consumers have a right to know what they are purchasing so that they can make sustainable choices. Please SIGN THE PETITION (⬆️Link on the bio!!) to ask stores for better labeling and to stop the sale of threatened species of sharks and rays. The petition is linked on our website (www.nakaweproject.org) and also available here: https://www.change.org/p/citizens-worldwide-ask-corporations-to-stop-selling-threatened-species-and-label-shark-meat-with-the-species-name?

Throw Back Tuesday (TBT) - that’s the saying, right? Ok, I know it isn’t, but that’s ok! Here is one of my favorite pictures from the first year of @oseasfdn. I got to take my family out to survey the waters of Southern Long Island and we were lucky enough to catch this huge smooth #dogfish! There is nothing better than spending time with family…and sharks :). #liveyourdreams @nysdec #NYBight #montauk #starisland #oseas #sharkresearch #sharkconservation #montauksharklab #sharksurvey

'A school of Clarion angelfish remove parasites, dead skin and mucous from a oceanic manta ray. This species of "Cleaner fish" is endemic to the archipelago marine protected area, 240 miles south of Baja California. A critical initiative to expand this marine reserve, to further benefit large marine species like manta rays that roam vast distances is currently underway. Shot on assignment for @NatGeo magazine for the September 2017 story Ocean Stewards focused on marine conservation successes. Please @mantatrust and @maresmexicanos to learn more about manta rays in Mexico's western seas, where conservation initiatives are bearing fruit.'

Study Shows How Picky Eating Habits of Tiny Sea Creatures Affect Ocean Cycling - Dime-sized ocean organisms thought to graze on any particles in their path are actually picky eaters, and their food-filtering process may be vital to how organic materials are distributed from surface waters to the ocean floor. Those conclusions come from three studies, which involved scuba diving in different locations and high-speed videography in the lab, by a UO doctoral student. The research, led by Keats Conley, who earned her doctorate in July, rewrites what is known about appendicularians, said UO marine biologist Kelly Sutherland. These abundant, tiny, gelatinous animals, with a trunk and a tail, resemble tadpoles. They are long known for turning their own mucus into houses that envelope them to filter microscopic prey. Until their mucous houses are deployed, their tiny bodies, less than one-half inch long, are difficult to see. “We used to think of these creatures as being passive grazers, but now we know they are actually quite selective in what they consume,” said Sutherland, who was Conley’s mentor. http://theterramarproject.org/thedailycatch/study-shows-picky-eating-habits-tiny-sea-creatures-affect-ocean-cycling/ #protectwhatyoulove #sharkbytes #sharkbytesapp #sharkweek #shark #saveoursharks #sharks #sharkawareness #ilovesharks #sharky #scuba #surf #beach #fishing #savesharks #sharklover #sharkconservation #learnsupportprotect #learn #support #protect #finalliance #elasmobranch #ourblueplanet #savetheoceans
