The confronting reality of an #Orangutan in #Indonesia trying in vain to fight off a #bulldozer, which had already decimated his home.
Indonesia is home to the world’s rarest #ape, the #TapanuliOrangutan as well as the #LeuserEcosystem, the last place on #Earth where orangutans, #tigers, #elephants and #rhinos still survive together. Unfortunately, road building is their biggest threat, opening opportunities for illegal #deforestation, #logging, #palmoil plantations & wildlife #poaching.
The only way to save Leuser and all those who call it home is to silence the roaring bulldozers.

I have gone on and on about my time here in the Batang Toru rainforest, but what I haven’t told you is how amazingly special this forest is. It contains many endangered species in addition to the new Tapanuli orangutan, which is the most critically endangered great ape in the world.
But also, it is the only place in Sumatra where one can find a critically endangered genus of a carnivorous plant; the Pitcher plant (Nepenthes ). There are 12 species of pitcher plants found so far in the Batang Toru forest. It is a carnivorous plant that contains a sugary liquid inside that draws insects and small vertebrates such as rats and lizards. Amazing, right? They are also known as “monkey cups” as monkeys have been observed drinking rainwater from them . Sun bears have also been observed drinking from them. I am learning that this is a very special place…

Thanks to every one of you who has gone on this journey with me. It means a lot that you care! But the true reason that I went to photograph these incredible animals is to do my part to keep them alive. Their future is in serious jeopardy. No sooner were they discovered as a precious and rare new Great Ape species (like us), but then the Indonesian government set up a contract with a Chinese construction company to build a new electrohydrodam RIGHT in the middle of the Batang Toru forest - THEIR HOME!!! This will fragment their territory through the building of roads, and human development. The Indonesian government is mining gold ALSO in the middle of the Tapanuli orangutan habitat and the govt. needs this electricity for the mining town and mining equipment. It’s all fo matter of economy!! The problem: there are only roughly 800 of these animals making them the most endangered of the world’s great apes. They need to be able to move freely for breeding purposes to spread their genetic matter. If they are fragmented by this hydrodam in the middle of their habitat, not only will their gene pool dwindle to nothing, but they will be hunted and poached like the orangutans up north. This entire species will die out SOON. The only hope is to put INTERNATIONAL pressure on the Indonesian government. They are very sensitive to this. I believe in 6º of separation. I need you to talk about this with anyone and everyone you can. Perhaps you know someone influential….

The research team was so dedicated. THIS is NOT an easy job. Being in the field is hard work especially in the tropics. They are consistently taking coordinates for the orangutans that we are following while documenting any behavior. They also document the trees they eat from and the fruit including how much time they stay in a specific species of tree.

Without serious action on our part, orangutans could be extinct within 10 years.
It may seem small, but an easy way to help is by checking labels on food, and avoiding anything with palm oil in it. Palm oil is harvested from the trees in which orangutans live, and so many are displaced or killed because of it.

Regrann from @socp.official

The Batang Toru Ecosystem is very rich with its biodiversity. Ninety-one mammal species have already been recorded, including very rare species such as the sumatran tiger, and the recently described new great ape species tapanuli orangutan, only found in the Batang Toru Ecosystem, Tapanuli, North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Besides the high diversity of animals and birds, the flora of the Batang Toru Ecosystem is also fantastic, with a mosaic of differing forest types.

More information, please kindly check : www.batangtoru.org

The Tapanuli orangutan survives in northern Sumatra and it is already the most endangered great ape in the world with only less than 800 individuals remaining.

But the discovery hasn’t stopped a Chinese state-run company, Sinohydro, from moving ahead with clearing forest for a large dam project smack in the middle of the orangutan population. According to several orangutan experts, Sinohyrdo’s dam represents an immediate and existential threat to the Tapanuli orangutan. .

"..In the journal Current Biology (LINK ON BIO), the experts say the 510-megawatt dam in Sumatra will flood or otherwise alter part of the habitat, making it almost impossible to take a crucial step towards ensuring the species survives — reconnecting fragmented forests the primates are spread across. The scientists also urged that the remaining habitat in the Batang Toru forest of northern Sumatra be given strict conservation protection and that forest corridors be created to link separated populations.."

A new species of great ape has been discovered formally declarered to be a species on its own; The Tapanuli orangutan.
Among the great apes a group that also includes humans, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos, the newly discovered species is also the most endangered one with less then 800 individuals living in northern western Sumatra. orangutans Since 2001, two distinct species of orangutans have been recognised: the Bornean (Pongo pygmaeus) and Sumatran (Pongo abelii) orangutans. Now, there is a third.
You would think that all alarm bells would start to ring to protect this newly discovered Ape seriously threatened with extinction, instead, plans for the construction of a Hydroolectic Power Plant is developed as a “priority project” by the federal Government.

If this continues the habitat of worlds most endangered ape will be destroyed. Please help spread the news and sign the petition against these criminal plans: a crime against nature.
----

The Tanpanuli Orangutan is the newest species of great ape, discovered only 6 months ago in Northern Sumatra. With a tiny population of 800, this new species is already threatened by deforestation in the region and the planned construction of a Chinese dam. Habitat loss is one of the biggest causes of wildlife decline across the world, and if we continue to expand unsustainably, we may soon be left with only concrete jungles.⠀

Tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) is a species of orangutan, native to South Tapanuli in the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It is one of three known species of orangutan. It was described as a distinct species in 2017. live in tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests located south of Lake Toba in Sumatra. With fewer than 800 individuals restricted to an area of about 1,000 km2 (390 sq mi), the Tapanuli orangutan is the rarest great ape. It is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) because of hunting, conflict with humans, the illegal wildlife trade and rampant habitat destruction for small-scale agriculture, mining and a proposed hydroelectric project in the area with the highest density of orangutans, which could impact up to 10% of its already dwindling habitat and degrade important wildlife corridors. Conservationists predict an 83% decline in three generations (75 years) if the necessary conservation measures and practices are not implemented. Inbreeding depression is likely due to the small population size and fragmented range. This is supported by the genomes of the two Tapanuli orangutan individuals, which show signs of inbreeding. #tapanuliorangutan #orangutan #greatape #ape #primate #animals #savetheanimalssavetheworld #wildlife #conservation #criticallyendangered #indonesia #sumatra

You may recall that a new species of orangutan was discovered in November. Researchers also found that the Tapanuli orangutan was already the world's most endangered great ape. Now a new dam puts this population of less than 800 at risk. Like all orangutans, habitat loss is driving their decline and this one project led by a Chinese state-run company could cut their population in half. 🌳

Most of the Batang Toru Ecosystem, as the home of Tapanuli Orangutan, is currently allocated as Protection Forest.
In order to decrease the rate of the illegal encroachments, @yelmedan together with local government agencies, had carried out a lengthy boundary socialization programme since 2009. Most local community members do not know where forest boundaries are, as they are not demarcated in the field. Yet at the moment, the hydro dam and the gold mining is the main and serious threats to the ecosystem.

On the southeastern edge of the Batang Toru Ecosystem, in South Tapanuli, lies a gold mine spanning 162,900 hectares. This particular area has special importance for conservation because it is habitat for species representing both north and south Sumatra, including 15 globally threatened animals, including critically endangered Sumatran tigers as well as 60 other near-threatened species.

Furthermore, the presence of the mine has become a trigger for uncontrolled land speculation and highest deforestation rates over the last decade have been occurring near the mine site. Currently the mine is seeking to expand activities further into critical Tapanuli Orangutan habitat in neighboring districts, including into areas that have protected status. These planned expansions are further threatening the existence of the Batang Toru Ecosystem, its unique wildlife, as well as the communities living around this forest.

The Leuser Ecosystem (Picture 1), is an area of forest located in the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. Covering more than 2.6 million hectares, it is one of the richest expanses of tropical rain forest in Southeast Asia and is the last place on earth where sumatran elephant, sumatran rhinoceros, sumatran tiger and sumatran orangutan are found within one area.

Mean while, Batang Toru Ecosystem (Picture 2), is another unic forest in Tapanuli, North Sumatra. This ecosystem is the habitat for the newly described critically endangered Tapanuli Orangutan (Pongo Tapanuliensis), the rarest great ape in the world. Many other unic species such as Tapirs, Sun Bears, Serow, and Golden cats also found in this Harangan (forest) Tapanuli.

The Orangutan (Genus: Pongo)
🌏 Indonesia-Malaysia
Status: Critically Endangered [CR]
•They are only found in South East Asia on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra
•There are 3 species of Orangutan - Bornean, Sumatran and Tapanuli. The Tapanuli was only identified in Nov 2017
•They entered Borneo from Sumatra when the islands were connected by land during the last goacial period as the seas around had frozen
•The mothers stay with their children for the first two years
•Their hands have a special double-lock mechanism which makes them excellent tree climbers
•Every night, the Orangutan will build an intricate nest to sleep on. They show proficiency in tool use and are one of the most intelligent primates
•Populations have decreased by more than 60% in the last 50 years and are expected to further halve by 2025. Less than 100,000 remain in the wild
•A step you can take today to help save the Orangutans is to stop consuming products with Palm Oil. Palm oil production is the main reason for habitat loss and thus death of several thousand Orangutans. Check the ingredients of what you buy at the supermarket, Palm Oil is very likely present.

Photo by @TimLaman. The newest Great Ape species, The Tapanuli Orangutan, was just described! This is an adult male I photographed in Batang Toru in 2014, when I was lucky enough to have a chance to visit this remote site in Sumatra. The orangutans living there, only about 800 or less, have now been shown to be genetically distinct from both the regular Sumatran Orangutans, and the Bornean Orangutans. They are now scientifically recognized as a distinct species, and of course, are only found in the country of Indonesia. See the link in my profile to the article on @NatGeo News to learn more. The 3rd of March every year plays host to the U.N’s World Wildlife Day, and it marks an important milestone in the lives of animals all around the world, including the Critically Endangered Orangutan.

Habitat loss is by far the greatest threat to orangutans. Huge tracts of forest have been cleared throughout their range and the land used for agriculture, particularly palm oil. Along with habitat loss, young orang-utans are sought after for the illegal pet trade. When infants are targeted, usually the mother is killed so this trade represents a real threat to wild orang-utan populations.

Orangutan arms are similar to human. But, orangutans can grasp things with both their hands as well as their feet.
Their fingers and toes are curved, allowing them to get a better grip on branches. Since their hip joints have the same flexibility as their shoulder and arm joints, orangutans have less restriction in the movements of their legs than humans have.

Regrann from @timlaman - Photo by @TimLaman. A Tapanuli Orangutan male threatens another orangutan in the mountains of Sumatra. When I made this image in 2014 on assignment for @NatGeo, I didn’t know this isolated population was going to be described as a new species of orangutan, Pongo tapanuliensis! It is amazing that in 2017, we are still making new discoveries about the great apes, our closest relatives. But really, there is so much more to learn. For example, our short film called “Person-of-the-Forest” which I co-directed with @MelissaLesh, reveals some of the new findings about culture in orangutans – knowledge that is passed on from mother to offspring, and friend to friend. And if you happen to be in New York City this week, you can catch the New York premier of the film at the DOCNYC film festival where it is a featured selection. See link in my bio to watch the trailer and get the details to the opening this evening Nov 15th, where you can meet Melissa, and team members @tbfrost and @rrsuro.

The misuse of air guns for hunting has become increasingly uncontrollable. At least 40 orangutans have been recorded as victims in Borneo and Sumatra. The recent discovery that seized international attention is about an orangutan killed with 130 shots in the Kutai National Park in East Kalimantan.

Ownership of guns, including air rifles, is actually regulated in National Police Chief Regulation No. 8/2012, which stipulates that anyone wanting to buy a gun must obtain a permit from the National Police. But due to weak controls, abuse continues to cause victims to continue falling, including rare and protected wildlife in conservation areas.

In Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), so far we have 15 orangutans shot with more than 400 bullets. Some of them were dead, some are still in the Quarantine Center, and there's also who still alive but unreleasable, like Leuser due to a permanent blind in both of his eyes after found with 62 shots.

Credit to @timlaman : Photo by @TimLaman. A male Tapanuli Orangutan performing a long call, a vocalization adult male orangutans use to both let females know where they are, and to proclaim their territory to other males. The Tapanuli Orangutan is a new, third species of orangutan just recognized by scientists, Pongo tapanuliensis, found only in one small area of N. Sumatra. Besides the genetic and other differences, the vocalizations of Tapanuli Orangutans have also been shown by researchers to be distinct from the other two orangutan species, the Sumatran and Bornean. The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme are working with the Indonesian govt. to help protect this species. Check them out @socp.official. Shot on assignment for @NatGeo. This week at Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), we're very happy to welcome Bärbel Köhler from The Abaxis Company to give a special training about Hematology on wildlife species. This is a very good opportunity and important information for our veterinarians especially in terms of understanding the blood test procedure and the result for Orangutan. Thank you!
