These are some of my favorites from my first time hitchhiking in 2014...I over-packed, as yer gonna fuckin do your first time but even though I brought my whole DSLR kit with me, I only took photos on my phone... Anyway, we hitched as a trio only once on the very first day... After that one ride we knew we had to split up to get the next one because we waited hours for the first and that dude was a crackhead. He would have picked us up if there were fuckin 6 of us. Quality over quantity so I was hitching alone for the rest of this trip, meetin up with the fellas as we hitched around Vancouver Island... it's another animal, hitchin alone but it's the best buzz I know.
We're kinda trippin one morning down at the docks trying to hitch a boat to get to this "Elephant Rock" place to camp for a night but all the skippers looked at us like we were... well you know. Said fuck it and figured we'd be better off making our own "Elephant Rock" out of driftwood on the cliffs facin west...and set a huge godforsaken blaze to it.
We have a mutual passion for hopping around on rocks and cliffs... growing up in Newfoundland it was second nature but I haven't met many folks outside this island who share this same boyish addiction to just hopping from one boulder to the next, like without thinking or any sort of strategy, just flowing. We almost forgot about our Elephant- I mean it's a pile of driftwood but it had tusks and a trunk so it counts. The fire got pretty big and there were some flare ups in some our minds of some ol' worry and doubt... like what the fuck would the coastguard say? But I slept in my tent that night and not a jail cell, and so long as I have the option, that's where I'll be.
