Drove the new facelifted Porsche Macan S today. It reminded me why Porsche is simply the best. They have a way of infusing their sports car DNA into all of the cars they make, even their crossovers. I drove a Macan Turbo a while back and was blown away by how it drove. This Macan S reiterated everything I loved the first time. The big thing is how responsive it handles and how connected you feel with the car and the road surface... very few other SUVs do that at all, let alone do it well. The Macan even feels special driving at normal speeds in traffic, a Porsche trait from the beginning. Then when you start to push into some corners the Macan rotated beautifully and maintains its composure well, despite its weight. It really does feel like a big comfortable rally car at speed. The new single turbo V6 provides very solid performance, nothing excessive by Porsche standards, but this is the S, not the Turbo. For most people, it’s got way more than enough power. It’s PDK gearbox also totally sets the Macan apart from its rivals. It has a crisp direct feel to it that the torque converter autos just can’t quite match. I could also go on for days about how comfortable it was, how nice its interior was, etc, but I want to focus on where it stands head and shoulders above its competition. I’ve driven a few Audi SQ5s recently, and while that is a great fun crossover, the Macan S has it beat in a few key areas. The handling and sense of connection to the road are the main advantages, though. If you’re just looking for a fast capable SUV to drive fairly normally, then saving some money and getting the SQ5 is probably a good idea. But if you’re like me, and you live to push speed in corners and you relish the feeling of connection with the road, the Macan is surely worth the extra loot. My only criticism... it needs a lot more sound from its exhaust. The acceleration, while potent, wasn’t enough of an emotional event for a Porsche. This is one hell of a daily driver.
