Have you ever watched the same movie twice? Did you ever notice things the second time around that you didn’t the first time. What if you have watched your favorite movie 5 times? You know the lines, the scenes, and can even predict what’s next. What does this have to do with dog training?
Repetition! If I have a video sent to me I won’t watch it just once, I’ll watch it several times. I want to see what I can pick up the 5th time, 6th time, or 7th time.
That is why I consider myself as an observer before a trainer. Having observed a group of dogs on a daily basis for the past 11 years has helped me learn patterns (lines), communication (scenes), and then after watching it over and over again I am able to predict certain behaviors.
How does this apply to you as a dog owner? Your phone! Use your phone to record your dog during certain behaviors. Watch it over and over again to learn what’s happening. Better yet if you have two dogs record them while they are playing.
If you want to take all of this to the next level, record yourself working with your dog, walking your dog, or getting the food ready. This way you can see exactly what your dog sees. It’s not always pretty but it gives you valuable information of the patterns your dog sees in you.
