My approach to street portraiture has changed quite a lot over the past couple of years. I used to employ a candid style of shooting, from a distance of about 5 meters, often shooting from the hip, hoping for good results. Although that method allows for much more “natural” scenes, recently I have been asking for permission, getting in close and getting much clearer upper body and face shots. I knew this guy would make an excellent subject from the minute I spotted him across the street, he was really relaxed in front of the camera and even played up to it somewhat. I have a great series of him sitting in this one spot, engaging in banter with us and others around us as he hand rolled and puffed away on his smokes.
