The black choir that sang at Prince Harry and Megan Markle's wedding ceremony in May has just signed its first record deal with Sony music. The choir has been around for twenty years, but their rendition of 'Stand by me' at the wedding was a true breakout moment. The Kingdom Choir will release their first album with Sony in November.

Smithsonian - National Museum of African American History and Culture. I wasn’t able to get to see everything in this incredible and emotionally moving tribute to African Americans. I intend to come back with my son for him to experience. If you intend to visit Washington, DC you must visit this museum. You will feel the love and unity from everyone who is there experiencing this tribute as well from all the staff that volunteer to work there. Historically, I was very educated and deeply moved by the experience. I thought I knew it all and now I know more.

Today we #celebrate a monumental day in our history, the day the abolition of slavery was announced. Please, join us in learning more about this country's history and celebrating what today stands for. #Juneteenth | #TheADLeaf #CelebrateFreedom

Interesting how it's okay to have every other type of pride, but African American/Black Pride. Even more interesting I didn't see one tv ad, store savings coupon, merchandise promoting, etc. about today. Now this is the one that's super interesting, Where are you when it's time to add red and black to that green? It's nothing wrong with celebrating other cultures, but make sure you celebrate your own. Also make sure the very people you make a point to celebrate with, celebrates with you. #juneteenth #june19th #freedom #africanamericanpride #unapologetic #proudtobeafricanamerican

Have you heard that old saying “Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”? Well it’s true. Artists get to paint what they feel and we interpret their feelings through the images they create. Read more from our blog! (Link in bio)⠀

The cover for the June edition of the New Yorker is a wonderful depiction of a parent and child by female African-American artist Loveis Wise. Loveis (pronounced 'love is') graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia this year.

'Black Women: Power and Grace' will be on display at the National Arts Club in New York city thru June 30th. The images capture the beauty and power of Black women, and their presence in social and political movements that have changed American society.
The image in this picture was taken by Louis Draper for an exhibition on 'The Negro Woman' more than 50 years ago. It was taken on a Harlem street.

Monica Stewart's beautiful print 'Ethereal Grace' shows an African-American woman enjoying life and expressing herself through dance. What's really great here is the way she rejects bright colors in favor of tans and browns made from Egyptian palm fronds. This gives the work an authentic ethnic flavor.

Organizing and joining together is how you gain the power to implement ideas. Shirley Chisholm was first African-American woman elected to Congress in 1968.

In Philadelphia-born artist Laurie Cooper's wonderful 'face reality" paintings, the challenge of living as a black person in a white dominated society is evoked in a visceral way. This painting shows a black woman peeling off a white skin to reveal her authentic identity.
The work also makes you think of W..E.B Dubois' The Souls of Black Folk and his idea that black people live with a 'double consciousness' in white society, presenting one face to the dominant culture and a different one for themselves. They are always looking at themselves through the eyes of others, and need to recover an authentic self to recover their self-esteem

There was a moment about to happen and it couldn't be stopped. Yes, studio 54 was a representation of some people of a generation who just wanted to have fun and celebrate hedonism and excess. People at that time were sick of the late 60's and the Vietnam war. Cocaine fuelled the discos and heightened the party goers sense of self fulfilling egos. But when the 80's rolled around a massive amount of wealth was generated through the stock markets and many were left behind feeling hopeless and feeling they didn’t fit in. House music promoted a sense of community and belonging but at the same time, partying, dancing and experiencing life in that very moment with the other party goers around you, no matter what your sex, sexuality, gender, religion, nationality, profession, race, socioeconomic status, everyone was somebody and welcomed. The music was the universal language that everyone understood.... #theloftnyc #undergroundparty #nyc #gaypride #housemusic #housemusiclovers #disco #danceallnight #danceallnightlong #dancefloor #warehouseparties #chicago #housemusicchicago #gayblack #gayblackmen #africanamericanpride

In 1986, a DJ by the name of Mike Pickering imported some music from Chicago and New York and started playing it at the Hacienda on Friday nights. The party was called "Nude" and the Friday night Saturday morning party quickly became legendary. House music infected the club goes ears with the sound of pure bliss. Soon, many clubs in England started hosting parties and the sound the party goes came for was house music..... something was happening in Britain and house music seem to fit the socio economic hardships of the times.... Thatcherism was taking a toll on the the generation and they needed an outlet to set their minds free......

The music scene in England had always been robust and full of talent. The British loved disco and they never let it go till this day. The Hacienda opened in 1982 in the city of Manchester. Largely supported by the record sales of the the group "New Order", the Hacienda became host to some of the most innovative musical artists of the Manchester scene.... #theloftnyc #undergroundparty #nyc #gaypride #housemusic #housemusiclovers #disco #danceallnight #danceallnightlong #dancefloor #warehouseparties #chicago #housemusicchicago #gayblack #gayblackmen #africanamericanpride

The 70's roared on and on the horizon the 80's was knocking at the door. Disco had become over commercialized and Studio 54 was getting tired and lame. The place was filled with fame whores and no one cared about the music However, New York and Chicago still had a thriving underground scene that began to organically come together. By the time July 12th 1979 rolled along, a disco demolition at a Chicago White Sox game began a count down to the end of the disco era.....Studio 54 and many of the commercialized discos of the hay day shut their doors and it was no longer "cool" to listen to disco, to be talking about disco or to be caught dead near a disco.... but where some things leave off, others pick up and are made better...New York and Chicago were only just beginning to see the potential of what was coming.....creativity never dies and a new generation of creative types were about to turn the whole thing upside down and take it to another level...... across the ocean, England had its own thing happening in cities such as London, Manchester and Liverpool.... #theloftnyc #undergroundparty #nyc #gaypride #housemusic #housemusiclovers #disco #danceallnight #danceallnightlong #dancefloor #warehouseparties #chicago #housemusicchicago #gayblack #gayblackmen #africanamericanpride #lahacienda #nightclub #nightlife

Steve Rubell was one of the founders and front man of Studio 54. He was the circus master making sure he only allowed the beautiful people through the doors while throwing only the best private parties in the world for his endless guest lists of celebrity A listers. As the 70’s slowly started coming to an end and people were making lots of money and wanted to show status, studio 54 was the place to go and showboat. However, this allowed the talent in the underground scene to take the music in a whole other direction, with a different approach to the parties and a different vibe, something deeper, something more meaningful, something that would make your soul feel alive.....

In 1977, on west 54th st in NYC , and at the height of the disco era, Studio 54 opened its doors with a strict dress policy and open drug use tolerance. It was world famous with celebrity guest lists from fashion designers to movie stars to politician’s wives. #theloftnyc #undergroundparty #nyc #gaypride #housemusic #housemusiclovers #disco #danceallnight #danceallnightlong #dancefloor #warehouseparties #chicago #housemusicchicago #gayblack #gayblackmen #africanamericanpride #nightclub #nightlife
