Been trying to learn more about my ppl since I’ve been given info on my great grandparents.. esp with traditions and culture fading out over time too. Thought this was interesting & powerful. ——————————————————————————-There was a time in the days of my ancestors when hair had a strong significance.. In the old cultural days that weren’t long ago the length of your hair was symbolic for wisdom & especially for your spiritual relationship with the creator or the “great spirit” as many Africans, Asians, and Natives described God. The way you chose to braid your hair represented what tribe you were from and also rather you were a made warrior of that tribe. It served as a ranking. Hair is said to have a connection with your energy level(proved scientifically, surprisingly) and back then was also believed to have some type of connection with the nature. Reminds me of Samson —————————————————————————

Not going to lie, I was worried about starting Dashiki Day and negative verbalized thoughts I was going to receive. Turns out, I actually get a lot of compliments from people of other ethnicities whenever I wear them! It’s comforting to know the allies around you in this culturally divided world. Join me next Thursday for Dashiki Day!! 📸: @ashley_marie_robillard

Congratulations to #AyannaPressley for winning the Democratic nomination for Massachusetts’ 7th Congressional District. She defeats Rep. Michael Capuano, a 10-term incumbent in the #Massachusetts Primary. So far, there is no Republican on the ballot in November’s midterm election, which means Pressley is almost certain to become the state’s first black congresswoman. Backed by #AlexandriaOcasioCortez, Pressley has called the New Yorker “my sister in change.” #PinkWave.

I’ve had this idea for a while. Dashiki day! Every Thursday, I’m going to post a picture or selfie of myself wearing a dashiki to show off my African-American/Black Pride. In effort to educate myself more of the beautiful culture my ethnicity derives from, I’m also going to research the dashiki origins, other aspects of the African culture, and black history. I’m excited to start this journey and welcome anyone to join me. Let’s be loud and proud! 📸: @lreynolds4318

There was a moment about to happen and it couldn't be stopped. Yes, studio 54 was a representation of some people of a generation who just wanted to have fun and celebrate hedonism and excess. People at that time were sick of the late 60's and the Vietnam war. Cocaine fuelled the discos and heightened the party goers sense of self fulfilling egos. But when the 80's rolled around a massive amount of wealth was generated through the stock markets and many were left behind feeling hopeless and feeling they didn’t fit in. House music promoted a sense of community and belonging but at the same time, partying, dancing and experiencing life in that very moment with the other party goers around you, no matter what your sex, sexuality, gender, religion, nationality, profession, race, socioeconomic status, everyone was somebody and welcomed. The music was the universal language that everyone understood.... #theloftnyc #undergroundparty #nyc #gaypride #housemusic #housemusiclovers #disco #danceallnight #danceallnightlong #dancefloor #warehouseparties #chicago #housemusicchicago #gayblack #gayblackmen #africanamericanpride

In 1986, a DJ by the name of Mike Pickering imported some music from Chicago and New York and started playing it at the Hacienda on Friday nights. The party was called "Nude" and the Friday night Saturday morning party quickly became legendary. House music infected the club goes ears with the sound of pure bliss. Soon, many clubs in England started hosting parties and the sound the party goes came for was house music..... something was happening in Britain and house music seem to fit the socio economic hardships of the times.... Thatcherism was taking a toll on the the generation and they needed an outlet to set their minds free......

The music scene in England had always been robust and full of talent. The British loved disco and they never let it go till this day. The Hacienda opened in 1982 in the city of Manchester. Largely supported by the record sales of the the group "New Order", the Hacienda became host to some of the most innovative musical artists of the Manchester scene.... #theloftnyc #undergroundparty #nyc #gaypride #housemusic #housemusiclovers #disco #danceallnight #danceallnightlong #dancefloor #warehouseparties #chicago #housemusicchicago #gayblack #gayblackmen #africanamericanpride

The 70's roared on and on the horizon the 80's was knocking at the door. Disco had become over commercialized and Studio 54 was getting tired and lame. The place was filled with fame whores and no one cared about the music However, New York and Chicago still had a thriving underground scene that began to organically come together. By the time July 12th 1979 rolled along, a disco demolition at a Chicago White Sox game began a count down to the end of the disco era.....Studio 54 and many of the commercialized discos of the hay day shut their doors and it was no longer "cool" to listen to disco, to be talking about disco or to be caught dead near a disco.... but where some things leave off, others pick up and are made better...New York and Chicago were only just beginning to see the potential of what was coming.....creativity never dies and a new generation of creative types were about to turn the whole thing upside down and take it to another level...... across the ocean, England had its own thing happening in cities such as London, Manchester and Liverpool.... #theloftnyc #undergroundparty #nyc #gaypride #housemusic #housemusiclovers #disco #danceallnight #danceallnightlong #dancefloor #warehouseparties #chicago #housemusicchicago #gayblack #gayblackmen #africanamericanpride #lahacienda #nightclub #nightlife

Steve Rubell was one of the founders and front man of Studio 54. He was the circus master making sure he only allowed the beautiful people through the doors while throwing only the best private parties in the world for his endless guest lists of celebrity A listers. As the 70’s slowly started coming to an end and people were making lots of money and wanted to show status, studio 54 was the place to go and showboat. However, this allowed the talent in the underground scene to take the music in a whole other direction, with a different approach to the parties and a different vibe, something deeper, something more meaningful, something that would make your soul feel alive.....

In 1977, on west 54th st in NYC , and at the height of the disco era, Studio 54 opened its doors with a strict dress policy and open drug use tolerance. It was world famous with celebrity guest lists from fashion designers to movie stars to politician’s wives. #theloftnyc #undergroundparty #nyc #gaypride #housemusic #housemusiclovers #disco #danceallnight #danceallnightlong #dancefloor #warehouseparties #chicago #housemusicchicago #gayblack #gayblackmen #africanamericanpride #nightclub #nightlife

The black choir that sang at Prince Harry and Megan Markle's wedding ceremony in May has just signed its first record deal with Sony music. The choir has been around for twenty years, but their rendition of 'Stand by me' at the wedding was a true breakout moment. The Kingdom Choir will release their first album with Sony in November.
