The license plates on Cuban cars that are owned by citizens begin with ‘P’ like this red one @forfearless is slaying on. The ‘P’ stands for “particular,” privately owned. License plates on government vehicles may start with other letters such as “A, B, C, F.” Colors of the plate vary by province.

@karinalahabana living her best life in Old Plaza, built by enslaved Africans and their descendants. •

This plaza was part of the area that the colonial wall once surrounded Habana Vieja (Old Havana). The wall was built between 1674 and 1797 and served as a barrier between the old city where “intramuros,” the ruling white class of Peninsulares (those born on the Iberian peninsula & the only ones allowed to hold public office in the Spanish colony) the barracones (barracks) and the not yet developed forest and swamps.

These barracks were where Africans were made to stay until they were bought or sold to work on plantations or in urban areas. Most of this human trafficking took place in Plaza Vieja. The city walls and the fortress system, sheltered the Habana Vieja “elites” from outside pirate attacks and the “undesirables” on the colonial color-class caste system. Those believed “lessers” had no protection from pirates.

“Extramuros,” were working class Criollos (those born in the colony), immigrants, mulattos, free and formerly enslaved AfroCubans. Those “extramuros” with closer proximity to whiteness lived closer to the wall of the protected city; even on the outside of it, the social order was strongly intact. “Intramuros,” ventured outside the walls, oftentimes for illicit sexual whims. White men often attended “Bailes de Cuna,” parties thrown in the homes of mulatas of economic means, to indulge in these whims. Similar to quadroon balls in New Orleans.

The wall’s demise started in the 1860s until the 20th century. This was mostly because despite (or perhaps because of) the spatial divide of the 33-foot wall, the “extramuro” city was growing bigger, especially after the construction of Villanueva Rail Station, a grand theater, and the paving of promenades. (The famed Paseo Del Prado was originally outside of the city wall and was one of the sites of the aforementioned barracks for enslaved Africans —barracones para la feria de esclavos) Its commerce was of special interest to the “intramuros” whose consistent aim was to establish and grow their wealth. •

@stephbroox vibrant in the port city of Trinidad, Cuba, where sugar & Africans were the country’s (and the Spanish crown’s) wellspring of wealth. •

Trinidad was colonized in the early 16th century. Its existence was vital to the sugar industry that flourished there and in the nearby Valley de los Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills) from the late 18th century to the late 19th century. •

After Haitians liberated themselves in 1804, Cuba become the leading manufacturer of sugar and slavery more profitable for the establishment.
At the peak of the sugar industry in Cuba, there were over seventy sugar cane mills in operation in the three valleys, with over 30,000 enslaved Africans working in the mills and on the sugar cane plantations that surrounded them. •

Cuba was the second to last country in the Americas to abolish slavery in 1886. Brazil was the last in 1888.

Every province in Panama has their version of pollera(s). In the predominant Afrodescendant province of Colón, the patchwork of the Congo pollera represents the petticoat scraps they were made from. Traditionally, the queen wears an all-white pollera with her crown, distinguishing her from the princesses, who wear flowers in their hair with colorful polleras. •

@thejonrobert posted up in front of the marble lion fountain in front of the former Convent San Francisco in Plaza San Francisco de Assis in Old Havana•

Plaza de San Francisco is one of the four leading plazas laid out in the 17th century. The spacious cobbled square, which was fully restored in the 1990s, takes its current name from the Franciscan convent built there originally in 1730.

Formerly a small inlet opening directly to the bay, the plaza was first laid out beginning in 1575 when the land was drained. From the start it was a place where galleons were serviced and enslaved Africans unloaded; one of the terminals of the Zanja Real (the first aqueduct in Havana) supplied water supply to the square to victual ships tied up at the wharves. •

It served as a marketplace and during the early colonial period a fair took place here every October with cock fights. In the late 17th-century and 18th centuries, many wealthy nobles built their homes on the cobbled plaza. The market and cockfight ring were then moved to Plaza Vieja after complaints from the wealthy resident and the convent’s monks.

@beapearl channeling the color energy of Chango’s intensity (red) and Ochun’s divine sweetness (yellow) at Callejon de Hamel in Centro Havana. •

In red and white, the Catholic Saint, Santa Barbara stands behind the double-headed ax for the Orisha of drums, lightning rays, & merriment Chango. Santa Barbara was one of the white Catholic saints Africans were made to accept through extreme violence during the transatlantic slave trade. To continue with their belief systems, our African ancestors cleverly hid their African Orishas behind the imposed Catholic saints that shared similar attributes, so that these traditions were not lost. The fact that we call upon these West African Orishas is our ancestors resistance and resolve to keep our legacies alive.

Every Orisha is owner of a domain in nature and represent elements of the human condition. The ax is among the yellow sopera with flowers, in front of the wall fixture of the Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre (Our Lady of Charity) the mask for Ochun, the owner of rivers, womb, and gold. Elegua, to the right of the yellow sopera, certainly will never be forgotten as he is the gatekeeper, in charge of our luck and represent the polarities of life.

@badgalriri frolicking in Plaza Catedral in Old Havana

The cobbled Plaza de la Catedral (Cathedral Square) was the last square to be constructed in Habana Vieja. Originally known as the Plazuela de la Cíenaga, (little swamp square) rainwater and refuse collected in it. A aljibe (cistern) was built in 1587 to supply water to ships in the harbor. As the “al” in “aljibe” signifies, this word is of Arab origin as is the method. The technology of aqueducts and waterwheels was the Moor improvement on the Roman aqueducts installed in Spain prior to Moorish conquest on the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish colonizers then brought this knowledge to the colonies where enslaved Africans built up the infrastructure of the city. •

On the east side of the plaza is the Casa de Conde de Lombillo. Built in 1741, this former home of a slave trader houses Cuba’s first post office. The building now holds historical lithographs.
