The painter Julio Pomar (1926-2018) in his studio in Lisbon, November 2016.
He passed away yesterday 22nd May aged 92 years old.
I had the pleasure to interview him on that evening in November 2016 just before going to Senegal. I prepared the interview for almost a week. It was the end of the day but he drank an expresso holding it with his hands shaking, that after sometime stopped shaking. I was worried he could spill the coffee, he wasn't, he was totally in control and ready to talk. It was my first interview, as a young journalist trying to interview his heros. I was always impressed by his courage of "non compliance", of going in the path of genius against the "status quo" against the rules with and restless creativity, to do what he wanted to do whatever others could say. At same point, I gained courage to ask him about a period in life where we tried sculpture and there was a change in his painting, an apparent period of lostness, I said: "I checked and this period of your life was when you had around 40 years old, was it a middle age crisis of the man, not the painter?" after a silence of honest reflection he replied "Maybe, it could be...". But I could see the reply in his eyes and in his silence. After a 1h30 of interview I was impressed by his lucidity, humility and at same time endless generosity and artist soul. One of the greatest man I had the pleasure to meet and talk. The interview was never published.
