2743. “My mother; that was just from sitting on the couch with my mother.” As the youngest of 13 siblings, Johanne used to sit on the couch with her mother, observing as she knitted, sewed and crocheted. Eventually Johanne picked up the skills on her own and used them as a way to keep busy whenever she was feeling anxious. Over the years, she’s knitted hundreds of finger puppets for hospital patients and hundreds of Izzy dolls for Canadian soldiers, all in addition to her own belongings like the unfinished throw blanket, which lay on her lap as we talked. Originally from the small towns of Quebec, she moved to Montreal when she was 18 years old. There, Johanne got married, worked at an advertising agency and had her first child while she worked towards her business degree. Eventually, though, she moved to Mississauga, had two other children and took on odd jobs while she raised her family. Fifteen years ago, Johanne, her husband (who’s one of 12 siblings) and their kids then moved here to London and settled in their current home 9 years ago. She tested the 100+ year old home first, sharing that she stood in it for 2 hours to ensure there were no ghosts hanging around. Fortunately, though, she felt good here and has loved living in this house, which she now rents out as an @airbnb to travelers like me! So nice to meet you, Johanne, and thank you for being a wonderful host! #10kfriends #canada #ldnont #mother #knitting #sewing #crocheting #puppets #izzydolls #quebec #family #secretary #airbnb #meetingpeople
How we met: Johanne is my Airbnb host here in London! But I found her place though @rodneylover, the man who hooked me up with my Canada trip through his businesses, @shopldnont and @atworkofficefurniture!
