20 years ago this week, I filmed this little music video for a German production company - a house remix of a famous Run DMC track. It was meant to play exclusively in Germany, and perhaps in other European countries if it did better than expected in Germany.
It blew the fuck up. It began playing every hour, on the hour, on every music television channel in Europe, and soon began to be played incessantly in every country in the world.
At this time, my crew, Soul Control, were obsessively training what we thought were called Air Tracks, because we had seen VHS footage of practices and battles in Europe - particularly in Germany - which had been shot by Easy Roc, as well as Battle of the Year footage. Among this footage were scattered clips of bboys like Storm, Swift, and Ibrahim spinning in the air. We later learned that they called this an Air Twist, and it had not yet been advanced very far. We in Soul Control took it upon ourselves to advance this idea as far as we could, starting in late 1995.
Two years later, this was one of many combinations I had developed. Knowing that this video would play in Germany and perhaps the rest of Europe, I decided to show them, through this video, that some no-name bboy somewhere in America was gonna beat them at their own game.
We had no idea it would blow up the way it did. I was blessed to have played a small role, and to have had some impact on so many people's dance careers.
