Day 761. "Armed with skill and it's frustration...and grace, too." In 1995, Dan Ackroyd stood before a live studio audience in New York City to proudly introduce "his friends" THE TRAGICALLY HIP. For 5 plus minutes, lead singer and poetic architect, Gord Downie leaped and jerked around the stage performing what what would become the band's eponymous classic "Grace, Too." .
"Makeshift we are, you imagine us here, and here we are." Although The Tragically Hip never broke through on the International music scene, their music has become the soundtrack to Canadiana. Today, Gord Downie succumbed to brain cancer at the age of 53 and with his with his passing, we have lost one of the greatest poets of our generation.
My instagram feed is typically thematic of my personal experiences through recovery, divorce and life thereafter. However, I'd be absolutely remissed if I didn't honour Mr. Downie, tonight. On countless occasions, I looked to Gordie's music for inspiration. He was outspoken, cool as fuck, a genius with a pen and "Heaven is a better place today." When I was just 18 years old, I heard you say for the first time that this is "No dress rehearsal. This is our life," and I'm finally, at 39 years of age, beginning to understand what you meant.
Thank you, Gordie.
And goodnight. You will be missed.
