Can we have an open conversation about TONES?! This is one of my favorites, literally the SWEETEST client eva! We’ve been working on lightening and for her last appointment she showed me an inspiration pic that was definitely brighter and cooler. Stylists, we are totally used to this (can y’all feel me?!). I think we have all learned to accept this blessing and curse that is IG/Pinterest pics. I haven’t had great luck with trying to talk clients out of cool tones in the past. So when this babe showed me a cool toned pic, I said “let’s do it!” And I nailed it. Not long after that I received a sweet text from her explaining that she didn’t feel the cool tone (that she asked for) was flattering on her medium, warm skin tone. Luckily this is an easy fix right? And it’s not very often that a client asks for a WARMER adjustment. My heart was bursting with happiness lol (ok I can totally be dramatic sometimes ). Guess what guys. I FAILED HER. I’ve gotten so used to cool cool cool and everyone being so inflexible about it, that I didn’t educate her that “hey girl, your beautiful warm skin tone looks best with a complimentary warm hair color tone.” She came back today for another gloss (@redken Shades Gloss in 9G+8WG) and O.M.G. Look how perfect this is. Clients, please know that warmth on purpose (lightening and toning with a warm color) is a completely different animal than warmth on accident (under processing with lightener and/or improper toning formulation and/or fading aka “brassy”). So can we all please give this dream client a big round of applause please ? #clientgoals Lesson learned: return to the colorist I once was and fight for the right of warm tones! Yaaaasssss!
