I recently purchased a grab bag of basswood and ripped a few pieces for whittling practice. I’ve made nothing impressive at all. But that’s ok. If I try to make a face or a snowman I’ll just disappoint myself. So I’m just futzing around, learning how to use my knife, how to sharpen, developing blisters and callouses. I’m not immediately good at everything I try, despite the narcissistic impressions I give. But I will spend hours and hours becoming mediocre at something because I’d rather say I tried than, “I wouldn’t know, I’m too scared of failure.” Whittling is fucking hard (for me). I don’t suspect I’ll ever make anything incredible. But I do think it will find its way into my other crafts. There will come a day where I’ll be grateful for having practiced this skill.
