ASUU wants FG to negotiate with union to end strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), says it is ready to negotiate with government toward ending its one-week old industrial action.

Its President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who was guest on TVC News Breakfast show on Tuesday, also advised government to establish an education bank for proper funding of universities.

He regretted the attitude of government to the university lecturers’ demands, saying that letters notifying government of the strike, which were submitted to the education and labour ministries on Nov. 5, had not been replied. “We wrote to inform the ministries that we had resumed our strike. We told them that we had resumed the strike we suspended in Sept. 2017 because government failed to implement agreements we signed. “The ministries signed to acknowledge receipt of the copies we gave them, but none has written a reply to us,” he said.

He accused the political class of strangling primary and secondary education in Nigeria, saying that 24 states had failed to access the Universal Basic Education Commission funds for 2018.

According to him, that has left UBEC with more than N60 billion that states have yet to access.

Ogunyemi observed that the federal government, which had consistently allocated seven per cent to education in the last two years, was not sincere in the claim that it was declaring a state of emergency in the education sector. “The Federal Government suddenly woke up from slumber and announced a state of emergency in the education sector. It also promised to allocate 15 per cent of its budget to the sector. We find this unbelievable and deceitful. “We feel that the `sudden’ promise has more to do with the fact that we are in an election year,” he declared.

He alleged that the ruling class in Nigeria had no concern for the education of the poor.

NAN reports that the lecturers had resolved to remain at home until their demands, which include proper funding of the universities, are met.

Other demands included the payment of full salaries by state-owned universities, payment of earned academic allowances, among others. (NAN) #amebo9jatv #gossipgirl #amebo9ja #amebo

JUST IN: Uzodinma, Imo APC guber candidate, arrested in Abuja

Hope Uzodinma, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo state, has been arrested.

He was arrested him at Nnamdi Azikiwe airport in Abuja on Sunday.

Okoi Obono-Obla, chairman of the Operatives of the special presidential investigation panel for recovery of public property panel, confirmed this to The Cable on Monday.

He said Uzodinma was arrested over a breach of contract. Obono-Obla said a company of the senator representing Imo west senatorial district was awarded a $12m contract by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) for the dredging of Calabar channel but did not execute the contract. “We have been looking for him for the past 13 months over a case of failure to execute a contract of $12m dollars awarded for the dredging of the Calabar channels awarded by the Nigeria Ports Authority,” he said. “We have written countless letters to the clerk of the national assembly in accordance with their procedure. He has shunned all our invitations and he has been very evasive. “We pasted our assets declaration form because the first procedure when we are investigating you is to give you our assets declaration form and within 30 days, you are required to fill and return them. If you fail to return them, then we can charge you to court. We have charged him to before the federal high court for failure to declare his assets. He has notice of our invitation. We pasted the asset declaration form in his residence in accordance with the law.” Asked if the arrest has anything to do with the crisis rocking the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obono-Obla said the panel only did its job. “It has nothing to do with politics. Why is it that each time we invite somebody, people will begin to read political meaning to it?” he asked. “We have no business with what is happening in Imo state. We have been given a job to do and we have to do it. If he has issues, he should have taken steps to clear all those issues before vying for the election. We have no business with that. We have been asked to do something and we are doing it.” Credit: Thecableng

ASUU Strike Lingers On After One week As Govt Is Yet To Invite Lecturers For Negotiations

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the federal government is yet to begin any dialogue with the union over the ongoing strike.

The national president of the union, Biodun Ogunyemi, said this in a phone interview with PREMIUM TIMES Sunday evening.
The union embarked on strike one week ago over the poor funding of Nigerian universities and an alleged plan by the federal government to increase student’s fees and introduce an education bank. The union also accuses the federal government of not implementing a 2017 agreement.

The union leader said ASUU has not seen any invitation from government to discuss the strike.
“They know how to reach us. That’s not how we’ve been communicating,” Mr Ogunyemi said of an appeal by the education minister last week that the strike be suspended to allow for negotiations. “There are two issues that we’ve raised. But by his own attitude and actions, it was obvious to that he didn’t want that. That was why we said we have seen enough.
“Our members remain resolute and report we are getting from branches indicate that our members are determined. Government cannot continue to handle education with levity which is the focus for the development of any country" he said.
Mr Ogunyemi said the strike has so far been successful across campuses but for few vice chancellors.
“We have report of one or two crisis where the vice chancellors are trying to give us problems. Like Adekunle Ajasin University, the VC threatened to sack our members and we tried to tell him to go ask from history,” he said.
Efforts to get the education and labour ministries to speak on why no negotiation has started since the strike begun were unsuccessful.

However, earlier last week, the education minister, Adamu Adamu, urged the union to exercise restraint in its demands.
The minister said the demands of the union dated back to 2009 during the administration of late President Umaru Yar’Adua, when Nigeria had not yet entered into a recession

Lagos-Ibadan expressway will be completed in 2021 – Julius Berger

The contractor handling the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project, Julius Berger has said that the project will be completed by 2021.

The Operations Manager, Julius Berger, Thamm Olaf, told the Senate Committee on Works, led by its Chairman, Kabiru Gaya, on Sunday, that the project, which was to be completed in 2017, was stalled due to paucity of funds and the recent expansion, Punch Metro reports.

Gaya and other members of the committee, who were on an oversight visit to road projects in Lagos, however, stated that they were not happy about the slow pace of the work, despite the efforts and funds that had been put into it.

He said the Federal Government had spent a lot of money on the road and others across the country and had moved cost of road infrastructure from N500bn to 600bn in the 2019 budget to accommodate more road construction. “The project is good as it will take care of traffic but we are not happy with the speed and so we expect the contractor to increase the pace of work, even though there were amendments on the road,” he said.

Gaya also told journalists that the contractor of the Tin Can Island Truck Park, Borini Prono, had said that the project, expected to ease traffic congestion around Apapa Wharf, would be completed in December.

He said the project had reached 97 per cent completion while construction of the shoreline, recently added to protect the park, had commenced.

He said: “When we visited this site in 2015, the construction was less than 70 per cent; now it is 97 per cent because money has been paid and we insist that it must be finished by December. “We have also said that the facilities are not good enough for a trailer park; there should be more toilets, restaurant and even a small clinic.” The committee also inspected the Apapa Wharf Road, a two-kilometre concrete road being constructed by AG Dangote and expected to be completed before the end of the year; the Leventis Bridge, which is expected to be completed by Julius Berger by the first quarter of 2019; and the Third Mainland Bridge, which would be partially closed in 2019 for rehabilitation.
