Meet @gayuukaran " I volunteered for an org that rescued captivated elephants..I was part of a team which planted almost 2k saplings to build a natural habitat for these elephants..I fell in love wen i saw how humble n loving they r which is totally contrasting to their appearance..the saying"appearances are often deceptive" felt so meaningful that day..since then i have been to that place back and forth multiple times and have taken my friends as well..An elephant is nothing but a big bundle of joy, love innocence and humbleness..i love them to the core"

❀️❀️❀️🐘❀️❀️❀️🐘❀️❀️❀️ Have you ever seen more beautiful faces?!?! Meet the beautiful elephant orphans at the #RetetiElephantOrphanage in Northern Kenya.
If you love elephants and aren’t already familiar with the amazing work being done by @r.e.s.c.u.e, go now and give them a follow. As the very first community run elephant orphanage of its kind, the work they are doing on behalf of the elephants in Northern Kenya is simply amazing and inspiring beyond words. Reteti just recently celebrated their one year anniversary - and what a successful year it has been. Located in the heart of Samburu land, the orphanage is run by the community, and has already achieved so much, as the presence of such a facility is changing the once difficult relationship between the Samburu Tribe and the elephants they share the land with. In the past, due to a deep fear and misunderstanding of elephants, the human/wildlife conflict was a constant presence in this part of Africa. Thankfully, due to the opening of the orphanage and their community outreach, the Samburu people are learning how to co-exist peacefully with elephants, and are now becoming a vital part of protecting and caring for them, as opposed to being deeply fearful of them as they once were. The key to success in conservation, has always been a good and trusting relationship shared between local communities and the animals they live amongst - and thanks to the work being done at Reteti, Northern Kenya’s elephants now have hopes of a much brighter and more safe future!! Sending the biggest THANK YOU to all of the amazing humans involved in making the orphanage a success - and to the legendary @amivitale, who has long been one of my heroes, for using her voice and her camera to bring the much needed awareness to this amazing place. 🐘β™₯οΈπŸ™πŸΌπŸŒ

Shaba, the proxy matriarch of the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) herd teaches younger orphan Bawa how to forage and find the juiciest bits on the tree. Under the eye of caretakers, Shaba leads her small herd into the bush outside the sanctuary, stripping leaves, tasting bark, pushing down small trees, taking mud baths. Elephants are ecosystem β€œengineers” who feed on low brush and bulldoze small trees, promoting growth of grasses, which in turn attract bulk grazers like buffalo, endangered Grevy’s zebras, eland, and oryx, themselves prey for carnivores: lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, leopards.

#RepostSave @natgeo with @repostsaveapp ・・・ Photo by @amivitale. Rimland Lemojong, a Samburu keeper sits with Kinya, a two week old elephant that fell into a well in Sera Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya. After waiting close to 36 hours, Kinya's mother never came back for her and she was brought to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), the first ever community owned and run elephant sanctuary in all of Africa.

What’s happening at @r.e.s.c.u.e, without fanfare, is nothing less than the beginnings of a transformation in the way Samburus relate to wild animals they once feared. When not long ago the elephant would have been taken out of the well and left to die, the warriors now call @r.e.s.c.u.e to save her. This oasis where orphans grow up, learning to be wild so that one day they can rejoin their herds, is as much about the people as it is about elephants.

Swimming Elephant 🐘 is lit πŸ”₯πŸ”₯ This is Rajan. He is a 60 years old Asian elephant and he is the last of his kind. He was brought to the Andaman Islands for logging. He along with a small group of about 10 elephants were brutally forced to learn how to swim in the ocean so that they could bring the logged trees to nearby boats and then eventually swim on to the next island. When logging became banned in 2002 Rajan was out of a job. He has been living out his days on one of the Andaman Islands and his Mahout (caretaker) named Nazroo, who have been together for 30 years. They have an incredible bond and it was amazing to share some time with them. Rajan is truly the last of his kind. When he dies he will we will probably never see an ocean swimming elephant again.

Photo by @amivitale. Tufts of a mane are shown on an orphaned adolescent grevy's #zebra at Sarara Camp (@sararacamp). Sarara camp is home to orphan giraffe, zebra, Kudu, Gerunuk, warthogs, and waterbuck who all will one day be released back into the wild to live as they were always meant to. Also known as the imperial zebra, the Grevy's is the most threatened of the three species of zebra. Compared with other zebras, it is tall, has large ears, and its stripes are narrower.
