Animal of the day: Giant anteater🌾
This large animal is a close relative to the sloth and can be found in central and south America🌎
Although they are good swimmers and climbers they live mostly on the ground, where they feed on(you guessed it) mostly ants and termites🐜
It finds the ants by following their smell and rips open the nest with it's long claws on the front legs. Then it's sticks it's long and very sticky tongue in the holes and collects the insects. ⠀
They are large animals that can grow 182-217 cm (5.97-7.12 ft) in length and weigh 27-41 kg(60-90 lb)😱
Anteater are mostly active during the night and sleeps during the day, where they dig a shallow cavity lay in🍃
They have a big bushy tail that it uses to cover itself with as it rests curled up in it's hole.⠀
They are a vulnerable species that typically avoid humans, as they have been hunted for their meat for a long time👎

Hermit crabs are crustaceans. They have jointed limbs, claws, a hard exoskeleton, eyes on stalks, and two sets of antennae.
#AnimalFact - Crabs interact with each other and are often found in large groups. Marine hermit crabs live in the ocean and land hermit crabs live primarily on land.
The hermit crab is not like other crabs. The hermit crab’s abdomen does not have a hard covering. To protect the abdomen, a hermit crab inhabits an empty snail shell.
The shell also stores water for the crab. Hermit crabs have gills that need to remain moist in order for them to breath.

Animal of the day: Long-tounged fly🐝
This may look like a mosquito but is actually a long-tounged fly and can be found in southern Africa🌍
It is of course best known for it's long tongue, which in the photo is rolled back, they are even longer, actually 5 times it's own bodylength🙀
They use this tongue to eat out of reach nectar, and can even hover in the air while collecting. This allows it to find and eat nectar that other insects can not🌹
While during this is collects pollen from plants that otherwise would not have insects visiting and spreads it onto other plants - so it has a very important role in the ecosystem, some plants even rely on them for survival🥀

🌼SOMETHING NEW...🌼
So I’ve been having a bit of artist’s block lately and I’ve been trying to find new things to motivate me to draw again, and I found it! Every Friday I’m going to (try my best!) to post a new animal fact with a corresponding illustration!! I know today is Thursday but I couldn’t wait to post the first one😁 It’ll also allow me to post something on a somewhat regular basis, and of course I’ll be posting other things too. Might even turn these into cards in the future!

SPANGLED EMPEROR Photo by @jordan_robins Back in 2002 it was not clear whether spangled emperor actually changed sex from female to male, as other lethrinids are known to do, or whether the sexes remained separate. Recent work by researchers in Western Australia has now confirmed that its really a bit of both. In WA all immature L. nebulosus had non-functioning female gonads, then at around 28cm long (2 to 3 years old) some changed sex to male and became reproductively active, while the remainder stayed as immature females until they began maturing one or two years later (50 per cent of females matured by 39cm at 3 to 5 years of age). This reproductive strategy is known as a non-functional protogynus hermaphrodite, which is basically identical to having separate sexes but still, quite a thought for us! I wonder what gender you would be based on your maturity!
🐟🐠🐡🦈 If you have an animal that you want to know more about please let me know, I'd love to discover :D @darwinningfacts for more 💙.

Regrann from @onegreenplanet - Phuket Elephant Park has just given a new life to yet another elephant whose past was filled to the brim with work and weariness. Boon-sib is 70 years old and, up until now, has been working day in and day out in an elephant trekking camp in Phuket, Thailand. Thankfully, this majestic animal’s future will look nothing like what she survived in the past. Boon-sib finally has a home where all that is expected of her is for her to get as much rest as she needs and be as happy as possible during her “retirement.”
Before she was rescued, Boon-sib worked long hours in the blazing sun. She was saddled with heavy chairs on her back so that the tourists she gave rides to could sit on them.
“She will be nourished, respected and loved tenfold at her new home Phuket Elephant Park,” the team says.

Here’s a quick fact for you: humpback whales have a life span of about 45-50 years, females mature around age 5-7 and will begin reproducing, they will have a calf every two to three years

This awesome shot was taken by Trish Minogue ( @trishminogue )

Animal of the day: South American Coati🌳

The coati is a member of the racoon family and this one can be found from tropical the subtropical south America🌎
They live in forests, are active during the day and spend time both on the ground and in the trees🌴
They can grow to a length of 85-113 cm and weigh up to 7,2 kg (15,9 lb) and can be recognized by white rings on the tail, they can however be quite weak. ⠀
The are omnivorous, which means they eat pretty much anything but their diet mainly consists of fruit, invertebrates like insects and worms, small animals and bird eggs🦗🍊
They use their long snout the poke through holes and crevices in the ground and trees to find small animals, just as shown in the photo. ⠀
Females usually lives in large groups called bands consisting of 15-30 animals and the males live alone🚹

It’s #TongueOutTuesday AND just a couple of days before #WorldGiraffeDay! Did you know the giraffe's tongue is 18-20 inches long and prehensile! (Prehensile is just a fancy way of saying grasping.) This allows the giraffe to delicately remove leaves from the thorny acacia with little concern for the sharp thorns. Here’s a slo-mo of Habari enjoying a slice of sweet potato.

Animal of the day: Mud crab🦀
This dark green to deep brown crab can be found in esuaries and mangroves of Africa, Asia and Australia🌏
It is a rather big crab that is known for their meat content and great taste. ⠀
They can grow up to 24 cm (9,4 in) in width and weigh up to 3,5 kg (7,7 lb) - that is a big crab!😱
They are many as well, the females can lay a million eggs at a time and the juveniles usually stay in mangroves untill they reach 10-15 cm (3.9-5-9 in) in length then they move into the intertidal waters💦
Because of their size, much meat and delicious taste, way too many was caught - called over-crabbing and a restriction had to be made: It is not allowed to catch females at all and only males over 6 inches💧
Not only humans are their enemies, they are also very canibalistic. When a crab grows too big for it's shell it has to change it and crawls out of it's old. In a little while it has a soft shell and here other crabs will try at catch and eat it😈

Regrann from @theslothinstitute - What has you smiling this #SlothFact Monday?
For 3 fingered sloths, it’s their unique facial muscular structure!
Without any expressive muscles in their face, 3 fingered sloths give the appearance of always smiling. This means that despite their facial expressions, a smiling sloth is not always a happy sloth!

Regrann from @nrt_kenya - Did you know that gerenuks can go their entire life without drinking water? Their diet of leaves and shoots contains enough moisture to sustain them, which is why they can survive so well in north Kenya’s arid conditions. #gerenuk #iucn #northkenya #animalfact #wildlifefact #wildlifephotography #wild #kenya #gamephotography #animals #safarianimals #safaritour #safarilife eafricansafaris.com - #regrann

Animal of the day: Black piny-tailed iguana🦎

This Iguana is the fastest running species of lizard in the world and can be found naturally in Mexico and central America, but has also been introduced to florida🌎
It can be recoqnized by the prescence of enlarged spiny scales on the tail and the distinctive black markings on the scales.⠀
They can grow quite big with males up to 1,3 m (4 ft. 3 in) and females up to 1 m (3 ft 3 in)😱
They are active during the day and great climbers! They like climb trees to find food like fruit, flowers, leaves and stems. They can even eat the fruit of the manchineel tree, that are highly poisonous to other animals🌳
They also like to hide in crevices and relax on rocks, where they use the sun to warm up their body☀️
They are the worlds fastest lizard with a max speed of 34,6 km/h (21,5 mph) and they uses this to escape predators. ⠀
If they are confronted however, they will use their tail to lash out at the predator and bite if necessary🐕
