The best time to see manatees in great numbers is during the cooler months when they congregate at natural spring openings. -
-
Myth: Manatees have lots of blubber to insulate them from the cold.
🙅🏼‍♀️🙅🏼‍♀️
-
Fact: Despite their large size, manatees have minimal fat storage (it’s mainly stomach and intestine) and are very cold sensitive. Natural springs offer a constant stream of warm water and often harbor many sleeping manatees during the cooler months. However, human inhabitants have begun blocking paths to springs, encouraging manatees to become more resourceful. Over the past decade, many manatees have been seen setting up camp near private power plants, utilizing the heated discharge much like they would at a spring. Sadly, as these ‘electrical blankets’ become outdated and shutdown, the manatees that have grown accustomed to this modern source of heat will arrive to a sad demise. -
-
What other animals do you know that have replaced their natural behavior with something that is man made? 👩🏫🤷🏼‍♀️ -

Characterized by its long legs, long neck, and distinctive spotted pattern, many people first believed the giraffe was a cross between a leopard and a camel, which is reflected in its scientific name, Giraffa camelopardalis.
The male giraffe is both taller and heavier than the female.

Northwestern crow (Corvus caurinus)
~
Has a very small distribution only in the Pacific Northwest! We’re quite lucky to consider this species common here.
Not only that, they’re quite badass too – they form gangs and chase away their larger relatives, the Common Raven (Corvus corax).

Did you know? A single coral is made up of thousands of individual polyps. Each polyp has a "mouth," which is surrounded by small tentacles containing stinging cells that help the coral to catch its prey.

Rails, the family of birds including such familiar species as the common moorhen, have a talent for colonising islands. Unfortunately for them, so do humans. During a period of around 2000 years, ending c1200 CE, prehistoric Polynesians spread across the Pacific. Up to 1800 bird species may have died due to this migration, including up to 900 rails. The Wake Island rail was one of the survivors. Having adapted to deal with introduced rats, these flightless birds were doing well on their Pacific atoll. All this changed in 1942. Wake fell to Imperial Japan. By 1945, the island’s starving Japanese garrison had eaten this species to extinction. #extinct #extinction #extinctspecies #extinctionisforever #lostspecies #lostbird #lostbirds #lostbirdsofinstagram #sixthmassextinction #anthropocene #extinctbird #extinctbirds #natureillustration #animalfacts #naturalhistoryillustration

Animal of the day: Wrinkled hornbill🐤

This large bird can be found on the thai-malay peninsula, in Sumatra and Borneo🌏
It is easy recognizable by it's large colorful bill that is fused to it's skull. ⠀
Their feather a mostly black, whit a little yellow on the head and neck and a blue eyering. These live in the rainforest, where they mainly eats fruit like figs, but sometimes also small animals like frogs and insects and they do not drink water, as they get all fluids form their food🦗🌈
When wrinkled hornbills mate, they stay monogamously together for life. They find a hole in a tree, to use for nesting and the female plaster the entrance with mud and droppings untill the hole is so small that the mother and chicks can not exit🌳
They are for a couple of month totally dependent on the father to catch and regurgitate food for them, after this the female and chicks breaks out🐣

Another crackin primate fact from @nature_man_jeff !
・・・
The white faced capuchin is a very intelligent species of monkey. They can be found throughout central and south America (the first picture was taken by me when I was in Costa Rica, after he stole @logan.kellyyy 's banana). It is there intelligence that leads to them often being used in films and TV shows, such as in "Friends". If you like primates, I would highly recommend you listen to @primematespod who inspired today's fact.

Red-browed Finches (Neochmia temporalis) are found in a wide variety of habitats, from various types of woodland to open heathlands in the east of mainland Australia, mainly east of the Great Dividing Range. They’re gregarious and often seen in flocks and foraging for seeds on the ground. There are a number of similarly coloured finches – largely olive with a red flash at the tail - but the Red-browed Finch is easy to identify by the red band across their face – a red brow, in fact. ⠀

Absolutely by far the strangest and most outrageous of animal #romanticrituals is exhibited by Flatworms. Actually it’s not so romantic - but perhaps if you’re a worm this is pretty charming. They engage in what is called ‘penis fencing,’ an act of battle meant to secure a mate. Flatworms are ‘hermaphrodites’ which means that weirdly they can inseminate, and also be inseminated. Some species have two penises and one or more genital pores for the process of reproduction. Flatworms meet and penis fence in order to determine who will be the female and who will be the male. Both worms want to be male because the female role is much more difficult: it takes more energy and sacrifice to develop eggs and raise young. Even worms know this! Okay, not really, but nature knows it and Flatworms fight it out to the finish with the one that pierces the skin of the other winning out the hideous affair. Wolves are a key species for a healthy ecosystem.🌏 🦌 They keep deer populations under control so that healthy vegetation can grow, thus increasing the numbers of other wildlife that live in these areas. 🐦
This became evident with the Yellow Stone National Park, where the reintroduction of wolves astounded scientists by having a great affect on the health of the river beds, bird populations, and foliage just by living in a place they belonged originally. ❤️ 🌏 .

Some parrotfish chew on coral all day. They not only eat the hard calcium carbonate skeleton, but the soft-bodied organisms that cover the skeleton and the algae that live inside them along with the bacteria living inside the coral skeleton. When parrotfish poop out the coral they've eaten, the soft tissues are absorbed and what remains comes out as sand. A whole lot of sand!! Thanks @regular_doc for this fun fact! ⠀

Although meerkats seem so sweet they are actually probably the animal I’m most scared of getting bitten by 😂 I mean I am very unlikely to be bitten by a large carnivore so I’m not very stressed about that but Meerkats get all up in your grill if you try to put food in their enclosure. If they bite you they have extremely sharp little teeth and can lock their jaw on you so it’s incredibly difficult to get them off! They can also transmit all kinds of diseases so let’s not hold meerkats unless you are properly trained boys and girls. Honestly give me a quick baboon bite any day over that - much easier to deal with 😂 #funfactfriday
P.S. the meerkat in this photo is Whiskey - he was pretty friendly with people when he came in as a pup but has since grown up and moved into a family and doesn’t really like to climb on people as much - which is a good thing ☺️

Animal of the day: raccoon dog🐾

This is a canid(dog family) that is native to east Asia and it is actually NOT closely related to the raccoon🐼
They have very short legs and a body length of 45-71 cm (18-28 in) with a weight of up to 10 kg (22 llb). ⠀
They omnivorous, which means they will eat pretty much anything including insects, rodents, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, carrion and fruits, nuts and berries🐹
They sound much like foxes, because they don't bark but instead growns and makes these long-drawn melancholy whines🗣️
They live in burrows underground and are the only canid known to hibernate, if the snow gets too deep. They will put on 18-23% more fat and lower their activity through the cold period - the ones they doesn't put on enough weight before hibernating will not make it through❄️
They have natural predators like wolves and gray foxes who hunt the pups but the worst enemy is humans who hunt them for meat and fur, but sometimes also to keep them down in countries where they have been introduced as an invasive species🦊

Squid are next up in our #romanticrituals theme because of their sheer stamina! Scientists at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, have uncovered the bizarre and intricate mating rituals of the deep water creature. Squid mating begins with a “circling nuptial dance,” where teams of squid continuously circle around spawning beds in an area that can reach 200 meters across. At daybreak, the squid (or squids, whichever you prefer) begin to mate and continue all day long, halting the activity only long enough for the female to dive down and deposit her eggs. Once she comes back to the circling area, she reunites with her male companion and the process begins again. At dusk, the males and females go offshore to feed and rest. Then, at the first sight of sun, they head back to the spawning area and go at it again all day long. In fact, it’s believed that the routine can last for up to two weeks, which undoubtedly results in some sore tentacles!
