Over the years, time has taken its toll. The building became obsolete due to intensive use and laborious maintenance. In 2000, the city of Antwerp signed an agreement with Multi Development to revitalize the city hall. That was part of a major revitalization of the Antwerp shopping circuit. That did not happen without a struggle. In December of 2000, a violent fire destroyed the entire City Hall. Only the monumental staircases, the historic façade and the steel roof construction remained intact. A long process of permit applications delayed the revival of the building. In 2004, light suddenly appeared at the end of the tunnel. Multi Development acquired the project for the redevelopment of the Stadsfeestaal and immediately started work. What followed was a clever example of planning, vision, craftsmanship and intensive work.
