On this day (20th March) in 2015 the Yemeni crisis took a deadly turn: The al-Badr and al-Hashoosh mosques in Sana'a, the country's largest city, came under quadruple suicide attack during midday prayers. The blasts killed 142 people and wounded more than 351, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in Yemen's history. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL / ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack. According to the United Nations, 16,200 people have been killed in Yemen since 2015 including 10,000 civilians. The humanitarian situation in what was already one of the world’s poorest nations, is now, after Syria, the most critical on the planet, with 20% of Yemenis severely food insecure.
Sana'a, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on account of its distinctive architectural character. The World Heritage Committee has also voiced concern over the damage inflicted to this great Islamic city.

All across the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsular, Qat is the drug of choice. It's chewed by mostly men from all levels of society including the countries president. This mild alkaloid is a stimulant and is chewed constantly, gradually forming a somewhat large and unattractive wad in one cheek. It is taken with a little water and every afternoon is the catalyst for men gathering socially for ‘Qat sessions’. Travelling across Yemen, our driver, like every one else was eager to source the best quality product whether it be from kids on the roadside or large markets dedicated to selling the plant. It has supplanted many traditional crops and is very water ‘hungry'. #qat #drug #stimulant #tradition #yemen #arabianpeninsular #travel #photography #travelphotography #travelphotographer #traveldeeper

Discovering tiny alley ways and old blue doors on the way to the honey souk. Yemeni honey is said to be the best, sadly we are unable to visit Yemen so honey from the Saudi mountains is the next best thing!

Exploring Jeddah (before Ramadan) in the early hours before the heat became too much. Unfortunately, too early to grab coffee @meddcoffee almost opp where we are sitting. This group of Indonesian pilgrims were delightful and @mr_aljabry whom, I have to say, is one of the most patient men ever. Thank you Ahmed!
