Did you know Utzon designed a filling station in Herning?
In 1962, Jørn Utzon bought a Jaguar. Back then, petrol made the engine roar. The rest is history, as the familiar saying goes, and, today, electricity is the future. But, while technology is constantly changing, some design stand the test of time. They continue to speak to us and become classics. For example, the cars by Jaguar. And Utzon’s work.
Now, Jaguar and Utzon Center have teamed up to answer — where is it we find good architecture today? Jørn Utzon worked all of his life to understand this question, even while working on something as mundane as this station from 1986. It is not his most spectacular work, nor as important as his @sydneyoperahouse. But even here, you see his masterly traits: The floating roof structure, the exposed concrete or the insuppresible drive to elevate something as overlooked as a petrol station.
Visit the station next time you are in Herning. Look up. Notice the detailing. Sense Utzon.
The next few months, you can follow Jaguar and Utzon Center from the electric car on our tour through Denmark, where we visit Jørn Utzon’s buildings and find examples on good architecture.
