***The Dream Diary***, ongoing project. This 2017 painting “Insomnia” is taken from my Impossible Animals project, which can be viewed below. I painted this in the middle of the night. As a teenager I experienced frequent sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming episodes, making sleep difficult/weird. Even now, once woken, I have a difficult time getting back to sleep. I envy easy sleepers.

The Impossible Animals Project 2017.

The painting directly before this (“The Last of the Animal Hybrids”) was my 700th lifetime artwork and also the final work in my chimeric series of 200 animals (artbook publishers, feel free to contact me). Back when I had painted my 499th lifetime artwork in early 2017, I was intending to take a 6-month break to do a Bayeux-esque tapestry of Trump's criminal entanglement with Manafort dating back to the 1970s. I only managed 3 panels: too much data. Probably deriving in part from internalising the political chaos in both my nations during 2016 and 2017, I instead tumbled down a weird tangent – a trippy, crazy ride through evolutionary history – and I compulsively created 200 human-animal chimeras, once even considering continuing on with fungi, plant-, bacteria-, virus- and archaea-chimeras, too, working my way through their various species as well. It is likely that the Impossible Animals project offered me not just a coping mechanism but also perspective – “see, other animals have wonderful histories and yet often go extinct”, or (less cynically), “see, humans might make it, too”. But I have a stopping point in terms of thematic adventures and, as I take more pleasure from playfulness than completism, I look forward to painting freely rather than prescriptively again, although it's been an interesting journey. Regardless, you’ll have seen that I indulged myself with a few fungal-, plant- and even machinic-chimeras. Thank all of you for being with me on this excursion, all of which was originally posted in real time.
All animals, including us, are related through evolution to all these other forms of life through a common ancestor, LUCA. Evolution is a beautiful thing.

199 “Ivanov” 2017
(speculatively) early 20th-century-? (humanzee)/(at least) 1859 CE-present (zonkey)/1986 CE-present (savannah cat). Humanzee speculative, zonkey and savannah cat extant. Humanzee: Homo sapiens sapiens x Pan troglodytes/paniscus/ Zonkey: Equus quagga x Equus africanus asinus/Savannah cat: Leptailurus serval (serval) x Felis silvestris catus (domestic cat). Girl humanzee flanked by two additional hybrids: a baby zonkey and a savannah kitten. Hominins and ancient chimpanzees diverged from a common ancestor only 5.5 to 6 million years ago, which begs some interesting questions. Biologists truly don't know if humans and chimpanzees can interbreed. The only serious attempt was by Soviet scientist Ilya Ivanovitch Ivanov in 1929, and he used orangutans, which likely would be too far away from humans to successfully interbreed with (Ivanov did "create" a zonkey [zebra-donkey] hybrid, however). There also were rumours of a successful Chinese pregnancy of a chimpanzee female, though she and her offspring were killed before it came to term. There also was a verified American experiment with gibbon (small ape) embryos in a test tube in 1977, which did fertilise, but those embryos also were destroyed after a few days. My undergraduate professor Bill Workman at University of Alaska once called the idea of chimp-human interbreeding "the most interesting and most damnable experiment imaginable" and I have to say I agree. Needless to say, such experiments are forbidden under ethics laws. Good to remember that after humans and chimpanzees separated from each other evolutionarily 5.5-6 million years ago, we then kept on interbreeding with each other for at least another million years, and probably until 4 million years ago. Oh yes, recent DNA studies tell us uncomfortable facts like those.

198 “Pizzly: Grass Ain't Greener (Ligers and Tigons and Pizzlies, Oh My: II” 2017
2006 CE-present. Extant. Pizzly (grolar bear): Ursus maritimus (polar bear) x Ursus arctos (North American brown bear). Parsimoniously first discovered in 2006 (with an unconfirmed claim from 1864, as well), the real-life hybrid known as the pizzly is a result of two different "species" called polar bears and brown bears interbreeding to produce offspring. The underlying reason is tragic in environmental terms, as it is due to the polar bear's Arctic habitat being destroyed by humans as a result of global warming (as a result of oil use), and so the polar bear – as a rather adaptive animal – now is encroaching on grizzly bear territory, sometimes to mate. I am made ill by global warming deniers. I wish I could show people directly the difference in central Alaskan climate between what I grew up with and how it is now.

197 “Good Cama” 2017
1998 CE-present. Extant. Cama: Lama glama (llama) x Camelus dromedaries (dromedary). Camas are real-life hybrids, where male dromedaries and female llamas interbreed to produce offspring. Camas were recently created via artificial insemination in Dubai in 1998, but as I always say, evolution doesn't care how it's done – it's done and that's it. (In all seriousness, though, evolution has no agency.) Even human artificial reproduction is as "adaptive" as human "natural" reproduction, evolutionarily speaking, as it is, in the end, two gametes joining and new emergent properties resulting from the zygote. All ancestral camelids evolved in the Americas, and llamas and camels diverged 11 million years ago when the ancestor to camels went west over the Bering land bridge of my home state. This reproductive ability between a llama and a camel is food for thought when you consider that hominins and ancient chimpanzees only diverged from a common ancestor 5.5 to 6 million years ago, which begs some interesting questions, doesn't it, which the penultimate painting in this series shall address.
P.S. I think I subconsciously gave this cama Ancient Egyptian-makeup eyes à la Nefertiti or King Tut. Though like camels and llamas (and deer and moose and cows), camas have strikingly beautiful eyes even before the application of kohl.

196 “A Violent Trap” 2017
1981 CE-present. Extant. Wholphin: Tursiops truncates (common bottlenose dolphin) x Pseudorca crassidens (false killer whale). With the first recorded wholphin recorded in 1981, wholphins are real-life hybrids where bottlenose dolphins and false killer whales (a different type of dolphin) interbreed to produce offspring. Dolphins, porpoises and whales (the cetaceans) are highly intelligent, have cumulative culture, modify tools, use recreational drugs, exhibit empathy, grieving behaviour, creativity and theory of mind, just as many social animals do (okay, anyway, at least apes, corvids, some parrots, elephants, possibly wolves/dogs/pigeons do). Cetaceans also may show suicidal behaviour, aka beachings, aka cetacean strandings. The "violent trap" of this artwork's title partially references this phenomenon, but also references the cruelty of enslaving intelligent and self- aware beings for human entertainment purposes. Though self-harm is a controversial interpretation of beachings, mental health difficulties are not necessarily surprising in emotional, highly intelligent, empathetic beings. Non-human psychopathology is a relatively new field, but psychological disorders that are directly comparable to those of humans such as depression, obsessive- compulsive disorder, addictions and post-traumatic stress disorder exist in many animals.

195 “Tigon (Ligers and Tigons and Pizzlies, Oh My: I” 2017
1943 CE-present. Extant. Tigon: Panthera leo (lion) female x Panthera tigris (tiger) male.
The tigon is a real-life male-tiger/female-lion hybrid, where the two different "species" called tigers and lions interbreed to produce offspring. Here in this painting the offspring is male and so fertility possibility lessens, as with all male hybrid offspring. Tigons and ligers (directly above) are “essentially” the same animal, except in the case of the liger it is theorised that the growth-inhibitory genetic mechanisms are not fully activated during the growing years.

194 “Liger (Ligers and Tigons and Pizzlies, Oh My: III” 2017
1798 CE-present. Extant. Liger: Panthera tigris (tiger) female x Panthera leo (lion) male.

The liger is a real-life female-tiger/male-lion hybrid, where the two different "species" called tigers and lions interbreed to produce offspring. Made famous by the film Napoleon Dynamite, the liger grows bigger than either parent species, and indeed is the biggest cat type on the planet. The first reference to a liger was in 1798.

193 “Crescent Moon over Cattalo” 2017
1749 CE-present. Extant. Cattalo: Bos taurus (cattle, cow) x Bison bison (American bison, bison, buffalo, Tatanka).
First recorded in 1749, the cattalo, also called a beefalo or a bison hybrid, is a real-life hybrid, where the two different "species" called buffalo (American bison) and cow interbreed to produce offspring. Buffalo nearly went extinct in the 19th century, and underwent a bottleneck of under 600 individuals and so their genetic diversity is low. Bottlenecks have happened to humans too at several points in the prehistory of Homo sapiens sapiens, though nothing this extreme. It is happening to gorillas at this moment, and debates rage over whether corridors should be opened in the wilderness to allow gorillas to hybridise and thus "taint" other so-called pure sub-species. The alternative may mean allowing gorillas to become extinct. Personally, I find it deeply shameful that we potentially would doom a wild great ape to extinction due to species essentialism. Even with introgression, cattalo hybrids have low genetic diversity and this makes them vulnerable, but at least it gives the older species a fighting chance.

3,500 ya-present. Extant. Homo sapiens sapiens (humans) x machine.

Cyborgs (human-machine chimeras) have existed from at least Ancient Egypt onwards if we include prosthetics, for a functioning prosthetic toe was recently found on an Egyptian mummy. War manufacturers currently produce cybernetic insects, as do science educators. Female cyborgs are cinematically prescriptive, even in so-called feminist representations, cf. painting title.

190 “Mary Had a Little Geep” 2017
(speculatively) 10,000 ya-present. Extant. Geep (shoat): Capra aegagrus hircus (goat) x Ovis aries (sheep).
Real-life goat-sheep hybrids are found in nature, where the two different "species" called goats and sheep interbreed to produce fertile offspring. "Species" is an essentialised tool we apply to observed nature based on prototypes – "pure types" that honestly do not exist except in idealised (and therefore unreal) abstractions. Sheep were domesticated 10,500ya and goats 10,000ya — there likely have been some hybrids right from the get-go.

188 “Homo sapiens sapiens” 2017

ca. 300,000 ya-present. Extant (at the time of press). Human: Homo sapiens sapiens (modern human) x Homo sapiens neanderthalensis (Neanderthal); Homo sapiens sapiens (modern human) x Homo sapiens ssp. Denisova (Denisova hominin); Homo sapiens sapiens (modern human) x mystery hominin; (speculatively) Homo sapiens sapiens (modern human) x Homo erectus; Homo and/or Australopithecus (hominin) x Pan troglodytes (chimpanzee). Modern humans are a real-life hybrid, where multiple different "species" called Homo sapiens (sapiens) and Homo sapiens neanderthalensis and the Denisovans interbred to produce offspring. Modern humans originated in Africa, but along the way we interbred with other hominins. All Asians, Native Americans and Europeans are part Neanderthal (Africans, the "purest" Homo sapiens, have a slight amount), and East Asians and Native Americans also are part Denisovan along with a mystery, undiscovered hominin. (Or at least I am, according to a programme I used to process my mother’s raw DNA results to compare with Denisovan sequences, likely due to trace Native American admixture reported by 23andme.) That's all in addition to potential Homo erectus admixture (and chimpanzee admixture from 4 million years ago). Good times for all (let us hope).

(speculatively) 2 mya-present (bonobo-chimpanzee hybrid)/(at least) 1999 CE-present (rheboon). Both extant. Bonobo-chimpanzee hybrid: Pan paniscus (bonobo) x Pan troglodytes (common chimpanzee)/Rheboon: Macaca mulatta (rhesus macaque) x Papio hamadryas (hamadryas baboon). Bonobo-chimpanzee hybrids exist both in captivity and in nature (wild chimpanzee admixture was found to contain bonobo admixture, too). Bonobos and chimps diverged 2 million years ago, and occasionally have interbred since, now most often in captivity because their “territories” finally overlap which – separated by the Congo River – almost never occurs in the wild, though apparently it must have at least once. Yes, the contemplative rheboon shown here exists in real life, too.

We now enter the final 14 paintings and the realm of the POSSIBLE CHIMERAS. Unlike the preceding 186 paintings, these animal chimeras actually exist.
“Species” is an artificial concept similar to a “week”, that allows us to (try to) organise how we experience nature, just as “weeks” and “minutes” allow us to try to organise how we experience time.
Biologist Ernst Mayr developed the biological species concept, where basically if you can interbreed and have fertile offspring, you’re the same species. The BSC is — leaving aside Mayrs’ implicit prototypes of “true” species, as in my opinion “true” species do not exist either — the concept I use, as I consider multiple divisions into separate but interbreeding species-populations etc. even more needlessly essentialist than the BSC in terms of how we categorise. But I always try to remind myself that “species” (genus, order, etc.) is only a TOOL.
That said, “species” has messy implications regarding modern humans (we interbred with other hominins [& for 1.5 million years, after we diverged, with chimpanzees]) — and regarding multiple other organisms. (Some essentialise the words “hybrid” [possible between populations/species etc. depending on how each is defined] and “chimera” [impossible unless artificial; again problematic, as nothing extant is artificial]: I do not, and use them interchangeably.)
Meet the true chimeras...

“Contemptuous Furniture” 2018. (etching).
Just thought I’d throw in an extra artwork I did yesterday that is not in the “Impossible Animals” book at all, but is still an especially impossible chimera so might as well have been included in this section. Usually women are portrayed as furniture pieces and not males & that motif has been historically highlighted in modern sculpture and on multiple fetish sites, but frankly most people regardless of gender resent (too mild of a verb) genuine dehumanization. I think of this fellow as “fighting back”: contempt goes both ways.

186 “Nephilim” 2017
ca. 2600 ya (first literary reference in the Hebrew Pentateuch). Probably not extant in a materialist sense, nor ever has been. Nephilim (human-angel hybrid).
Human-angel chimera. I wish to state – for the record – that I do not believe in angels but that I am interested in folkloric allusions to hybridity, such as this biblical reference to a demigod situation, where the sons of God lie with the daughters of men. Nephilim, in summary, are basically considered to be gigantic hybrid human-angels. The enthusiastic preacher-supporter of the Salem Witch Trials known as Cotton Mather not only was very pursuant in plant hybridisation studies (140 years before Moravian monk Gregor Mendel proposed actual mechanisms to explain what we now call genetics), but Cotton Mather also claimed to have found the fossilised ancient remains of hybrids, a.k.a. pre-Flood Nephilim, though these New York discoveries later turned out to be mastodon bones.

184 “Gymnosperm” 2017
(at least) 4613-4494 ya (first Egyptian depiction of vegetative-linked green god of the underworld, Osiris). Probably not extant in a materialist sense. Human-plant hybrid (green man [sometimes woman], a.k.a. Osiris, John Barleycorn, Holly King, Oak King, Lud, Green Knight, Viridios, Green George, Father Christmas, Derg Corra, Merlin, Amoghasiddhi, Jack o'Lantern, Pangu, May King, May Queen, Peter Pan, al-Khidr, Jack-in-the-Green, Daphne, Narcissus, dryad, Jack Frost, Leshy, Cyparissus, Sinuus, straw bear, etc.).
Gymnosperm, literally the “naked seed”. Like the naked but hairy man, the human-plant hybrid is found cross-culturally. In Europe, he’s most well known as the Green Man, and is related in folkloric terms to hairy-man goat-human chimeras such as Pan and woodwoses. What both hairy man and human-plantish person have in common is direct connection to matters uncontrolled and wild. There have been human-plant symbolic marriages in many cultures, as collected in tales by folklorist/anthropologist Sir James Frazer. Like non-human animals, plants have been used as proxy humans, e.g. trees nailed to promote healing in humans as the wounded tree itself emits sap and then heals.
This piece is too an illustration for a novel I finished writing during this same time period called “The Stagtress”, which features the Green Man, a human-plant (and sometimes human-goat) hybrid, to be published by Fugue State Press in Autumn 2018. There are here also medieval “vegetable lambs”, a.k.a. borametzes: theorised to grow from stalks, while their meat tastes of honey.
"His vegetable head like a true jack o’ lantern, scooped out with a candle inside, eyes glittering, but she just saw him for the turnip he was. His fingers were leaves, his subtle lips were petals..." (from “The Stagtress”)

Human-rose chimera. Extremely unlikely, but we’ll see. A sweet male growing roses. The last common ancestor of humans and plants is unknown, but it likely lived ca. 1.6 billion years ago. Leccinum insigne (Aspen Scaber, toadstool), Gomphus floccosus (scaly chanterelle), Crucibulum laeve (bird's nest fungus), Amanita muscaria (fly agaric, toadstool).
Chimeric fungi hold their many tongues on the subject of animals. Four fungi shown here: the scaly chanterelle from Oregon; and the Aspen Scaber, bird’s nest fungus and Amanita muscaria from Alaska (theorised to be the ancestral home for all Amanitas). We last shared a mutual common ancestor with the fungi in Diplotheca, ca. 965 million years ago (see painting far below in feed), although some theorists such as Dr. Mark Sircus have controversially postulated that human cancer cells are a form of chimeric fungi. This is thought unlikely, and so the human-fungi hybrid is placed in this section, though there are surprises up ahead in the Possible Chimeras section.

I intensely painted 200 human-animal chimera works from July-December 2016, and with 181 already posted, we are inchworming towards the conclusion as we now greet ESPECIALLY IMPOSSIBLE CHIMERAS. All previous 181 are in chronological order, if you wish to delve back into the mists of time. Anthropomorphism was a cardinal sin back when I was an undergraduate anthropology student, a discipline that tends to emphasise, unsurprisingly, human uniqueness. I accepted then that to think of other animals as having "human" qualities was misguided (and perhaps even disrespectful of the non-human animal's unique point of view). Later studying biological (physical) anthropology and understanding Darwinian gradualism at a deeper level, I realised that denying other animals "human" capacities is not only often unscientific (gradualism in closely related species as per shared ancestors and thus shared behaviour as part of morphology; convergent behaviour/morphology in distantly related species in similar environments), but it at times even may function as a gate-keeping device that strictly divides cultural concepts of "human" and "animal", and can lead to privileging the human animal over all others. Perhaps surprisingly – at least to social anthropologists, who like to think of themselves as relativistic – in this case it was the scientific applications of biological anthropology rather than social anthropology that proved more open-minded. I'm not saying that extinct Californian ground sloths go around smoking cigarettes (to take one example from this bestiary), but I am saying that compulsive behaviours (including maladaptive ones perhaps the equivalent to smoking addictions), "free will", and certainly complex emotions will be found in many non-human animals. It makes evolutionary sense.
We are part of nature, no better or worse than a nematode worm. We are all possible animals.
I hope to begin sending “Impossible Animals” off to art book publishers soon. #artbook #artbookpublishing #sciencebooks #scienceart #illustratedbooks #paintings #surrealist #contemporaryart #evolution #emergingartist #visionaryart #gallery #artagent #curators #collectors #fine

179 “The Magicians” 2017
7,000 ya-present. Extant. Cavia porcellus (guinea pig, cavy).
Dedicated to the memory of Machu Pigchu and Julio Piglesias. My ex was allergic to dogs and I to cats, so guinea pigs it was. I loved having guinea pigs. Machu and Julio purred adorably and "popcorned", kicking high into the air when excited, alongside making "wheek-wheek-wheek" noises when food was imminent, amongst many other vocalisations. Our guinea pigs were highly spoiled and my ex built a six-foot open-plan enclosure for them in the living room (cleaned regularly). Like humans, guinea pigs are extremely social and should never be housed solitarily. Ours was a loving and very bonded male couple. Wikipedia plays down guinea pig same-sex sexual behaviour as "dominance simulations", but this is typical for explaining away same-sex animal behaviour and had to have been written by someone with little evolutionary understanding of bisexual animal behaviour, which is common in most social animals, including humans and non-human apes, dolphins, birds etc., and likely evolutionarily selected due to the long-term advantages of reciprocal altruism. If interested further, I recommend RC Kirkpatrick’s 2000 article “The Evolution of Homosexual Behaviour” & the books “Homosexual Behaviour in Animals: An Evolutionary Perspective” by Volker Sommer (my PhD supervisor!) and Paul Vasey; and “Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity” by Bruce Bagemihl.

178 “Good Understanding of Derived Traits” 2017
ca. 8,000 ya-present. Extant. Gallus gallus domesticus (chicken).
Saint-chicken-chimera. Chickens show Machiavellian intelligence, with males making food calls to attract females for mating purposes, even when no food is around. They also show empathetic reactions, and their cognitive abilities in general may be as high as that of other birds, as well as mammals (cf. Marino 2017). We tend to think they’re stupid, likely due to the fact that we eat them and therefore resort to objectification to mitigate our guilt (Ibid.).

173 “The Last of the Really Great Dog-Whangdoodles” 2017
(speculatively) 30,000-14,700 ya-present. Extant. Canis lupus familiaris (dog).
This title referencing a saintly dog-chimera is a little random and I honestly cannot remember why I named it that. There was a chimeric character in a children’s novel I liked growing up called The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles by actress Julie Andrews and I suppose I was referring to the eponymous whangdoodle’s monstrous qualities (I was highly attracted to chimeric monsters even as a smaller child – picturebook favourites included William Stieg’s The Bad Island a.k.a. Rotten Island, a “rotten, horrible, awful, burning hot, freezing-cold and rocky island” where all the monsters killed each other upon the sight of a beautiful flower; as well as the creepy chimeras found in Babar and Zephir). Whangdoodles seem to have been first described in a satirical sermon by William P. Brannon in 1858 (“where the lion roareth and the whangdoodle mourneth for her first-born”); later by Roald Dahl in James and the Giant Peach [1961] as looking like centipedes; and finally in Andrews’ 1974 novel as (I cite Lady Wikipedia here) “an intelligent, ungulate-like character capable of changing colour to suit its emotions, from whose hind legs grow a new and different set of bedroom slippers each year”). To be honest, I look at this art piece now and I don’t see a whangdoodle; since @inkyfilm mentioned it, I only can see Sigmund Freud’s face on a dog’s body. God knows what Sigmund would say about that.

172 “I Have a Suggestion” 2017
(speculatively) 30,000-14,700 ya-present. Extant. Canis lupus familiaris (dog).
Dedicated to dogs I have loved: Sassy, Paisley, Pita, Gracie. This Strasbourg dog-angel-chimera is suggesting that we treat our co-animals a little more kindly. The dog was the first animal to be domesticated and is perhaps our best-loved co-animal, prehistorically and historically (cat people would disagree, I am sure). Dogs and humans are symbiotically co-evolved, the way our lactobacilli in our guts and vaginas protect against more harmful forms of bacteria: in symbiosis, both dogs and humans benefit from the relationship. All dogs genetically are wolves, and the extant sub-species of “wolf” and “dog” are inter-fertile (as taxonomically indicated above).

“Impossible Animals”.
I painted one early chimera in March 2017 (“Death, Famine, War, Conquest”), and then did the remaining 199 paintings during a very intense 5-month period from early July to early December 2017, whilst living in an isolated forest in rural Germany, teaching evolutionary theory and Enlightenment-based critical theory to Balkan bankers, painting feverishly sometimes two or three works a night.
It needs mentioning that the chimeric animals presented here are by no means exhaustive. These are only 200 paintings and over five billion species have existed on our planet, 99% of which have gone extinct. I picked the animals I wanted to portray in a very Jungian fashion, guided towards what felt “right” for me. I have yet to tabulate the ratios, and I may never do so, but I am fairly confident that like any animal I operate under Hamiltonian kin selection biases, and privilege my own closest relatives first (apes, primates, mammals). And also perhaps my biases extend even towards a type of Alaska-centrism (in terms of the animals I grew up with), along with a bias towards living animals. Subconsciously, I chimerised some animals more than once, sometimes from opposite angles (a dog head with a human body, and then vice versa): dogs, horses, lions, deer, peacocks, etc. (including, more surprisingly, multiple cows, snails and earthworms).
Biologically speaking, the chimeric artworks shown here – though not those in the Possible Chimeras section – are impossible. We do not see blue human heads on Sinotubulites, or pouting human lips on liver flukes. Yet I have chosen to imagine and then emphasise our links with our co-animals, however impossibly. Imagination is something that we likely share with multiple other organisms – certainly with long-lived social animals such as the non-human great apes, cetaceans, corvids, but possibly too with other organisms in whom we deem such capacities impossible. I posit that we have more in common than we do not. #artbook #artbookpublishing #sciencebooks #scienceart #illustratedbooks #paintings #surrealist #prehistoric #evolution #emergingartist #visionaryart #gallery #artagent #curators #collectors #fineart

168 “Cold Feet” 2017
130,000-110,000 ya-present. Extant. Ursus maritimus (polar bear).
Polar bear-human chimera. It's grim, but a lot of my childhood friends' homes had polar bear rugs, which was common enough in 1970s/1980s central Alaska when I was a kid. I never liked the stiff feeling of the yellowed fur, nor the glass eyeballs and fake plastic noses (the heads were taxidermied and still attached). Nanuq (polar bear) is actually a word that I remember my (white) parents, and maybe other people, using when I was very young. I was born in Utqiaġvik (formerly known as Barrow), and was initially raised in the Iñupiat village of Wainwright (Ulġuniq). My parents were full-time teachers and so I was babysat as an infant and toddler during the daytime, though fortunately my mother worked close by and was able to nurse me. Before I turned two, we moved from Wainwright first to Anchorage for a year or so and then to the south-central Kenai Peninsula where I grew up (where the parents of other white children owned the polar bear rugs), but there remain fragments in my memory from Wainwright. I remember living in another place before Anchorage, for example, and I also remember some other specifics, including possibly some other words. Sometimes I think I would like to learn Iñupiatun and might find it easy to do so, because linguists say early exposure to a language gets embedded in your head, and in the early 1970s my day-time babysitter spoke to me in Iñupiatun, as I suppose did most others other than my own parents for those first couple of years or so. All my baby pictures are from this stark, beautiful place, which I'm sure must be so different now.

(Der Agitator)The Rabble Rouser, 1928
(This painting knocked my socks off, both the message, not unlike today, and the artistry). “Cornelis Baard, director of the Stedelijk, purchased this work in 1929. It was the first painting by a living international artist to be added to the collection of the Stedelijk, and an ominous portent of the horrors to come. The painting shows a rabble rousing Nazi sympathizer encircled by a grinning crowd. A swastika embellishes his tie, and an Iron Cross and a heart in the colors of red, white, and black - the colors of the German Empire - are pinned to his chest, attributes with which this rabble rouser evokes his status as a veteran of the First World War”.

Horse-chimera. Although the horse was domesticated only 5,600 years ago and the horse as we roughly know it today evolved around one million years ago, non-modern horse ancestors stretch back to 50 million years ago. I painted this in the middle of the night. As a teenager I experienced frequent sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming episodes, making sleep difficult/weird. Rembrandt van Rijn
Portrait of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit, 1634
Exquisitely painted, recently restored!
“[The] High Society [exhibition] celebrates the acquisition of Rembrandt’s spectacular wedding portraits of Marten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit by the Netherlands (Rijksmuseum) and by France (Musée du Louvre) in 2016, from a private collection. Following the completion of restoration work in early 2018, this is the first time the public will see these paintings in their full glory. The High Society exhibition is the prelude to the Year of Rembrandt in 2019, when the 350th anniversary of this great artist’s death will be extensively commemorated”.
