Brian Donnelly, known professionally as KAWS, is an American artist and designer. His work includes repeated use of a cast of figurative characters and motifs, some dating back to the beginning of his career, initially painted in 2D and later realised in 3D. Some of his characters are his own creations while others are reworked versions of existing icons.
While living in Jersey City, KAWS began his career as a graffiti artist. By the early 1990s he moved to New York City and began to work focus on subverting the images on bus shelters, phone booth advertisements, and billboards. Soon after his notoriety and popularity reached heights never before expected and these ads became increasingly sought after by the public.
In the late 1990s, KAWS had an opportunity to design and produce limited edition vinyl toys. These toys instantly became a hit with the global art toy-collecting community, especially in Japan. Kaws' toys and sculptures range in size from a few inches to ten metres tall, and are made from various materials including fiberglass, aluminium, wood, bronze and a steel pontoon inflatable raft. Besides these he has also collaborated commercially on clothing, skate decks and other products.
His work is exhibited in galleries and museums, held in the permanent collections of public institutions, and avidly collected by individuals including music producer #therealswizzz , internet sensation #pewdiepie and rapper #pharrell .

After successfully launching his own fashion label, Original Fake, in the early 2000s, KAWS began working with a number of cult streetwear labels, including Bathing Ape and Supreme. In 2008 he designed the cover for #kanyewest much feted album ‘808s & Heartbreak’, and more recently he has developed his own pair of #nike Air Jordans.
