💿 “SYR: Goodbye 20th Century” by Sonic Youth + Others 💿
Sonic Youth has a multitude of albums in their collection. A while back I wrote a post profiling one of their more obscure experimental releases expressing my love towards it. This album is going to be yet another one of those posts. Over the years, the band released a series of albums called SYR in which they cover various modern- classical and avant- garde pieces by composers they respected such as Yoko Ono and John Cage. For this installation, Sonic Youth teamed up with a bunch of other New York avant- garde musicians including Jim O’Rourke, Takehisa Kosugi, Christian Marclay, and Coco Hayley Moore (Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore’s daughter). The music is far from their usual noise rock style and may throw off the casual listener of the band. Like any great experimental piece, the material on this record is challenging and will make you question your perception of music. But it’s records like these that make me respect the band as it shows their appreciation for the art of music within their scene. Many bands stick to one sound whether it be for sales or maintaining a fan base (or both). But a band like Sonic Youth completely rejects that notion doing whatever they feel inspired to do and for that I applaud them. I recommend you take some time to explore the band’s obscure releases a bit as they will really open your eyes to how prolific they were as musicians.
