pretty accurate representation of how the last few weeks have been.
I lead myself through a traditional Ayurvedic cleanse in early Nov and tho I’ve resumed my normal diet I’m still feeling the effects. It’s astounding how just a few days of actual “cleansing” can have such a huge impact on my mind and body.
.
Ayurveda takes a really different approach to cleansing than most modern fad cleanses and diets. I think when most folks think of “cleansing” they envision restrictive eating, stripping things away, and shedding weight. The whole atmosphere around cleansing reinforces “my body is my enemy” and “I need to lose this to gain that” ... and I’m just not down with that.

What makes Ayurvedic cleansing different?
• the emphasis is on nourishing the body and minimizing sensory input - more rest, breath and ease; less stress, hustle and strain
• a simple yet nourishing (keep coming back to that word but just giving you the facts!) diet is followed. Meals revolve around foods that are easy to digest so that the body spends less energy on physical digestion and more on drawing lodged impurities, or ama, to the digestive tract to be excreted out of the body
• rather than stripping the microbiome with extreme supplements, hard-to-digest, and/or nutritionally-empty foods, which will leave the body weak and depleted, Ayurvedic cleansing strengthens digestion and can help your gut process and assimilate food better AND ward off illness and further production of ama. We’re only as healthy as our digestion!
• drinking ghee and daily abhyanga, or self-massage, aid in the process of dislodging impurity from the tissues and bringing them to the gut for excretion. If you’ve never made the time to massage your body with warm sesame oil for several days in a row it is h e a v e n I’m pretty sure.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:: HEALTHY-ISH CHOCOLATE MOUSSE
Ingredients:
2 cups unsweetened greek yogurt (I use non-dairy yogurt)
½ cup almond butter
6 oz dark chocolate, melted
1 tsp coconut oil
4 tbsp maple syrup
½ tsp vanilla extract
Topping:
½ can coconut cream, chilled
Chopped nuts of choice
Cocoa nibs
Instructions:
1. Combine dark chocolate and coconut oil and heat gradually over medium heat or in intervals in the microwave until completely melted. Allow to cool slightly.
2. In a separate bowl, whisk yogurt and nut butter until smooth.
3. Fold the melted chocolate into the yogurt mix using a spatula. Add vanilla and maple syrup.
4. Spoon chocolate mousse into 2 serving cups.
5. For coconut whip: In a bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, whisk chilled coconut cream until smooth. Add a splash of maple syrup if desired.
6. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Assemble: Spoon the chocolate mousse into 2 servings cups, top with a dollop of whipped coconut cream. Sprinkle with chopped nuts, cocoa nibs or your preferred topping.

Let’s talk more about Thanksgiving strategies. Specifically, managing your hunger.⁣

When we wait until we are truly hungry to eat, our bodies respond. It’s a whole thing- seeing the food, smelling the food, mouths watering with anticipation, creating the juices that will break our food down for us....our bodies are preparing to do the job that takes the biggest part of their energy. One of my teachers @joyfulbelly used to say that hunger is the best sauce and he’s so right. ⁣

So, when we eat between meals, or out of boredom or stress, our bodies aren’t ready to do that work....and if they aren’t ready to break the food down properly, it can add to digestive woes. If we are eating for other reasons than true hunger, we may not get the messages our bodies send to tell us we are full, either.⁣

I used to feel like I needed a snack before a big meal to take the edge off, like I couldn’t trust my body and was going to toss tables, eating everything in sight. Hulk style. I have learned that waiting until my body is ready for a meal works way better for me!⁣

🥘 If your body is still digesting the previous meal (to be blunt, you’re burping it up), wait.⁣
😞If you are reaching for food out of boredom or stress, interrupt the habit. Take a walk or make some tea. Call a friend.⁣
🥬No guilt! Listen, if the above is the opposite of what you have done your whole life, give yourself a break. Baby steps.⁣
