BITTER TASTE:

The bitter taste is the most underutilized and underappreciated taste in our modern culture. I have to say that I kind of understand. As a kid, the idea of green foods was repulsive to me. I wasn’t exposed to it enough so the flavor was off-putting to me. 🥗
I didn’t give my 1st child greens and bitters at all when she was a baby. She doesn’t care for it. My 2nd and 3rd got just about every vegetable I could get my hands on in their diet from a young age. Their taste buds are much more expanded. Bitter taste is a natural part of the flavor spectrum to them.

Bitter taste is one of the most valuable tastes for healthy, strong digestion. Bitter taste stimulates peristalsis. It is extremely supportive of elimination. Bitter taste also increases metabolism and encourages the release of bile which aids in fat digestion and clears the blood of excess heat.

Basil is used in both its fresh and dried forms. Sweet basil is the type most commonly used in cooking; it is balancing for Vata and Kapha, as well as for Pitta when used in lesser quantities. It is a warming herb, and contributes the sweet, bitter and pungent tastes. Holy basil is more therapeutic and is used in many Maharishi Ayurveda herbal products. This variety balances Vata and Kapha but increases Pitta. Basil and holy basil are used in ayurveda to maintain and promote the long-term health of the respiratory tract. Basil tea can help clear shleshma from the lungs and the respiratory area. It is also used to settle stomach disorders and to enhance digestion. A mild natural sleep aid, basil enhances the quality of sleep. Oil of basil promotes mental clarity and is frequently a part of stimulating, Kapha-balancing aroma oil blends. A holy basil plant grown in your home is said to keep it free of garavisha — environmental toxins.
Dried basil is aromatic and is used to flavor soups and stews. It is potent, so use small quantities for a more subtle flavor. The dried leaves can be combined with lemon juice, powdered dry roasted cumin, black pepperand a little salt to make a dressing for a salad using cooked beans or vegetables.#tulsi#basil

SALTY TASTE/RASA:
My husband has a salt phobia. Like sugar..many of us have a phobia of salt because restaurant and processed foods are SO overly salted and the salt used is cheap, unhealthy table salt. 🧂
That said, mineral salt...like the other 5 tastes/rasas has its place in our diet (in moderation). SALTY taste stimulates secretions. It is a laxative. It improves and enhances the taste of food. When food tastes better, we digest it better. In the summer when we sweat more, we lose electrolytes and need to retain more water. Salt helps with this balance. Our need for salt varies depending on our constitution and time of the year. 🧂
I’ve been adding salt and lime to my water in the winter to help my dry body retain more water which enhances my digestion. 🧂
Learning how each taste fits into my diet has been eye opening. It has been a valuable lesson that all tastes have a place in our diet as long as we know ourselves and how it fits into our daily diet. 🧂
Even Just a sprinkle of mineral salt over vegetables can significantly enhance their enjoyment and provide digestive support. Don’t be afraid of salt! Many of us need it more then we realize.

I finally got around to making the @medicalmedium liver smoothie @aokmd. 😀

The liver is a vital organ for keeping us in optimal health. It detoxifies our blood, stores and releases bile which breaks up fat we consume, and is a main support system for overall health. We must take care of our liver!! 🥤
This smoothie is delicious!!

It contains dragon fruit, wild blueberries, frozen mangoes and banana and water. 🥤
Red, blue, yellow and orange foods are high in beta carotene and restore the liver and build good blood. And as I’ve mentioned...good strong blood builds great digestion which leads to great health. 🥤
The only problem with this smoothie is it’s really tasty and It’s gone too fast!

Wheat intolerance and “gluten free” have become popular topics. More people are recognizing that wheat doesn’t make them feel great. 🥧

Wheat intolerance will show up in the body as digestive discomfort (gas, bloating, constipation, burping). This is different and obviously better then a wheat allergy. In a wheat allergy the immune system attacks the ingested wheat and results in internal inflammation and potential damage to the intestines. 🍩

There are SO many substitutes that satisfy the same cravings. Oats and oat flour are my favorite sub and my kids LOVE the baked goods, waffles, pancakes we make with oats. 🍮

Oats are sweet and heavy and therefore nourishing and satisfying. But they are also EASY to digest. The exact opposite of wheat which is DIFFICULT to digest. 🍪

If you notice your kids have digestive issues...wheat could be playing a role. They can have their cake and eat it too with minor ingredient tweaks! 🍰

If I could eat curry every day... Its possible I would.
This curry has a combination of veggies and pungent, digestive spices. 🌶
It is also EASY to digest, yet full of nutrients and anti inflammatory flavorings.

Assam diary || Aloo parathas: Flatbread stuffed with a spicy potato mix, often served with a ‘chatni’ - freshly ground herbs. One of the typical breakfasts that brings together the entire India on a plate, something which is enjoyed by people from each and every state of this large and diverse nation. It’s also one of the toughest things to make, but delighted to report, yours truly has learnt how to, though there’s a long way to go to mastering the craft of making of delicious parathas! .

How I make my "curried" veggies! Veggies are roasted until basically done! Meanwhile I Saute fennel seed, cumin seed and Vata spice mix in a bit of ghee or oil, sometimes I add fresh ginger, today I did leeks! Then I add roasted veggies, bring to a boil for a few min, add salt and pepper to taste and serve!
