Back in Bandung from my Semarang workshop 😊 The way I see yoga has changed quite a lot these past few months. Or maybe I just realized it because it must have been gradual. I'm talking about the more physical practice of yoga here. My experience as a teacher who has various kinds of students opens my eyes again and again that yoga is yoga. It's not a contortion, circus act, calisthenic or gymnastic even though the outer form may look very similar.
Compared to those things mentioned above, yogis are (sorry to say this) worse in general in performing difficult tricks. Why? Yoga teaches us not to hurt ourselves and this implies we have to control what we're doing (in a sense that we know what exactly is going on in our body and how to move certain muscle groups so as not to do us harm now or later). .
Our main aim as yoga asana practitioners is to be healthy(-er). Therefore, we should avoid things that give us tension and unecessary discomfort. But this doesn't mean we can only do basic asanas. Just like people who practice meditation increase their time over the year, asana practitioners benefit from practicing advanced poses. Apart from the physical benefits (tone and strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, etc) they help us to keep learning and be humble.
I've been beating about the bush. Well, actually, I blabbered because I'm very sorry to see people hurting themselves because of yoga. They might become scared of yoga and people who know this will feel the same too. It is ironic. Another thing that's ironic is some people are scared of me because they thing I only teach advanced poses. I assure you, I am strict about safety.
