Latissimus Dorsi Stretch /// Latissimus Dorsi is another big, powerful muscle in the trunk. While pecs are used for pushing, lats are used for pulling. Tight lats can lead to limited thoracic mobility, resulting in decreased overall torque and increased stress at your low back during a swing. Lats are internal rotators like pecs, and they are fascially connected. So tight lats can also contribute to rounded shoulders. Stretch your lats daily to improve your golf game and health.
Find a doorway or a pole so you can grab onto it with your top hand. To stretch your left side, bring your left arm overhead and reach for the pole while your palm is facing you, as shown in the picture. Lats adduct, extend, and internally rotate your shoulders. So having your palm facing you will cause the shoulder to externally rotate, therefore maximizing the stretch. You may already feel the stretch by now, but if you want a little extra, gently push yourself away from the pole/doorway with the other arm as shown in the picture. Hold for 2 sets of 30sec to 1 min, repeat on the other side. If you feel pain on the top of the shoulder, step backwards a little to bring your arm more in front of you. This will decrease the flexion angle of the shoulder and help you avoid subacromial impingement symptoms.

HOW TO MODIFY SQUATS AND DEADLIFTS IF YOU HAVE PAIN!

What’s up, Achievers?! @jasonlpak here with @tony.comella - a super smart PT who we’ve come to know on the ‘Gram. Anyway, Tony had posted this awesome graph on squats and deadlifts (swipe to see the graph) and how you can train around pain within those patterns.

For example, if you’re experiencing knee pain while squatting - you don’t necessarily have to stop squatting, you could just shift your weight back to be in a more hip dominant posture and stance. That would immediately take a lot of the stress off of your knees while still training your squat pattern. The above images are all fantastic variations of a squat, and no one variation is better than the other - it’s only about finding the right variation for YOU!

On the flip side, a more hip dominant deadlift position like a Romanian Deadlift might bother your back a bit. If that’s the case, just travel a little bit further up the continuum and try out how a Conventional Deadlift, Trap Bar Deadlift, or Sumo Deadlift feels. These variations, in order, have a more upright position which would help distribute some of that stress to your legs and off of the lower back.

Now obviously everyone looks different with these exercises based on their levers and style, but the key takeaway remains the same. If something happens to bother you - don’t sweat it and also don’t feel like you have to train through it! Experiment and find an alternative that works for you. If none of these variations work, then you could test out single leg variations (lunging, split squatting, single leg deadlifting, etc.) that would reduce the load but still give you a ton of stimulus to adapt. It would also be wise to get checked out by a skilled PT and get some coaching from a fitness coach to optimize the process.

✅A good practitioner will modify your movement rather than just take it out. Far too often in the medical world the deadlift is demonized with practitioners telling their patients to avoid deadlifts at all costs. But research studies on those with low back pain have suggested something quite different! In fact, deadlifts should be more common in the treatment of low back pain!
.
Asa 2015 took patients with greater than 3 months of mechanical low back pain and split them into two groups. One group did 8 weeks of deadlift training, the other group did low load motor control exercises designed to specifically target the impairments of the individuals. After the intervention, both groups had significant decreases in pain intensity, and increases in strength & muscle endurance measurements.

The same group further broke the deadlift group down in a follow up paper to determine which patients in the deadlift group responded best to that intervention. This paper provides insights into who we should prescribe deadlifts to. According to their analysis, patients with lower intensity of pain (<60mm on the pain VAS) and with better lumbar spine endurance (>60 seconds on the Biering-Sorensen Test) had greater improvements with a deadlift based rehab program than those not meeting those criteria.

For those unfamiliar with the Biering-Sorensen Test, a modified version can easily be performed in most gyms using a glute ham developer. Position the GHD so that the pad is on the ASIS (anterior superior iliac spine) with the feet locked into the holder. The athlete then holds their body out with the trunk in neutral alignment for as long as possible. The test is terminated when the subject becomes excessively fatigues or when neutral trunk alignment is no longer maintained. Previous research has shown this test to be reliable in identifying individuals with low back pain.

Have you ever experienced a pinching sensation in the lower back when doing glute bridges? Well, you're not alone. It's actually really common.⠀
.⠀
🍑Glute bridges are a great exercise to start building some hip extension strength, serve as a good entry point into the movement pattern before moving into something like a hip thrust, and can be a great exercise to include in low back rehab. But as always, proper form and technique are critical.⠀
.⠀
The key to it is all in how you start the movement. Rather than laying down and shooting your hips up into the air (and consequently overextending the back), I want you to be a bit more 🤔methodical about it, at least at first until you get the sequence down. Here are the steps...⠀

🔹️Posteriorly tilt your pelvis (roll it back)⠀
🔹️Pretense the glute (give em a squeeze)⠀
🔹️Lift with the hip and stop when they stop⠀
🔹️Finish in a straight line from shoulder to knee⠀

Often times, these chronic low back aches are products of just overstressing the back repetitively through suboptimal technique. And it's the little fixes that can make all the difference in decreasing that sensitivity. Try it out and fix that bridge.👌

🍉Why You Need to Strengthen Your Hip Flexors (And the 4 Best Exercises)

👚Why do the hip flexors matter? Not only because most people don’t focus on strengthening their flexors, but also because every day we do things that both weaken and shorten (or tighten) them.
.
🎒And then if you go to the gym for a workout after sitting at the desk all day and you don’t stretch out and strengthen your hip flexors, you can compound that bad posture, creating muscle imbalances.
.
🎒How does this happen? Because you’re essentially training muscles while they’re in the incorrect position and reinforcing that position every time you move.
.
⛑️By not doing exercises that strengthen the stabilizer muscles in the hip flexors that keep the pelvis in line, you set yourself up for improper positioning of the hips. .
⛑️This can then lead to hip and knee injuries by promoting incorrect foot placement while running.
That’s because the deep muscles of the hip (including the piriformis and quadratus femoris) play a critical role in hip stabilization.

I am completely and utterly exhausted!
-I got 7 hours of sleep each night for the past 3 days! My coaching schedule switched to mornings, so I gotta be up by 6:30. Not fun with my chronic fatigue syndrome :(((
-PAIN I was theorizing I had a kidney stone because I keep getting this random stabbing pain in my back. It’s where my worst pain usually is (my right flank) but it’s a lot worse than usual. I took my highest dose of pain meds so now I’m just praying that my exhausted state and my tens unit will lullaby me to sleep soon😴

How I am surviving being pregnant, in the summer, in Alabama, while chasing a 2 year old and a one year old, raising chickens and a garden, and working:

Back/joint pain (always hits me in the first trimester! Thanks hormones!): Collagen supplement in my coffee or tea daily, microwavable rice bag, #drteals Epsom salt soak, and tart cherry juice (the light version has stevia!!!). Swelling: one of each, peppermint, and dandelion root, in a quart of water. I pour it over ice and drink through the day! I also snack on a cucumber daily.

I have added red raspberry for birth prep as I am nearing my 3rd trimester. In the final weeks I will increase the dose quite a bit--it works too! I only pushed 30 minutes with Ellie and barely FIVE with Samuel (he was basically 10lbs too). Post partum bleeding was barely an issue as well.

So far at nearly 26 weeks I am still able to carry my face painting kit easily (although I have condensed it slightly), and am able to paint for 3 hours without needing a break. Also have had zero swelling in my feet and ankles most days which is not normal for me at all!!! I don't sell any of this stuff, just wanted to pass along what is working for me! This is my second time being big pregnant ALL SUMMER and I am surprised at how smoothly it is going when I stick to using the things listed above!
