Our leadership icon for today is Lee Kuan Yew. Lee was the first and longest-serving Prime Minister of Singapore. It was his leadership that transformed Singapore from a third world country into a thriving metropolitan city in just three decades.

He studied in the top schools in Singapore and went to the London School of Economics briefly for his university education before moving to Cambridge where he obtained his Law degree. He returned to Singapore, where he became a legal advisor to student and trade unions. Here he made many connections that would aid him in his planned political career.

Singapore is one of the world’s success stories, and Lee is the man behind it. Although many critics question his style of leadership and describe it as autocratic and dictatorial, Singapore’s meteoric rise as a city-state is undeniable and it is all because of his leadership.

Next week we shall talk some more about the key leadership qualities that made him stand out and succeed.

I mentioned yesterday that we would be having a Robin Sharma week and our conversations would revolve around the thinking in his book - The Leader who had no Title. There are basically four concepts in his book and I shall briefly take you through them.

1. You do not need a title to be a leader:
Success (business and personal) is something that’s consciously created. To lead without a title “you will have to be unrealistically persistent and wildly courageous.” 2. Turbulent times build great leaders:
Challenging times in both business and life give us great opportunities to learn and transform ourselves. “Problems and difficult days are actually good for you.” 3. The deeper your relationships, the stronger your leadership: “Leave every single person who intersects your path better, happier, and more engaged than you found them.” Time spent forming deep relationships–in all aspects of life–will pay dividends down the road.

4. To be a great leader, first become a great person:
Training and strengthening your inner leader will help you perform at extraordinary levels. The key is learning to lead yourself. In our world we define success by the things we have, not by the people we’ve become. The more self-awareness we develop the more likely we are to grow and help others.

We missed a couple of posts in the past week, our sincere apologies for that.
Today is another Inspirational Monday and our focus is on a book by Robin Sharma titled " The Leader who had no Title". I had informed you all that I was reading this book and would share excerpt as I went along; in addition to this, I am providing a quick summary of the book so that we can all understand the broad theme.

The book is written in a business fable style. The story is good and engaging. The foundation principle of the book is self-leadership. The book advances that anyone can lead regardless of their official title in an organization or community. According to Sharma, “leaders are those individuals who do the things that others aren’t willing to do–even though they might not like doing them either.” In the story, the main character (Blake) has conversations with four unorthodox leaders. Each of these individuals works in a position that — based on conventional wisdom — would not be considered a leadership position. Each conversation brings out key principles that can help “ordinary” people become true leaders:

Read this book, you will love it.

Our Icon Chief Emeka Anyaoku gained prominence when he was seconded from the Nigerian Foreign Service to the Commonwealth Secretariat at the request of the first Secretary-General, Arnold Smith of Canada. Little did anyone realize that he was being made to take his first steps towards becoming one of the most important, most respected diplomat in the world.
Chief Emeka Anyaoku brought to his new assignment his well-known brilliance, his penchant for hard work, his determination to succeed, his dexterity, his polished persuasive skills, and his unwavering commitment to democracy and justice; because of this he became fully recognized and respected throughout the commonwealth.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku, as Deputy Secretary-General, played a key role in preparing many declarations, some of which are the Lusaka Declaration of the Commonwealth on Racism and Racial Prejudice, the Okanagan Statement and Programme of Action on Southern Africa, this, which was later known as the Nassan Accord and played a pivotal role in the pressure to end apartheid.

Chief Emeka Anyaoku became the third Secretary-General of the Commonwealth – the first Nigerian, the first African, and the first black man to occupy the most senior position on the international stage with direct personal access to over fifty Heads of State and Government, and Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth 11.

Our Icon for today is Christiane Amanpour a renowned reporter. She went to work with CNN as an assistant for the international news desk and received her big break in 1989 when she was promoted to a post in Frankfurt. She arrived there at an opportune time when the pro-democracy movement was sweeping through eastern Europe, and Amanpour quickly became CNN’s on-the-spot reporter.

She has reported from the frontlines of virtually every war and global crisis since then and the world has come to know Christiane Amanpour as one of the most trailblazing journalists of our time. She reported from the Persian Gulf War in 1990 to the nearly four-year Siege of Sarajevo, the longest of a capital city in modern history. She was both lauded and criticized for revealing, in the utmost detail, the savage nature of conflict, and working her personal reflections into her reporting.

From that point on, she became a polarizing harbinger of change beyond just her field, causing governments worldwide to take note, act on and be wary of her every move.

She is a courageous leader worthy of note.

Leaders expect trust but don't realize that to gain trust they must give something in return and that singular thing is character.

A leader who lacks character will fall for anything. They will be inconsistent and will condone everything and anything. They will lack even the most fundamental element required to gain trust... integrity.

Each person to his belief.

History describes him as the greatest leader that ever lived. Christians look up to him as their singular role model and strive to emulate his leadership style.

He was an exceptional leader with a great succession plan. He grew over 12 people who continued with his vision. He was a teacher and a coach, constantly showing his followers the way and sharing the vision clearly with them.

He was simple, he had no wealth or affluence but he had influence and so he used it maximally. He led by example and would not ask his people to do what he would not do.
He is a leader worth emulating...lead like Jesus.

Leadership is always contextual, the style deployed for C-Suite Executives should typically not be the same style used for a set of high school teachers or students; even though the concepts are the same. Contextual leadership has been studied and researched for years; most people know it as situational leadership, even though it is somewhat broader than situational leadership.

To understand the complex description of context and situation just imagine context to be your audience and situation to be the different scenarios that can occur whilst leading a defined audience or followers. A leader has to master the context within which they are expected to operate and then gravitate to a better understanding of the situations within that context (I hope I have not bamboozled you more). Let’s say as a leader you are expected to function or lead a group of intellectual bourgeois, this is a context completely different from leading a high school football team. If you are the same leader expected to function across these two settings you would have to adopt a major shift to be effective; this major shift is a contextual one but within this context so many situations will arise that will require you to undergo several shifts as you lead any of the teams.

Leaders in this circumstance must remember that rules do not apply across contexts; leadership maxims that are bandied around are never to be taken as absolutes irrespective of who is advocating them, they are only a guide for how a leader should behave in different situations and if a leader is experienced enough, they will realize that no two cases are the same, no matter how similar they look.

What a leader therefore needs to have is not just a set of rules but the discerning ability to analyze each context and each situation within that context to determine what set of solutions to deploy.

When you encounter true leadership it is like walking through a field of fresh, sweet smelling flowers.

When you become a leader, you become, you embody and you bring with you that sweet smelling aura welcomed by all. Everyone knows a good or great leader. Same way everyone knows a bad or poor leader

Be a great leader, bring that aura with you.

Oue Icon for today is Gamaniel Onosode, popularly known as "Mr. Integrity". He was born and raised in a suburban city in the current Delta State.

Throughout his career, Onosode chaired several private and public sector businesses and initiatives. He was the Chairman of Dunlop Nigeria Plc. A former chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc, he was Presidential Adviser on Budget Affairs and Director of Budget. He was a Fellow of the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank, the Nigerian Institute of Management, of which he was President. He was also a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, having been elected to membership of its Board of Fellows. In addition, Onosode was the inaugural President of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers, Chairman of Council of the Association of Pension Funds of Nigeria.
A laudable track record for a man known to have an impeccable character, a man who boasted of it and hoped to encourage others by his exhibition of character. A man known to speak his mind and a man known to value family and yet lent himself to the service of the less privileged and the society at large. He is a man worth emulating.

Tuesday is an opportunity for a Monday do-over. I am reading Robin Sharma's LWT, "Leaders without Title" again. I lost my prior copy in a borrowing trail that I lost track of.
As I journey through the book I will be sharing as many bits with you as I can. Today, he speaks on growing leaders in every role and stresses that it is the best way for discerning companies to compete. He believes that when everyone is leading at their various points, an excellent organizations is formed.

For our Inspiring Monday series, we are sharing with you a book titled 'Leadership and Self Deception" by the Arbinger Institute. This book is a leadership fable which discusses two concepts – “In the Box” and “Out of the Box”. It describes a person is “in the box”, this person sees others in a distorted way and as a source of their problem. The person “in the box” sees themselves as the centre of the world and others as mere objects whose needs are less legitimate than their own. They blame others and find fault with whatever others do or say. For the person “in the box”, only after they are satisfied, do they look at the needs of others.
A leader “in the box” would face issues such as lack of commitment, lack of trust, poor engagement, poor team work, backbiting and poor communication.

A person “out of the box” sees others as People who have feelings, hopes, fears and needs. A person who is ‘out of the box’ place their needs and the needs of others on the same level. They are good communicators and they try to motivate the people around them. They can deliver even the hardest messages without any ill feeling (Leadership Candor). A leader who is “out of the box” creates an environment of openness, trust and teamwork, where people work hard, put in effort for the collective good of the group not for individual accomplishments.

Growing up I was surrounded by people who would never hold back the truth from you; the emotional impact of the truth they were sharing and the political correctness of the issues being discussed was never paramount; the only objective was to get the truth on the table and be done with it.

I remember even back then, my mom who was as blunt as the come saying to me ‘a person’s sense of self-respect is a very fragile thing and must be protected keenly. When you get an opportunity to share a truth remember not to do it bluntly and without sensitivity because if you do, you lose your respect; but even worse you take away someone’s self-respect.

Candor is the act of being honest and speaking openly. In defining candor, I would take a leaf from my mom and say that “candor is the ability to speak about the good, the bad and the ugly, while leaving dignity in place.” One expectation of leaders is to grow people, to do this a leader would need to coach, provide feedback and encourage. In carrying out all these activities, some truth-telling is required, however, the way a leader chooses to handle the truth telling process says a lot about the leader.

The quality of the truth-telling conversations of a leader with his followers is everything; such conversations must be deep, honest and laced with the best interest of the follower. A great leader strives to confront the issues, address problems without getting emotional or letting personalities impede the process. A leader must be strong enough to let people know where they stand, and never take their dignity away in the process.

All we are about is leadership, nothing more, nothing less. Let us all strive to put the factors that are holding us back from becoming who and what we can be behind us. Let us embrace the opportunity to be better, the opportunity to be the best we can become.

Have a wonderful Thursday and in the spirit of "throwback", remember any time a leader lifted you up, or protected you from even yourself. When you do, just say a quiet thank you, the universe will hear you.

Bishop Desmond Tutu our icon for the day was educated at Johannesburg Bantu High School. After leaving school he trained first as a teacher at Pretoria Bantu Normal College and in 1954 he graduated from the University of South Africa. After three years as a high school teacher he began to study theology, being ordained as a priest in 1960.

Desmond Tutu was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for his opposition to the brutal apartheid regime. Tutu was saluted by the Nobel Committee for his clear views and his fearless stance, characteristics which had made him a unifying symbol for all African freedom fighters.

The Peace Prize award made a big difference to Tutu's international standing, and was a helpful contribution to the struggle against apartheid. The broad media coverage made him a living symbol in the struggle for liberation, someone who articulated the suffering and expectations of the oppressed masses.

Have a great and iconic Wednesday.

Good morning leaders and aspiring leaders. Today is Inspiring Monday and for our post today, I want to take us all down memory lane to some of the issues we have previously tackled; as well as say thank you for staying with us so far.

We started this journey because we saw and experienced a gap in leadership and through our platform we desired to breach this gap as well as help aspiring leaders get it right. Preach leadership is all about enlightenment, it all about building people who wish to have a sound leadership capability.

As you are reminded of some of the areas we have collectively journied through, take a moment to reminisce and reach out to tell us what impacted you the most.

Have a great week and an even greater day!!! #leadinglines #leadingbyexample

Simon Sinek is by far one of my favorite leadership advocates and that is why I have shared a lot of his videos with you. Today, instead of a video, I will be sharing his book "Start With Why". The book starts with a comparison of the two main ways to influence human behaviour: manipulation and inspiration. Sinek argues that inspiration is the more powerful and sustainable of the two.

Sinek posits that people are inspired by a sense of purpose (or "Why"), and that this should come first when communicating, before "How" and "What". He calls this triad the golden circle.
If you can lay your hands on this book, read it. It is full of meaning information and tips that any leader or aspiring leader can use to lead successfully. If and when you read it, remember to share any insights garnered with us.

Have a great Monday and an amazing week.

Leadership in its truest form is a lifelong journey of purposeful commitments that leaders make to themselves and their followership; simply put, purposeful leadership is the extent to which a leader has a strong moral self and is vision led.

Leaders who commit to leading purposefully impact their teams, organizations and communities in astounding ways, and leave a lasting legacy. There is a school of thought that believes that purposefulness is something that can be taught or coached; I am not of this school of thought even though I believe that there is nothing impossible to learn, unlearn or relearn, if we set our minds to it. However, as we set about getting leaders to learn or unlearn traits, we must remember that anything learned is never natural and a schooled leader will always act the role, but never be it.
The foundation of purpose is self-discipline and this discipline allows a leader know their limitations and yet enables them focus and drive their vision despite these limitations. A purposeful leader understands what needs to be done, is realistic about challenges and is still committed to achieving set goals.

You know a purposeful leader when you see leaders who are passionate and unrelentingly driving their team towards an agreed destination. A destination that they (both leader and followership) see clearly because the leader has distilled their vision to the least of their followership. You know a purposeful leader when you see a leader who at the foundation of their being is a moral consciousness that is built overtime and which the leader is striving to inculcated into the followership through a values embedding process and through socialization.

Our theme for this entire week still remains our nation's independence. To drive this home we have selected our earliest, elder statesmen as our icons for today.

These statesmen put all their passion and energies into the fight for our independence and their efforts paid off, we were granted the opportunity to self-rule, self - determine and self-actualise. As leaders come, they were sound and purposeful. Their vision was clear, their goal properly defined. Their commitment was total and it's no surprise that they succeeded.

As excellent as they were, they failed in one key area; they failed to grow successors and build the structures that will safeguard all they fought for and built. Today, as we remember their efforts and recognize their sacrifice in winning us this once great nation, we implore all leaders and aspiring leaders to take a note from them and always strive to grow people who will keep their dreams and vision alive.

Today marks our nation's independence day, our 58th anniversary. As Nigerians celebrate and ponder on this day across our nation and throughout the globe, @preach leadership, we believe that this is a good time as any to address the leadership issue of our once great nation.

Nigerians are a highly optimistic people, believing that the poor state of the nation would get better, even when they have no clue how. I have tried over the past few days to imagine where our earliest Statesman who worked tirelessly to secure our independence had imagined the country would be now, something tells me their wildest imagination would never reveal our current situation.

Our nation has suffered under the bane of poor leadership. Infact our case has confirmed the fact that without good leadership no matter what resources are available, nothing can be achieved. As we celebrate our independence in our usual very optimistic way, I charge all of us to be the kind of leader we would like to see across our nation.

Happy Independence Day Nigerians and all lovers of Nigeria.

A Nation's Independence marks the beginning of it's self - actualisation and a journey towards it's greatness.

We attained Independence in 1960; we were handed the responsibility of self determination, we were given the opportunity to write our own success story. How have we fared?

Can we say today that we have capitalized and ensured that the labour of our heroes past has not been in vain? Can our Leadership honestly say they love this country with the passion it will take to make it great? These are valid questions.

As you go about your Sunday activities, remember to pray for Nigeria as she prepares to mark her independence tommorow. May our future not be as bleak as it looks.

Condoleezza Rice became one of the most influential women in the world of global politics when she served in President George W. Bush cabinet as his national security adviser in December of 2000. Rice played a crucial part in shaping the most aggressive U.S. foreign policy in modern history.

Before her appointment, Rice was a promising new talent in her field, after she earned a doctorate in 1981, she was offered a fellowship at Stanford University. No other woman had ever been offered a fellowship to its Center for International Security and Arms Control. In 1993 she became the university's first-ever female provost, which essentially made her second-in-command at the school. She was also the first African American to be selected for the position.

Condoleezza Rice is the first black woman to serve as the United States' national security adviser, as well as the first black woman to serve as U.S. Secretary of State (2005-09). In August 2012, Rice also became one of the first women to become a member of the Augusta National Golf Club, located in Augusta, Georgia.

This amazing woman who has broken many boundaries is our icon for the day.

I always say that a leader should never allow themselves to be placed on a perfection pedestal as followers are prone to do.

A leader should always and constantly be in a state of learning, knowing that they lead a diverse team and everyone on that team is some sort of egg-head.

Above all, leadership does not confer a status of total knowledge, error-free, total growth persona. All leaders should listen to honest feedback, not ego boosters, but real people who tell them where they have gaps and when they err.

Enjoy your Monday and the week in total.

Our icon for today is Professor Wangari Maathai. She is internationally recognized for her persistent struggle for democracy, human rights and environmental conservation and has addressed the UN on several occasions, speaking on behalf of women at special sessions of the General Assembly for the five-year review of the earth summit.

She served on the commission for Global Governance and Commission on the Future. She and the Green Belt Movement that she founded have received numerous awards, most notably The 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. Others include The Sophie Prize (2004), The Petra Kelly Prize for Environment (2004), The Conservation Scientist Award (2004), to mention a few.

Professor Maathai was also listed on UNEP’s Global 500 Hall of Fame and named one of the 100 heroines of the world. Professor Maathai has also received honorary doctoral degrees from several institutions around the world: William’s College, MA, USA (1990), Hobart & William Smith Colleges (1994), University of Norway (1997) and Yale University (2004). We all remember the saying"don't give me fish, teach me how to fish. This is just reinforcing that line of wisdom and stressing the fact that every real leader's ambition is to create more leaders.

Excellent leaders are desirious of empowering their team and ensuring that there is a steady supply of leaders growing out of the team. Let's all do the same.

Enjoy your Tuesday, and like I always say, Tuesdays are a great opportunity to remake your Monday.
