All three of our beloved Jedi Masters failed (and as Yoda explained to Luke in TLJ: “The greatest teacher, failure is”). Obi-Wan and Yoda went into exile because when they failed to stop Palpatine, there was nothing they could do. Virtually all the Jedi were already killed off. Palpatine had ultimate power, and the Rebublic was defeated. All the years that Obi-Wan and Yoda were in hiding, they couldn’t do anything against the Empire. But when Leia reaches out to Obi-Wan for help, Obi-Wan returns back to the fight, confronts his failure, takes Luke under his wing, and recognizes Luke’s the last hope to defeating the Empire and the Sith. Yoda does the same. He confronts his failure and trains Luke. Yoda realizes that Luke is the key to defeating Vader, the Emperor, and the Empire. With Luke, he retreats into seclusion on Ahch-To where he wallows in self-pity after his failure with Ben at his academy. He realizes that he’s the reason why Ben fell to the Dark Side. He also goes on a journey and learns more about the Force, the origins of the Jedi, and concludes the Jedi were wrong all along. He learns that the Jedi/Sith had been in this never-ending cycle of death for thousands of years, and Luke didn’t want to be a part of it any longer. He then cuts himself off from the Force, and accepts that its time for the Jedi to end. I know many disagree (and that’s OK) but I just wish we didn’t get such a depressed, rude, and suicidal-sounding Luke Skywalker wandering about on the island in the first two acts of TLJ. While it was a cool moment when he Force-projects himself on Crait to help the Resistance flee and rebuild, wish we could have seen our childhood hero return to the fight in person after Rey arrives on the island with his saber (and after he learns of Han’s death and that Leia needs him more than ever). Would have been cool to see him actually united with Leia and strategizing a way to defeat the First Order. This would have been more in line with the Luke from the OT.
