This month is #breastcancerawareness month. I not only want to promote ‘early detection’ #getchecked but I also want to share my #story in hope it will help those who have or will be affected by any type of cancer. Everyone is affected, not just the patient, loved ones are also directly confronted with the illness and everyone deals with the experience in their own way. I now realise how important is it to get the #help and #support you need.
It was this month, two years ago I was diagnosed. Receiving a breast cancer diagnosis was a devastating experience. One minute my biggest issue was making it out of work on time for the weekend, the next was finding out I had a life-threatening illness. I went through a range of emotions, I felt numb at first and it took me a while to accept that I was sick. Then the anxiety, anger, confusion, depression, sadness and fear kicked in. There was also the physical symptoms and the fact that treatment was going to change the way I looked which caused a negative impact on my body image.
The support from my amazing husband and #bestfriend @luwke_ whom I will never be able to thank enough for being my rock and my beautiful #friends and #family was overwhelming.
Having #cancer and recovering from it can have a big psychological and physical impact. The scares will always be there and for a long time I have found it difficult getting back to ‘normal’. I’m not there yet, but I’m closer than I was yesterday. 'You may see me struggle but you'll never see me quit'
