We sit every day, and most of us sit for the majority of our day. It seems like a pretty simple, self-explanatory act, but it can wreak havoc over time.

To clear up any confusion: Circuit training is when you cycle through a bunch of exercises (usually 5 to 10) that target different muscle groups without resting in between. For example, you might move from squats to push-ups to planks to lunges to supermans, and keep repeating until you're totally toasted. (You're probably also wondering what the difference is between circuit training and interval training.) The resulting workout is part strength training and part cardio, which is what makes it one of the most effective training styles out there. -

1. Get maximum results in minimum time.
Unless fitness is your job, nobody has hours a day to spend in the gym. Circuit training is the perfect workout for the time-crunched fitness fiend. You can set up as many or as few stations as you like (get a quick tutorial here) and then continue through the circuit until your time runs out. Do you want to lose weight? If you answered yes, you’re only half right. Technically, what you really want to do is lose fat. -

Anyone can lose weight. All you have to do is stop eating (please don’t do that). The point is that yes, you will lose weight, but the weight you lose will be muscle, fat, bone, water, and every other part of your body.- What does that look like? Here’s what you should be focused on… -
- - •Eat as many calories as possible that still enables you to lose weight. Under eating is a sure way to lose muscle and stall out. Here’s how many calories you should eat. -
- - •At least 80% of those calories should come from whole foods that are nutrient dense. Your body needs more than calories. It needs nutrients to run optimally. -
- - • Don’t try to lose weight too fast. The faster you lose weight the higher the percentage of that weight loss will be muscle. How long it will take to lose weight will be dependent on your starting point. -
- - • Try to keep your protein in the 20-30% of total calories range. This usually comes out to between .6-.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Fat and carb grams will be dependent on food preferences and your ability to remain consistent with your eating. -
- - •Prioritize strength training. Compound exercises like the bench press, squat, deadlift, and rows will most efficiently build muscle. The key though is to make sure you aren’t losing strength during the weight loss process. -
- - •Minimize the amount of cardio you do. Use the least amount as possible that still enables you to hit your performance, enjoyment, and weight loss goals. -

STRENGTHENING, RHOMBOIDS: all day, everyday...this and similar exercises (think rowing moves) is one of my favorites. It always makes my upper back feel better, ALWAYS!!! In the nature of today's car driving and computer/text postures, this can't be done enough.

Tip #1 for Better Posture: Morning Wake-up

Breathe deeply into your belly five times, expanding your chest, ribs, belly and lower back. Stretch your arms and legs in all directions, elongating all the tissues at the neck, shoulders and hips. Squeeze your shoulder blades five times for 3 seconds each.

Trying to move through life with good #posture is not easy especially when we get locked in bad poses. I’m definitely not a model of good posture 100% of my day. Past desk jobs, driving a van for many years and not being good about getting a massage and stretching consistently enough all can get me “stuck”. This is a handy exercise you can do in the bathroom at work, in a hotel, or anywhere that you would rather not lie on the floor.
Begin in a standing position with both feet flat on the floor, with your feet a shoulder-length apart.  Don’t lock your knees, and keep your back straight. Lift one knee up and grasp it with both hands. Make sure you keep the knee parallel to the corresponding hip. Use your hands to pull your knee toward the opposite shoulder until you feel a pull along the side of your buttocks. Hold up to one minute, or as long as you can balance. Repeat the action with the other leg. Try to do it three times for each leg. -

The piriformis muscle: -
- • Starts at the lower spine and connects to the upper surface of each femur (thighbone)
- • Functions to assist in rotating the hip and turning the leg and foot outward
- • Runs diagonally, with the sciatic nerve running vertically directly beneath it (although in some people the nerve can run through the muscle).

The exact causes of piriformis syndrome are unknown. Suspected causes include:
- • Muscle spasm in the piriformis muscle, either because of irritation in the piriformis muscle itself, or irritation of a nearby structure such as the sacroiliac joint or hip
- • Tightening of the muscle, in response to injury or spasm
- • Swelling of the piriformis muscle, due to injury or spasm
- • Bleeding in the area of the piriformis muscle. -

The natural “carrying angle” of the elbow actually lends itself to take the shoulder into external rotation as you curl...but ONLY if you make a concerted effort to make this happen. This strict “no money” curl will do the trick every time. It even builds in a feedback mechanism so you know when you get it right (and when you miss). Keep your back planted and flattened against the wall. Start with the dumbbells in contact with the wall at the bottom. Curl the bells up and out until they once again make contact with the wall at the top! This requires shoulder external rotation (something we just don’t get enough of!). If you do this right, you’ll walk away from the set with biceps burning,shoulders that feel awakened and an almost instant feeling of stronger, better more upright posture! Give it a shot. Good posture is so important! Having poor posture creates long-term difficulty in completing functional everyday activities, simply because balance needs to be restored to the body so it can function more optimally. Poor posture can lead to chronic pain, if not addressed appropriately, and can have quite a severe impact on your well-being long term, especially if it starts creating symptoms such as headaches, joint pain, nerve pain, regular muscular aches, fatigue, stiffness, limited range of motion, lack of flexibility, difficulty participating in regular activities and affecting your sleep pattern. Over time, poor posture becomes a bad habit, but, like any bad habit, it can be broken, with time, effort and consistency.

Do your shoulders round forward? It could be that you have tight Pectoral muscles. Tight Pecs can cause your shoulders to turn in and round forward. This can also impede the movement of your shoulder blades and limit the movement of your ribs needed for taking deep breaths. Hanna Somatic exercises are simple mindfulness based exercises to shorten and contract the tight muscle(s) and then slowly release them to reset the resting state of the muscle. Here is a simple Pec release demonstrated on a the edge of a table, but if you don’t have a surface like this, you can simply do it on the floor using just the rotation and shortening, followed by the slow unraveling of the muscle fibers.

NOTE: It must be done in a quiet environment where you can focus on and visualize the slow lengthening of the muscles without distraction. Do not complete more than 3 reps on each side, per session and start with 1-2 sessions per day.

Many clients often I see have muscle knots/adhesions. These commonly occur in the shoulder muscles of sporty and sedentary people alike. Repetitive motions (such as throwing a ball) can cause muscle fibers to contract and get tight, which feels 'knotty' underneath the skin. Muscles of the shoulder, particularly ones that attach to the neck (such as the trapezius muscles), are also susceptible to becoming tight from too much time hunched forward (like in front of a computer) excessive stress, carrying kids etc
Having a professional massage is most effective way to help. A deep tissue massage is helpful for chronic strains and knots because it reduces muscle spasm and tension, stimulates blood circulation and promotes relaxation.
I may do some trigger point therapy, which involves pressing a thumb or tip of an elbow into the knot to get the muscle fibers to release. It can be uncomfortable but is effective, so trust in my experience and knowledge 😃
