Hi 👋 friends . So this is the first post of a few that are going to be dedicated to helping you improve your posture 👏 .
Remember that there is a big difference between posture and structure:
.
Posture is your ability to hold yourself upright and in a good, STACKED UP position 📐
.
🏛️Structure refers to the underlying shape of the spine, muscles and joints and how they are naturally aligned without any effort .
We often mistake the two! If you have a good structural alignment than of course it will be easier to maintain good posture. If your spine 🧠 is really shifted however ➡️ it is going to take a lot more work and is likely why you find it exhausting !
.
Practicing this and the exercises to come will improve the strength of the muscles 💪 that hold you upright and improve the mobility of the joints of the spine .
✅You might even find with a long time that your structure starts to improve as well and you look more straight and stacked up - it does take time though in the same way it would to straighten a building .
If better posture is your goal than do these daily!

I love barre stretching. 🙋🏻‍♀️ A lot of people skip stretching before workout and that’s such a shame because it can have numerous benefits. It should actually be part of your daily routine, whether you exercise or not. So what are the benefits?

1. Reduced muscle tension. If you’re sore all the time, it’s time to consider stretching for real. 🤔 Also post-exercise recovery and soreness deduction.
2. Increased blood circulation. Important for overall health and recovery.

If you work at a desk, You’ll want to read this! 🙌🏼🍊

Most of us have similar imbalances in our posture, especially if we sit at a desk!
.
We sit in the car the whole way to work. We sit all day at work. We sit at lunch. We sit in the car all the way home. We sit at dinner. We sit on the couch to relax from our day of sitting.
.
All this sitting causes, among other things, the shoulders to rotate forward, hovering over the chest. The muscles in the front of the shoulder want to take over everything we do because they are the front-line!
.
The shoulders are overactive, the back is under active and it leads to whole host of compensation, muscle strain, cramps, headaches, and poor posture.
.
Exercises like the mini band walk out train the typically under active muscles in the outside of the shoulder to help rotate the shoulders back, but it’s so very important you hold the arms at shoulder width, fighting the inward tension of the band! 💪🏻🧡

I noticed that my seating position and posture has improved alot comparing last year this time... My backrest was 3 inches higher and because i’ve lowered it, i use more of my core muscles to keep my balance. I sit more up straight than before. The "Lats," or the Latissimus Dorsi muscle is a huge back muscle that produces a number of essential movements such as pulling the arm down, extending and internally rotating the arm, and even works as a powerful rotator of the trunk. It could also be a strong shoulder stabilizer and maintain good posture of the upper extremity.
.
Unfortunately, this is an under-used muscle for a lot of sedentary people. .
The Lat-Pulldown machine is the most popular exercise for the Lats, but when you don't have any idea how the muscle works (or where it is, if it's there) it's hard to target this great back muscle specifically. There's a lot of ways to compensate on the lat-pulldown by pulling from the arms, rounding the shoulders and pulling from the trunk, and you'll miss out on the benefits of the machine.
.
Try this one as a warm-up if you have any issues with locating your Lats:
🍕 Bend forward so that your arm and trunk is at a 90 degree angle from the cable.
🍕 Keeping your arm straight, bring your hand straight down by the side of your thigh. 🍕 Slowly bring the arm back up without moving the trunk.
.
👉 You can place the other hand on your ribs to feel your lats move. This can also be used as a finisher to get the burn 🔥 on the lats.
.

On January 15 I started a workout program with a bunch of friends. This week, the results are flowing in.

If you've been with me through this process you've heard me talk about my funk to feeling fabulous transformation. You've seen my post about hip alignment and no more back pain since I started this. All those things were really real and I could feel change significantly.

Here's a hidden side effect though, that 💥blew my mind💥I didn't even notice until I saw these two photos side-by-side. My flexibility!!! I never would have guessed this "arms, abs and ass" strength & toning program would result in this. My shoulders can now fully align with my torso (key for good posture), I can perform hip extension without needing to turn out, and I can split further. Plus... I'm digging the booty shaping, but we knew that was going to happen.

Peep my work station from working on a case study on dementia and health care💪
Started working on my teeny tiny notebook and decided to break out big ole bertha!
After grad students from NIU's clinic came to the Pre-PT meeting this past Thursday, I was super aware of my posture and activity during my typing marathon yesterday. I made sure to have better lumbar support, my feet uncrossed and flat on the ground, and my monitor closer to eye level. (Check out the stack of books under my smaller laptop)
These didn't make my posture perfect but it definitely helped! I usually get tension headaches whenever I'm working on homework and after ten hours of working on that case study, I was headache FREE! It was wonderful😍
Also! I made sure to get up and walk around a bit, not only to get the blood flowing and to stretch my muscles, but also to relieve the strain on my eyes from staring at computer screens. I tried to stretch and move around every hour or so (unless I was on a roll bc there's no way I was going to ruin the mojo!) And this helped so much! I was able to focus better when I came back to the paper and also prevented me from having any headaches, back, or neck pain.
I really wish I had learned to be more self-aware of my posture and movement sooner! It would have helped so much over all the years of school. I highly recommend changing your study/essay habits in terms of posture/movement!
Take the time, even if it's only 10 minutes, to research tips on better your posture at a desk!! You're going to thank me for it (if you haven't already become self-aware😉) I'm more than willing to share what I learned from the SPT's and what I found on my own☺️ Feel free to message me if you're interested in getting some tips!

An exercise I like to call “Sink or Swim” is one I keep in my repetoire to strengthen my deep core. I love it because it works extension in my abdominals to combat all the flexion abdominal exercises I overdid as a young athlete...not knowing better. It strengthens your lower back, glutes, and improves your posture. Lay on your stomach, with your legs extended behind you and your arms by your sides. Start by lifting your chest and legs off of the ground. While holding this position swim your arms over your head and back down to your sides, without letting your chest sink even a fourth of an inch. THIS IS KEY!! It is harder than it looks. *If you suffer from low back discomfort, just keep your legs and feet on the ground while performing the exercise.

⚡️Exercise Breakdown⚡️
Band Rows-
These are a super effective shoulder warm-up. It activates the entire upper body posterior chain: delts,lats, rotator cuff, triceps and traps. By doing the exercise in a squat position you activate the core and glutes to make it a full body warm up. Keep the elbows at about shoulder level as they come back but keep those shoulders out of the ears. As your hands come out be mindful to keep tension on the band to keep the triceps and delts engaged.
