On May 25, 2018 at Noblesville West Middle School in Indiana, a seventh grade boy asked to be excused from his science class and returned a short time later with two handguns. He immediately began to open fire, screaming students sought cover behind a table, Science teacher Jason Seaman ran directly toward the shooter. One round struck a 13 year old girl. As Jason ran toward the gunman he through a basketball at his face to distract him. Jason was shot three time’s before he could reach and tackle the shooter.
The struggle was on, but Jason, once a defensive end for the Southern Illinois University football team, was able to get the handgun from the shooter. Despite being shot in the abdomen, hip and forearm, Jason was able to immediately subdue the shooter. His actions saved countless lives and the shooter was arrested “extremely quickly” after the incident around 9 a.m.
Approximately 20-minuters after the incident and on the way to the hospital Jason was able to speak to his wife by telephone, telling her that he loved her and that he was ok. Jason and his wife have two young children together, a toddler son and a one-month-old daughter.
Noblesville, Indiana is about 20 miles northeast of Indianapolis and is home to about 50,000 people.
Noblesville West Middle School has about 1,300 students from grades six through eight.
Seventh-grader Ethan Stonebraker said that the student shooter was acting suspiciously when he walked into the room while the class was taking a test. He said that the teacher, likely averted a catastrophe. “Our science teacher immediately ran at him, swatted the gun out of his hand and tackled him to the ground. If it weren’t for him, more of us would have been injured for sure.” Jason was later quoted as saying, “First of all, thank you to the first responders from Noblesville and Fishers for their immediate action and care. I want to let everyone know that I was injured but am doing great. To all students, you are all wonderful and I thank you for your support.
