Tēnā koe kiwi! ☺️🧡
Meet our second Operation Nest Egg (ONE) chick to hatch at the Zoo this 2018/19 kiwi season.
Excitingly, this is the 360th chick to have hatched at Auckland Zoo as part of the ONE programme, but this wee kiwi didn’t have the easiest start to life. It was positioned awkwardly in its shell and when it came time to hatch, it was not able to use its powerful legs to break through the hard outer layer. Thankfully our vet team and bird keepers were on hand, performing a little ‘egg surgery’ to help it successfully hatch.
Many thanks to our Wild Work partners Thames Coast Kiwi Care and @KiwisforKiwi, who we work with to help kiwi at Auckland Zoo, on predator free islands and in the wild. As our bird keeper Nat says “It's great to be involved in the direct conservation of our national icon!”
Did you know!? When you visit us, your ticket directly funds our Wild Work! Ka pai for helping out our fellow kiwis!
